Customer requested I remove 9.5mm (3/8”) off this part to allow his back sprocket to be in line with his front sprocket. There was still a considerable amount of “meat” left for structural integrity so in my opinion there was enough there to take on the job. It was quite an interesting job to say the least! Thank You for watching and hope you enjoy the video.

Perfect example here why jaw extensions are a must have. I have 8" long jaws and couldn't manage without them. Hey Richard... there's always a way. Pressure turning worked well here on aluminium. Good job as all ways. 👏👍

I love theses little one off jobs. They keep the noggin a ticking. We always end up with a drawer or shelf of once used jigs collecting dust till one day there it is and saves the day. After 15 + years I had a wonderful selection of goodies that would work or be modified one more time to make the job happen. Nice job fella. Great to see you again.

Really enjoy your videos Richard. So many videos involve CNC, or million dollar shops full of equipment. It's good to see someone still with an Atlas lathe (like me) turning out some good work solving problems for customers. Thank you.

Very nice job. Funny as soon as I saw what you had to do I was thinking of the same solution to your mounting problem that you came up with. Had to do a job like that on my lathe too. Some of your jobs are quite unique, it would be nice to see them installed in the end item sometimes. Thanks for sharing. Best Wishes n Blessings. Keith Noneya

GET A PRESSURE WASHER and attach a back-blast (dirt flying back at you) shield to it (hand crafted, like just tape a plastic trash can lid close to the end of the nozzle) IT CLEANS THINGS LIKE MAGIC. IT'S LIKE 150$ FOR A KARCHER ONE. And for light duty they're relatively great!

Hi Richard, You sound serious, surely do hope that things work out for you. Am not in south Florida just now, working up north for a spell and I don't know of anything going on down there just now. Very good video, hope your customer appreciates the extra work it takes for these "little" projects. They seem small but even small projects take time and experience.

Good job, personally I'd just tack whatever is fair onto the bill rather than sell the customer the whole piece of aluminum he doesn't need and that I could use the rest of in the future.

@MakinSumthinFromNuthin 6 лет назад
Thanks Dan, I quoted one price, but after a bit of time spent I knew it was gonna require more money....just for the time. The machining didnt take long, may 35 min since I was taking small cuts. It was all about set up time to make sure it didnt get botched. I dont like changing my quoted price....had to in this case. The part was a nightmare to hold....LOL You can email me and will tell you, link in video description Richard

I hope you charged your customer for that aluminum cylinder, but only the difference in price between the original size, and the new smaller size :p otherwise you gotta give him that whole thing :p I wonder if there was a better way to grab this into the lathe. Some inside-out expanding jaws, maybe? Just three/four jaw should've been enough on the inside with a smaller chuck? I'm thinking it'd hurt/damage the inside though. Some fancy high tech expanding external collets maybe?
@MakinSumthinFromNuthin
@MakinSumthinFromNuthin 6 лет назад
I had another way I was gonna do it but this one seemed to be the most accurate & simplest at the time. Hey, that aluminum was supposed to be my spindle nut....may still work tho
@JamesDedmon
@JamesDedmon 6 лет назад
Great solution to the problem. I understand the price of aluminum just picked up a 1 1/8” x 3’ drop it was $28. Since you do aluminum casting have you tried to do round stock? Hopefully you get things straightened out
@MakinSumthinFromNuthin
@MakinSumthinFromNuthin 6 лет назад
I had cast the round stock shown in the video, it was going to be a spindle nut for when I am using my ER32 collet set. Thanks for the kind words :)
@5tr41ghtGuy
@5tr41ghtGuy 6 лет назад
Nice job Richard! I am curious why the customer wanted that modification, since it will bring the chain 9.5mm closer to the tire. Usually the chain is about as close to the tire as possible in the stock configuration.
@MakinSumthinFromNuthin
@MakinSumthinFromNuthin 6 лет назад
he said it was from a diff model bike, and needed a mod to fit his.... "Customer requested I remove 9.5mm (3/8”) off this part to allow his back sprocket to be in line with his front sprocket."

I'm trying to do the exact same thing with what looks like this exact same hub. This is like a Suzuki 1998-2003 GSX600/750, or like a 88-90 GSX-R750. Part # 64611-17C01 A lot of people do GSX-R Fork swaps on older vintage bikes, like in my case CB550 and CB750's. Along with that fork swap it is much easier to just use the GSX-R's front wheel instead of buying / making a custom hub to fit the original spokes again. That's where this comes in, you need a matching sport bike rear wheel to complete the look. On CB550's while trying to fit Sport Bike rear wheels, depending on the wheel the sprocket is usually too close to the swingarm / not in line with the front sprocket. So you get a offset front sprocket, measure the difference, and start cutting the sprocket carrier to get that chain to line up =D. My parts aren't here yet but this is pretty much exactly what I planned on doing. I was hoping the sprocket carrier wouldn't be too thin where it matters when it's done and my chain stays away from the wheel!
