Orodreth's parentage and progeny are debated among fans to this day. Whether he was the brother or nephew of Galadriel, we know he was twice the ruler of elven kingdoms that fall to two of Morgoth's greatest servants - Glaurung and Sauron.

@davidlundquist1979
@davidlundquist1979 2 года назад
@@Enerdhil But wasn't Turin's pride and overconfidence a result of the curse? I forget the exact wording of what Morgoth said, but I seem to recall the gist of it was that it wouldn't prevent Hurin and his family from doing brave and heroic things. It was just that those endeavors would never turn out well, for themselves or for anyone else. Although the fact that Glaurung had to flat-out paralyze Turin during the sack of Nargothrond seems to indicate that the power of the curse was not absolute.
@Enerdhil
@Enerdhil 2 года назад
@@davidlundquist1979 This is the problem with many people nowadays: trying to make excuses to explain bad behavior when the clear reason is a lack of personal responsibility and/or accountability. Yes the Curse was always there, but in the end Turin still had "free will" to do all of the things he did. For example, chasing Saeros. He could have stopped chasing him long before Saeros ran blindly off the cliff and died. His own instincts seem to be kill first, ask questions later. Forweg, Brodda, Mîm Brandir, and even Turin himself were killed for what reason? You can't just decide to kill people because you are upset at them, or seek revenge, or want to take the easy way out of dealing with a difficult life. All of those reasons are neglecting your own personal responsibility and/or accountability. That is as evil as anything Morgoth does. Now, you can argue that perhaps Gurthang, with its own curse on Turin for killing Beleg, gave Turin no choice but to act evilly. Two curses on one man. However, Turin still had to choose whether he would do good or evil, and he chose to do evil almost 100% of the time. He was a trained warrior and his instincts were to kill, but still you need to ask yourself two questions: Who am I killing and Why am I killing him? Orcs? No problem. All of the people he killed, including Beleg? Not good. His brain'default setting was set on: KILL.😒

I always thought there must be something more to Orodreth following Turin's advice than just Turin being super charismatic. Orodreth was the one who lost Tol Sirion/Tol-in-Gaurhoth to Sauron, and later on he was unable to prevent Celegorm and Curufin from usurping the rule of Nargothrond. It's said that the reason Nargothrond abandoned open warfare was due to the fear placed in the hearts of the people by the words of Celegorm and Curufin. Perhaps Orodreth also felt guilt at not being there for Nirnaeth Arnoediad. I think Orodreth all along must have wanted a chance to redeem himself in battle and go out in a blaze of glory like his kin, but he probably deferred to the wishes of his people until Turin came along and was able to convince them otherwise.

Orodreth's death was unfair so I think. Yes, I know that He was stubborn(remember part with stone bridge of Nargothrond), but this cannot be reason of his death and death of his people. Only reason why they died was that Morgoth wanted it. This was Morgoth's revenge for Finrod's help(Beren successfully stole Silmaril from Morgoth's iron crown, because Finrod, king of Nargothrond saved Beren's life).

@aesir1ases64 2 года назад
Well ... to me Silver is closer to black than gold, I think its explicitly said all of those from Finarfin line had blonde hair, because they took more of their Vanyar heritage than Noldor heritage, Fingolfin takes more Noldor though, so to me it makes more sense thematically to have Gil Galad from Fingolfin's line.
@Chociewitka
@Chociewitka 2 года назад
@@aesir1ases64 As far I understand Gil-Galad's silver hair comes from his Sinda mother who - while unnamed - seems to belong to extended Thingol's kin (who are generally fair-haired - blonde, grey, silver and white haired - the rest of the Sindar is black-haired the same way that the Noldor generally are - (except for Thingol's direct descendants who do inherit Melian's black hair). Fingon seems unmarried but if he were married he could not have been married to a Telerin lady in Valinor as he later fought the Teleri in the 1st Kinslaying and for the same reason no Sinda lady would ever have wed him in ME. So how he can have a son with a Teler/Sinda? Whereas Finarfin was wed to the Teler Eärwen - Thingol's niece - as such all of his line is Thingol's kin per default. Orodreth would have had no trouble marrying a distant cousin in ME and being fair-haired himself, having a fair-haired son.

