Son of Fëanor and father of Celebrimbor, Curufin's life would be one marked by bringing great evil upon others, and himself. The Oath would drive him to great evil - and his own doom. It would even cause a parting of the ways between Curufin and Celebrimbor.

Watching the video today. I am reminded of the following - Curufin: *participates in the Kinslayings of innocents and tries to kill Beren* Also Curufin: *Comes across Eol the a-hole* " oh look at that. We have laws preventing me from killing other elves and such!"

Curufin and Celegorm always gave me the impression that they were the most malicious of Feanor's sons, and they have to their names more wicked deeds than positive ones. Being the first ones to die seems like a fitting punishment, and I wouldn't be surprised if they have to spend an eternity at the Halls of Mandos alongside their father until their final chance to redeem themselves.

@@blenderbananaeven if he committed no kin slaying or condemning the remaining host to either go back or walk the helcaraxa, I would only agree if feanor went for his revenge alone/with immediate family. As much I love feanor and his mighty deed (especially fighting multiple balrogs) he forgot he's king first and ultimately doomed his people for a terrible fate in his pride and blind hatred.

@@alzanari1274 I dont see it like that In Feanor's mind he helped his people by leading them out of Valenor. He understood that only only decadence awaited the Noldor in Tirion and Valenor. Not to mention the fails the Valar did to the elves by allowing Morgoth to kill their king and steal the Silmarils. He, and a lot of elves from a lot of clans also perceived that, life far away from valenor and the Valar was better back when the elves lived in the shores of Cuiviénen. And i do belive Feanor had a point on that.

Probably my favorite question in Tolkien's work. Was Feanor good or evil?. On one hand, yes he did commit horrible atrocious to the Teleri elves, on the other hand, from his point of view, the Valar were doing nothing about Melkor causing trouble on Valinor, they asked Feanor to hand over his prize possessions because they had failed to defend the trees. It seems like he was the only person that actually wanted to do anything to fight Morgoth, even if it did come from a bad place. Feanor makes a perfect "anti-hero" as he did do some good things, even though they came from a bad place in his heart. (Just my 2 cents, I can see people feel very strongly about Feanor and I'm just trying to shine light on both sides of the argument)

Tolkien provided Old English names for some of his characters. For Curufin, the name Cyrefinn Facensearo was given, from the Old English words cyre ("choice"), facen ("deceit, guile, wickedness"), saeru ("skill"), and Facensearo ("treachery").

Another great video Matt, its interesting to see how alike and also how different all the sons of Feanor were, like Curufin, Celegorm and Caranthir really follow after Feanor in all ways while Maglor and Maedhros were more a little more sympathetic when Maedhros goes back to look for Dior’s sons and then Maglor going back for Elros and Elrond after the 3rd Kinslaying. I love the fact that Celebrimbor see’s the mistakes of his father and distances himself from him instead of following in his footsteps.

When I initally read about the Silmarils, each time the oath was raised, tragedy and bitterness followed. Ultimately the oath only benefited Morgoth, even when he lost a Silmaril to Beren.

The Oath ultimately brought down Morgoth, bcs it's likely that the Valars and the calaquendi would remained stuck in Valinor until almost no elf or uncorrupted man remained in Beleriand. Even the 2,3 Kinslaying helped because pushed Earendil and Elwing out of their confort zone so to say :))) #Feanordidnothingwrond ✨ xDDD

@@MrTrakiiskiI'm not convinced of this, to me, one of if not the main reason the valar did not wage war against morgoth was the oath and the noldors, as that would be partially condoning their flight and the actions that followed, the valar closed their lands and acted only after pardon was given.

Without actually looking it up, I'm guessing that Tolkien intended the 'dh' in names like Maedhros to be pronounced like the 'th' in 'this', not like the 'th' in 'thirsty'. The spelling 'dh' is sometimes used in transliteration to denote the voiced dental fricative to separate it from the unvoiced one. I'm just assuming that this is the reason that Tolkien used both and in his spelling of names: different sounds.

That's probably right. As for me, I'm even more bothered about the way he pronounces some vowels and diphtongs, especially "ae", as is "Maeethros". Vowels should always be clear. Nargothrond is another example, where he turns the first "o" into an /ʌ/. It's not a crime, but an elf would rapidly detect his English accent.

Nice video, I really enjoyed it. Looking forward to the next video on Sons of Fëanor! Btw. I don't think that Celebrimbor is proud and ambitious. He was swayed by Sauron just because of his desire of knowledge, which is nothing bad (it's actually pretty common Noldor trait). If he would be proud like his father or grandfather, he would never seek council of Gil-Galad and Galadriel, nor giving them three most powerful rings.

Great video about a character I have despised since I first started reading Silmarillion in the 80s. I found it satisfying to read about his death in the sack of Doriath. I adored Maglor, and for Maedhros, I felt pity.

