Custer State Park Overview - South Dakota
Custer State Park is a massive 71,000 acre park with 9 separate campgrounds. The park has cabins and 4 lodges as well as tent camping and RV camping. It sports several camp stores, a couple of places where you can fill you vehicle with gas, and at least a couple of laundromats. At least a couple of restaurants are inside the park.
Custer State Park has a flat $20 fee to enter the park. The pass is good for 6 nights and 7 days. If you are going to stay longer than 7 days, you will want to be a year long pass for $36 which is good from May of this year until May of next year.
The Custer State Park Visitor Center is quite large and packed with information about the park. The rangers are most helpful.
Three of the campgrounds in Custer State Park are located on lakes. We seen people on paddle boards and in kayaks and canoes enjoying the water.
You can buy a one day fishing license at one of the camp stores and fish any o the lakes in the park. We need to note that three single day fishing licenses are cheaper than a 3 day license.
You can also swim in the lakes. When we were there in September, the temperature never got to 80 degrees, yet people were swimming every day.
Also, within the park are three scenic loops that we highly recommend you drive. They are the Iron Mountain Road, Needles Highway, and the wildlife loop.
Our campground, Center Lake Campground, is just 16 miles from Mount Rushmore. Keystone is close to Custer State Park, and it is a great tourist destination. Custer State Park is near both Wind Cave and Jewel Cave. The Crazy Horse Monument is close to the park, and the Mammoth Site and Museum in Hot Springs, South Dakota is relatively close to the park.
All of the campgrounds in Custer State Park require reservations. For Center Lake Campground, same day reservations are required.
Custer State Park has a bison herd of about 1,300 - 1,400. Every year the park has what they call a buffalo roundup where they gather the bison in one location and vaccinate the young. They also thin the herd if they need to. The rangers know how many bison the land in the park will sustain. They do not put out any food for the bison, so they don't want the herd to become larger than the land can feed.
For all nine campgrounds in Custer State Park, there is a single dump station. It will accommodate 2 RVs, and there is potable water at the dump station.
We do recommend that you get a map at Wall Drug or possibly elsewhere before you start to drive in the park with your RV. There are places on Iron Mountain Road and Needles Highway where you cannot take an RV. It may be too low and too narrow.

We have travelled around the country quite extensively-we rate this state park, in conjunction with the nearby features like Mt Rushmore and Wind Cave to be, at least, a top five destination. Wild life, fishing, camping, hiking, bike riding-just the natural beauty of the area is awe-inspiring. Our 12 and 14 year old grandsons camped with us there for about a week last summer and they were/remain ecstatic about the experience...they really cannot pick a favorite thing about the experience-"It was all good!".

This video was one of your best. The screen shots of maps, facilities chart, and tunnels was VERY INFORMATIVE. This video was an example of the two teachers explaining the relevant information to potential visitors. I rate this video 10 out of 10 stars.

Wow! Just wow! We were in this area for just 3 or 4 nights many years ago. I remember thinking that we could spend a week there. Y'all did! We only drove through Custer SP. I'm glad you said they also have cabins and lodges. I did not know that, and I'm glad to know this is a convenient place to stay to explore that whole area. And I've never heard of buffalo roundup there. I will file that in the back of my mind for timing in the future.

From Custer State Park, you aren't far at all from Mount Rushmore, the scenic drives, the Crazy Horse monument, Deadwood, and other places of interest. The buffalo roundup is at the end September.

Welcome to Two Tired Teachers. I didn't think I recognized your name, but I don't remember them all. We love the forests too but the Badlands were amazing. We camped on the beach at the Padre Island National Seashore. Again, no trees but an amazing experience. By the way, we get comments from Cassie fairly often. She is always so encouraging.

We were there last August and it was awesome. One of our favorite parks too. We stayed 8 days and did all of those things. We travel with E-bikes and rode everywhere we could especially the Mickleson Rail Trail. We also kept going and camped near the Devil’s Tower as well as Sturges, Deadwood, and Sundance. Thank you for your reviews, they are awesome.

Thank you very much for having snap shots of information of the campgrounds. You also video it long enough so I can pause the video and read it. So many other you tubers show an important shot for a fraction of a second and you cannot pause it. I am learning so much on where to camp I can't thank you 2 enough. Please have a happy, healthy and safe 2021.

It is an awesome park. We were there in September, and it was as near perfect as I think we could get. (Our videos are almost always 2 - 4 months behind the current date. That gives us time to travel and upload videos and respond to comments.)

Did you drive from Texas and up ? Where did you stay on the way and how long did it take ?
@TwoTiredTeachers
@TwoTiredTeachers 3 года назад
We drove from here to Denton to see our aunt. From there we drove just south of Wichita, Kansas and stayed in a city park with hookups. Our next stop was the Nebraska National Forest where we stayed for 3 days. Then we were at Wall Drug before we made it to Wall dispersed camping at the edge of the Badlands.

You could ride the bikes. As long as you stay 50' away from the bison, they shouldn't bother you. We didn't ride at Custer State Park.

You can't make reservations before the day you plan to stay. We called at 6:00 AM and were able to get a site.