Are there any reason why Tolkien prefer Orodreth to be Angrod's son over Finarfin's? For Gil-galad, it is very clear that there would be a problem of heritage of the high-kingship from Fingon to Turgon, if Gil-galad is Fingon's son. Are there equivalent reason for Orodreth's case?

If there's a reason, Tolkien did not write it down
@sophiejones3554
@sophiejones3554 2 года назад
Tolkien never said, but I can think of two reasons: 1) it would be weird if Angrod was married (as he is in all versions) but had no children. That would at the very least be something that needed explanation since having children is like one of the main reasons to be married in elven culture. 2) If Finrod and Turgon are the same age, then that only leaves three hundred years before the Darkening. Either Orodreth is Aegnor’s twin (or Angrod’s twin), or Eärwen got pregnant while she still had a small child in the house. Which just does not make logical sense if elves need to *choose* to have kids. It would also make Galadriel and Celebrimbor exactly the same age which just does not make sense with their later relationship dynamic. Galadriel is clearly the elder here. But an Orodreth who came of age on the Helcaraxë absolutely makes sense of his comraderie with Túrin and disdain for the advice of Ulmo.
@BasedHorrigan
@BasedHorrigan Год назад
Everyone calls Orodreth a weak leader for letting Túrin influence his decision-making, but really he acknowledges the suicide that is both the Ninrnaeth and Saurons assault on Minas Tirith. Yet after the Battle of Innumerable Tears, what other allies do the elves of Nargothrond have? Gondolin is too far up north and Círdan is too far south.. No. He decides to goes balls in. No more retreating. He goes in and tries to take as many of Morgoths servants with him.

I don't like the idea of Orodreth being Gil-galad's father. The idea of Gil-galad being the son of Fingon is a lot more entertaining. It adds some cool analogies. You know, Fingolfin fighting single-handed with Morgoth and his grandson Gil-galad fighting Sauron. It also adds excitement to the second age because you know that there is still a ,close direct descendent of Fingolfin left in middle earth after the first age.

Sauron is the most powerful Maia, the balrogs were corrupted by Morgoth on a different matter. Balrogs supposedly were kinda “human form” and could talk and be intelligent, so their way in movies and such isn’t very specific

The balrogs joined Melkor in the discord,and kinda like Eonwë and olorin served Manwë,the balrogs served Melkor,meanwhile Sauron was a servant of aulë and didn't join Melkor's discord in the ainulindale.

This is one I believe JRRT got wrong. Pushing Orodreth down a generation just seems like unnecessary meddling, and it's difficult to see what JRRT was trying to achieve by this, if not to further weaken his character. More grievous is the parentage of Gil Galad. By having Orodreth be his father, the high kingship of the Noldor in Middle-earth transfers from the house of Fingolfin to the house of Finarfin. That just feels wrong, and Fingon as his father is clearly the better solution. I'd be reasonably certain that if the implications of Orodreth as Gil Galad's father had been pointed out to JRRT, he would have agreed that it was wrong and abandoned the idea.

Some further thoughts on this. The house of Feanor was dispossessed by the house of Fingolfin in Middle-earth. Maedhros said "you will lead and I will follow" to Fingolfin, not to Finarfin. If the high kingship didn't stay with the house of Fingolfin, why did Celebrimbor not have a claim? Elrond is also descended from the house of Fingolfin.

Having Gil-galad as Fingon's son, that would cause a problem in the High Kingship: Turgon (who received the crown after Fingon's death) would be Gil-galad's uncle. A uncle versus nephew fight for the thorne was not a possibility what Tolkien had in mind. And personally, I don't see a problem of the Kingship to pass from one Great House to another. As for Orodreth's change, in the first versions of the story he was more important: he was the original King of Nargothrond, not Finrod Felagund. He even had children. But, as with everything, Tolkien changed his mind over time, diminishing Orodreth's importance