My personal favorite is the short speech faramir has when he says "War must be, while we defend our lives against a destroyer who would devour all; but I do not love the bright sword for its sharpness, nor the arrow for its swiftness, nor the warrior for his glory. I love only that which they defend" Maybe that's too short of a speech? But I love it. Good luck with your paper!

0:36 says that Curufin is the 6th son of Feanor.... isn't he the 5th? Maedhros, Maglor, Celegorm, Caranthir, Curufin, Amrod & Amras. The only time Curufin had the chance to kinslay and probably should have done it was when he came across Eol but decides not to. Just realized how the Union of Maedhros could actually have been a success if it weren't for Celegorm and Curufin ruining things everywhere they went ( Doriath- Beren and Luhtien fiasco, Nargathrond- Finrod and Orodreth ).

One of my favourite elves in the Middle Earth universe. Yes I know he was essentially kinda evil but he has one of the biggest influences on the world of any other character. His knife Angrist was used to cut a Silmaril from Morgoth's crown and his son Celebrimbor forged the rings of power. He also met Eol, another of my favourite characters. After Feanor, he is the greatest smith that ever lived. (Though Matt says it's Celebrimbor) He also helped kill Dior, which for some inexplicable reason, I've never really liked.

I think in a very recent In Deep Geek video, perhaps the knife 'Angrist' was a weapon forged by perhaps the greatest Dwarf craftsman/weapon smith of the First Age, whose name eludes me at the moment.

The names are interesting. Name x means y, expressing certain traits the person actually has. I wonder whether (in universe) the names were given to the elven children after a few years, so they could be somewhat descriptive, or their parents had some idea about how their children will turn out.

Kind of yes. At birth they were given a name by their father, after a few years when their traits were more known they were given a name by their mother, and some Elves were given a sort of "nickname" usually based on their achievements or notable traits. The father-name is almost never used, most Elves were usually known by their mother-name translated into Sindarin. A notable exception is actually Galadriel, whose usual name is actually the nickname. Another example is Finrod Felagund, which are father-name and nickname respectively. It actually reminds me of Roman naming conventions, where you had a birth-name that's only used at home, a family name that's used everywhere else, and could get a nickname based on achievements. A good example of all three in order would be Gaius Iulius Caesar.

Hello all, i have a question about Middle Earth books. Currently reading Silmarilion (Finished the story of it moments ago, and now starting the Akalabeth chapter, what i want to know is, which book contains the entire story of Gil-Galad and all those Second Age stories with Celebrimbor, Sauron as Annatar and others? Loved the silmarilion so far, and i have the original LotR to read but i wanted to read the older stories before venturing into that. Sorry if there was a video explaining this, came straight to comments to get help honestly

Thats quite the lineage for the creator of the Rings of the 3rd Age. Celebrimbor descended from the greatest craftsman of all time. No wonder the Rings were so powerful. He obviously inherited his grandfather's talent. Unfortunate was his end and that he became an Orcish War Banner or an Orchish pinata. Too bad we dont see anymore descendents of Feanor as it seems Celebrimbor was the last one. If thats the case, then wouldnt that give Celebrimbor potential rights to become King of the Noldor during his lifetime?

When Maedhros decided to relinquish the crown in favor of Fingolfin, I think that ended any real claim on the crown for the line of Fëanor. I'd say that was for the best.

In my own eyes he was an actual king of the Noldors in Eregion - A crafty heaven - they did what they loved, without anyone bodering them :)

@AA Thank you! Funny enough I just watched a video that went over this today, most elves dont start growing facial hair until their 3rd age cycle which is thousands and thousands of years. Thats what I was told in said video anyway lol

True, and Maedhros was friends with the dwarf-king Azaghal of Belegost. However, Curufin was the only Noldo allowed to learn Khuzdul. Evidently, his friendship with the dwarves was much deeper: they seem to have considered him almost an honorary dwarf.

In Unfinished Tales, we have "The History of Galadriel and Celeborn", Chapter IV in Part II - The Second Age. There we have a section titled "The Elessar", where it is told that Enerdhil of Gondolin made a green gem with imprisoned sunlight within: elessar, the Elfstone. Enerdhil gave it to Idril and she gave it to Eärendil her son; and with him the gem passed away to Aman. Then the Elves say to things about the gem's final faith: either Olórin (already as Gandalf) brought it back to Middle-earth and gave it to Galadriel so she could pass it to its final owner (Aragorn II yet to be born); or that Celebrimbor received Galadriel in Eregion before Annatar's time there, and after talking to her he remembered his time in Gondolin and the work of Enerdhil his friend, and made her an Elfstone (similar to the first one but still lesser powerful), which was given to Celebrían her daughter, and so it came to Arwen and then to Aragorn II
