Curtiss TP 40N - First Flight in 4 1/2 Years

I recently got a chance to try a test flight in our TP-40N!
If you'll remember, the last time I flew it, FOUR AND A HALF YEARS AGO, the landing gear didn't want to come up so I immediately put it down and landed safely. I had already bellied in my other P-40E due to a problem and didn't want a repeat episode. I decided not to fly this one again until we re-installed an original emergency system, which for some reason in the past was taken out! This involved having special components made, pulling the fuel tanks out to install them, and then doing lots of gear swings. Finally we were able to get her out and take her for the test flight. She ran great! Check it out.

I know that this was the early fighter planes n WWII and most people always seem to like the P-51 or the P-38 or Corsair but the P-40 has always been my favorite fighter of the era. My father was a nose gunner in a PB4Y logging over 113 missions in the south pacific so I have always really loved the aircraft from this era but there is just something about the P-40, It's a sexy son of a gun!

Does anyone else get a nostalgic moment watching her fly, I keep thinking of people like Bob Scott and thats exactly what it would have been like when he buzzed the field in WW II. Thank God for people like Kermit who keep these birds flying and the memory of our vets from WW II alive.

@Kermie - What a sweet ride, the roar of that Allison engine is pure joy! As far as the vibration, check the cooling fan blades, sometimes they'll shear from their retainers, which can damage the propeller.

I just don't understand how there aren't constant car wrecks on that stretch of highway that runs by Kermit's airfield when he's playing with his toys. Once, driving by a small local airport, and AT-6 flew low over my car and I was so surprised and amazed that I almost drifted into the oncoming lane.

P-51's really get the limelight these days but the P-40 is one of my favorites,especially when compared to the later model bubble P-51's.It's been shown that a lot of the less then great reviews and info on them from back then was unjustified.

More rugged , better role rate , better in a dive , and with an Allison V1710 that could take one hell of a beating , the P-40 was an extremely lethal airplane in the hands of a pilot who knew how to exploit her strong points . Where in South Jersey ? Lived summers at my Uncles farm north of Freehold on Route 79 below Matawan . Remember the airfield off Rt. 79 ? Used to ride my bike there and take lessons over the summer . For rides they had an old Curtiss , a Stearman and a Cub . Farm and airfield are all gone now . Yep , love the P-40 too .

@chaosbreaker657
@chaosbreaker657 4 года назад
I think the P 40 never faced off against the Zeroes. However, it faced off against the Oscar, a fighter that's almost similar to the Zero. The P 40's strengths was that it was sturdy, heavier firepower, faster both in level flight and diving. The Oscars are more agile in horizontal maneuvers, however.

Smoooooth runner! Had it had a better supercharger the Merlin might not have become the icon it has become.
@machia-mw1lm
@machia-mw1lm 7 лет назад
Without a doubt . The auxiliary stage turbosupercharger limited the Allison , and in the case of the P-39's and P-40's its total omission doomed those airplanes into mediocrity . Although the P-40 in the hands of the right pilot was a lethal airplane , it's superior maneuverability over a P-51 coupled with a higher critical altitude and cruising speed made capable with a turbosupercharger would have made the P-40 one of aviation's elite aircraft . A P-51 has a slower roll rate than the P-40 . Snap rolls in a P-51 are relatively docile , while in a P-40 you better make sure you don't slam your head on the canopy ! The Allison V1710 was a better engine in many areas . A much tougher engine for one thing . The Merlin was more of a thoroughbred . The Allison fought in every theatre of the war , from sub-zero temperatures , to the tropics , the Allison brought many pilots home safely despite being shot-up in all kinds of weather conditions . I highly recommend to you a book called "Vee's for Victory". While highly technical , it's also a story about the development and refinement of the Allison V1710 . Quite an engine , and more are in operation today in warbirds than the Merlin . That says something for their design and overall build quality . And while the Merlin was and is a fabulous piece of engineering , the Allison is often referred to as an inferior design which is totally false .