@@leonardofaber5823 It is quite common among nobility to inherit the kingdom from your own brother if your son is young or inexperienced. It is even normal to do it at critical moments when someone experienced is needed to make decisions. Moreover, Carlos V inherited the throne of the empire to his brother Fernando and not to his son Felipe, because he had the idea that when Fernando died he would inherit the Empire from Felipe, but when he realized that the government of the empire was leaving to turn into a problem he decided to leave the Empire to Fernando and his offspring. On the other hand, it seems very strange and forced to me that the title of the supreme king of the noldor passes from the house of Fingolfin to that of Finarfin. Since Finarfin's sons most of the time stayed out of events regarding Morgoth. while the house of Fingolfin was very committed to the fight against Morgoth and they were the leaders along with Maedhros in the fight against the dark lord

@@Aioradeleo27 I get the points. But we saddly have no answers to why exactly Tolkien changed his mind about the topic. Maybe he saw it as a normal thing withing the Legendarium. We can only especulate

I don't think NotR gets enough credit for how intriguing and enticing his intros are. The way he begins every video with what he says and how he enunciates it really gets you excited for the video while also setting a mood that I'll call "Tolkien-esque". That same feeling you get when watching LotR or especially when sitting alone reading it for the first time. It's just really amazing that somebody else can produce those same feelings!

In my opinion it makes more sense for Gil-Galad to be the son of Orodreth. If he was the son of Fingon then that would mean Turgon would not automatically become high king, he cannot rule all the Ñoldor from Gondolin and he isn’t Fingon’s heir. It follows Agnatic primogeniture, and this is only not the case in rare circumstances.

now i know she hasn't any big role in middle earth but since she served both Morgoth and Sauron, is there any chance of getting a video about Thuringwethil, the Maia that had the shape of a Vampyre ?? Would love to find more about that character :))

Imagine the literal lord of water giving you a message and being like "That bridge isn't a great idea man" but instead taking the advice of a man cursed by the lord of darkness instead. Sure, it's a tragic end but I mean, yeesh.

Right?? Like, you've lived for thousands of years and witnessed how many dooms? I feel like at this point, the Tolkiens were trying to fast-forward the timeline toward the inevitable doom that ends the First Age. I'd call it lazy writing, but that seems like an impossible insult to lob at the Tolkiens...

In his last writings, Tolkien changed Orodreth's name to Artaher (Quenya) / Arothir (Sindarin), both meaning "Noble Lord". However, it was never introduced in any narratives, so Christopher Tolkien left the name Orodreth unchanged.

Unfortunately Orodreth was not a very strong leader - Finrod would never have been persuaded by an overconfident and hubristic Turin, but Orodreth did not have his Finrod’s strength of character.

Sad that Orodreth got sucked into the curse, though I do think some of the curse lay within Turin himself as Gwindor pointed out. That said, I like the idea that Orodreth was the father of Gil-Galad and that just before he set out for battle, that he sent his wife and son to the Grey Havens in the hopes that they may live. With Finduilas too stubborn to leave without Gwindor (and Turin of course), or so I've always thought. This was a great video.

Would love to see a video on what happened to sauron just after the ring was cut from his hand, did he simply vanish like in the films? Or did he retreat from Isildur, still very much alive just without his ring? Also, if he did 'vanish', it would be interesting to know how he came back and how he became the Necromancer, Love the vids

I'm assuming that as a Maia, he lost his physical form the way he did when Numenor fell because the Valar dropped the ocean on his head. The spirit or Fea of a Maia is independent of their hroa, or body, in Tolkien, and though it costs them strength, they can make a new one. It just takes time to regather themselves. That's why Galndalf was able to return after his original body was killed by the Balrog, though he was sent back with more power, not less. So Sauron did "vanish" in that his physical body was broken and destroyed, but his spirit self remained to slink away in the same realm the Nazgul inhabit, like a wraith of himself. When they describe the dark power "gathering itself" they mean that literally, gathering strength and will to reform a physical al body again, then recovering their spiritual strength from the effort of rebuilding that body.

Great video, as always! About the parenting of Orodreth and Gil Galad, it would be an interesting topic for a video, maybe to be covered along some other major differences between the Silmarillion and other sources of the Lore. Character origins, major plots and stories that were changed by Tolkien between one and some other of his letters and so... (English is not my mother tongue, so, sorry if this is a bit confusing lol)
