Here is our process for making helical bent laminations. The pieces in the video happen to be handrail for a spiral stair case but the process works for all sorts of curved and twisted parts. We made around 120 linear feet of helical rail, and about 30 linear feet of flat curved rail for this project.
Thanks for watching and keep making!

The wood we are using is walnut, cut from a single board and reassembled in order. The laminations are 1/4" thick. The glue is gorilla glue which has a long open time (about 15 minutes) and dries rigid. Yellow glue will yawn (stretch) over time causing the laminations to slip relative to each other so we don't use it for bent laminations.

Just curious, do you use the same form for both the stringers and the handrail, or do you have to adjust it because they end up being slightly different radii? Awesome work BTW

How are you laying out your helical on the studs to get correct flow from top to bottom for your blocks?

Could you share how you decide the dimensions for making the curved model? How did you measure the degree the railing should bend and ascend to match the stairs?

Tyler Ladig To determine the rise/run and inside diameter of the railing we made a cardboard template of the actual metal rail that we were going to attach the hardwood handrail to. We took large sheets of 1/4" cardboard to the site, (which is flexible enough to conform to the spiral railing) put it on the metal rail, and traced the metal rail directly on to the underside of the cardboard. We then cut the shape out and put it back on the metal rail just as the final wood handrail would sit. We cut a few more strips of cardboard and hot glued them together to make a helical pattern. It's like using the actual staircase as your template and making a cardboard mockup of the rail that you can take back to your shop. If there is no existing rail to work from you can just use the stringers to do the same thing before the treads go on. Hope this helps!

I used tightbond glue. I go to the house and bend onsite. In my opinion, gorilla glue for me was way to messy and if gotten on skin, I would have to wear it off.

If you can weld, make your own. There is another channel on RU-vid making glulam beams (sorry, forget the name), and he made a ton of clamps himself using flat bar stock.
