Cushie Butterfield & Keep Your Feet Still Geordie Hinnie
.
Geordie Ridley (1835-1864) of Gateshead was a regular entertainer at Newcastle's pubs, clubs, social gatherings and music halls; the Grainger, the Wheatsheaf and the Tyne Concert Hall . He wrote Cushie Butterfield as a parody of the more genteel London stage song "Pretty Polly Perkins Of Paddington Green", which was written by Harry Clifton, which in turn Clifton had based on the traditional air "Nightingales Sing".
.
Geordie started his working life down the pit as a trapper boy at around age 8 at Oakwellgate Colliery, then moving on to Goose Pit. Around his early twenties, he moved to the heavy Engineering firm, Messrs Hawks, Crawshay & Son, as a wagon rider where, after three years, he sustained terrible injuries when he was crushed by a runaway wagon. This forced him out of the mines and onto the music hall stage. His was a brief but very productive career. Never really getting back to full health after his injuries, Geordie died in Gateshead at age 29.
.
Joe Wilson (1841-1875) of Newcastle was another renowned Tyneside music hall comedian and singer; performing more or less the same circuit as Geordie Ridley, a regular at Balmbra's Music Hall, and a more prolific contemporary of Ridley's. He wrote "Keep Your Feet Still Geordie Hinnie" to the tune of " My Darling Nellie Grey", which is also very similar to "Maggie May".
Joe started his working life as a printer and for a time he published and distributed his own songs. Joe's career as a performer was linked to his printing business and he was quite successful. However, he moved away from performing - not completely, though - to more stable employment, becoming the publican of The Adelaide in Newcastle. Eventually, declining health forced Joe into convalescence. Like his father before him, Joe had contracted TB. Rowly Harrison, another local character and publican of The Commercial in Winlaton, took him in to live at the pub at the end of Joe's life. Joe died at age 34.

Very interesting histories of Geordie Ridley and Joe Wilson, both of whom died tragically young. So sad. But I guess they were amongst many of theat era whose life chances were very limited at that time. Great stuff. Love and peace.

My father was a Geordie from South Shields. He had his lung shot through in the Machine Gun Corps in WWI. When he recovered (and he was one of the lucky ones) he emigrated to the USA and made his fortune, but he never, never stopped singing Keep your Feet Still Geordie Hinny and Blaydon Races. I swear I can hear him now, although he died in 1978.

Joe Wilson is my great grandfather, discovered this through Ancestry in 2015. Bard of Tyneside, born 1841 died 1875,... singer/ songwriter, wrote 360 songs in his short lifetime, dying of TB age 33. (note he was a twin, his brother Thomas, who became his manager). A touring musical play written by Newcastle playwright Ed Waugh toured the area in September 2018. Dave Harker, author historian wrote ‘The Gallowgate Lad: The Life and Songs of Joe Wilson’, published 2017. Myself and two of my siblings from Canada have visited Newcastle over the years, very proud of our Joe. A Blue Heritage Plaque was placed on his birthplace at 8 Stowell Street, (in Chinatown area, building now a Chinese Express). ‘Keep yor feet still Geordie hinny’, is his most recognized song to contemporary audiences, but his prolific song writing shows his great desire to honour the working class, in song and recitations, telling stories of the common people, their joys, sorrows, laughter and sadness. Someone mentioned two of his songs here, ‘ The Row upon the Stairs’ and ‘Dinnet Clash the door’.... ‘The Row’ being a hilarious rendering of two women arguing over who has cleaned the Stairs best, with much bickering back and forth, a comedic skit set to music. The British Library re published ‘ ‘Tyneside Songs and Drolleries, Readings and Temperance Songs...Collected Edition. Joseph Wilson’, originally published around 1890. On his gravestone at Jesmond Old Cemetery is the inscription of his words... It’s been me aim t’ hev a place i’ the hearts o’ th’ Tyneside people, wi’ writing bits o’ hyemly sangs aw think they’ll sing’. The play, and book and an Annual Joe Wilson Night in its 4th year (on his birthdate November 29, has brought his songs to new audiences. Joe Wilson lives on! (Kasandra Wilson, now an honourary Geordie, proud to be).

The gentleman singing was born in Scotswood and brought up in Benwell. He probably has more Geordie in his little finger than you have in you're whole body.
