Thanks for these videos. My great uncle Harry Cowling was an exhibition pilot for Curtiss ca1910, flying at Coney Island, down the Ohio River, all over. Some of his photos and papers are at the EAA museum in Wisconsin. What an adventure it must have been to have experienced that time in aviation!

Wow... I got chills watching this; can't imagine how cool it must be to experience the real thing - and then on top of that, imagine what it must have been like to experience this over 100 years ago?! I always figured that planes from this era must have been terrifying to fly and I'm amazed by how smooth, stable and (apparently) easy to control this one is. Thanks for making these incredible videos and sharing them with us!!

I guess it had to be pretty easy to fly, because the only way you'd get to learn it, would be to survive the first time ;)

All I can say is thank you lord for giving us Glenn Curtiss. I shudder to think if the Wrights' had prevailed with their copyright suits, even though they almost did, and we were all forced to develope aircraft with wing warping to control roll.

Got to this through Long Island’s Cradle of Aviation museum. This demo adds a lot of information. On paper this is a slow airplane. In reality, you don’t want to traveling along in this bamboo-and-rice paper clattery thing any faster. Not a model of stability - superbly smooth flying.

Some amazing examples of historic flight, bet that aircraft is a ton of fun with any crosswind .
@mikehaas7
@mikehaas7 5 лет назад
The video of his very first flight after acquiring this Curtiss Pusher was only about a minute long and he mentioned that he wasn't taking a chance with the crosswinds that were blowing that day and he set it down almost immediately. He noted that with the Curtiss the pilot has to be "on" all the time. The craft has no dihedral and no trim adjustment. Even in good conditions your arms would have to feel about 100 lbs a piece after flying this thing. What a wonderful aircraft and very stable as compared to the French Antionettes and Bleriots. However, the French Farman 3 was a similar craft and just as stable, dating also from around 1908/09.

@Kneedragon1962
@Kneedragon1962 8 лет назад
+Craig Kirkpatrick "Admired the airspeed and turn-and-bank indicators  :-)" I didn't see those... Apparently, they used to tie a shoelace to a flying wire or strut some place in comfortable field of view, and it used to provide info about airspeed, angle of attack, slip and turn & bank... and also whether you were a good boy scout... [edit] In fact, I hear some people who fly ultalights today, do exactly the same thing...

Oh wait if memory serves me right the U.S. Military at the time came to them and since it was to hard for them to fly ate you made ones that could be flown in a sitting position I think it's been a while since I've done a research paper on them so I might not be right
