Despite the seemingly obvious option to install a Savvy or Novak transfer case cable shifter to cure our 4wd shifting woes, we chose to do things the hard way...yet again. The $4 option shown in this video is a very functional alternative to the expensive cable options.

You were like 22 episodes into this build before I found your channel. I am binge watching now, trying to catch up. Every single video has been great. You have a way of explaining and simplifying everything you are doing. I am learning A LOT! Thanks for the vids. BTW, I have just recently purchased my first Wrangler and it's an '03 Sahara. It has several mods (4" lift, 33's, aftermarket bumpers and sliders, etc,) but there is always room for improvments. You are giving me the confidence to tackle some projects myself.

Thanks Mark! Wranglers seem to be some of the most DIY-friendly vehicles out there...they're about as simply built as you can get for a modern vehicle and have a good following with a large community of people willing to offer advice (jeepforum.com, wranglertjforum.com, etc)

Fabrication hardware Rule #1: Whenever possible, go Grade 8. 😁 On the plastic bushings, Hurst used to make a steel bushing set up for their shifters. Don't know if they still do. When I had access to a lathe, I measured a steel one and made a set of brass bushings.

Nice job on this. Great improvement over OEM when so many guys are working on transfer case lowering to improve driveline angles.

I'm doing a cheaper TJ build right now, also. I purposely bought the 2.5L because fuel economy is much better on the trail where I spend most of my time, and I'm in no hurry. IMO the 4.0L has two dead weight cylinders until the TJ gets on an interstate and then it's the opposite. My plans are 35''s on 3''SL, 1''BL, 5.13 gears in an LJ D44, and XJ D30hp CAD, both locked. Looking forward to seeing what you going to do next! I've learned the hard way that a new 2.5L power steering reservoir is obsolete and the heater core can no longer be bought from Jeep. So although the aftermarket imported HCs are only $40, they take 4-8 hours to install and most considered it lucky if they make it past one season.

If all goes according to plan we're going to have VERY similarly built jeeps when everything's said and done. 4 cyls are underrated for sure, but that just means better prices for those of us who know their potential! Not looking forward to pulling the dash to get heat back in this thing, really hoping it's a bad blend door motor instead of a heater core but not expecting to be so lucky!

they did work great from the factory and still do. problem is no one replaces the wear items (green bushing, two black bushings, brass collar and protective rubber sleeve) and they get sloppy and wear themselves out even more. also lifts and tcase repositioning and body lifts throws them all out of whack. hence the cable shifter. but yes, they did work great from the factory.
@dironaa
@dironaa 4 года назад
I'll take your word for it. Rust is a major culprit in my neck of the woods; the steel swells in the bushings and everything binds up.
@pawpatina

@@dironaa yea i can tell from the videos i am seeing... it being such small steel, doesn't take much to disintegrate it all... hence why they make a cable shifter kit. hahaha

I'd argue that I often put far too much effort into achieving very little lol. Although I'm happy with the result a cable shifter would have been a much easier solution.

Awesome. I want one! Regarding Savvy's cable shifter: it's designed by Blaine Johnson, aka - mrblaine, the guy people see on forums with the wizard avatar. The man has invented more top quality, super well known products for the Jeep world than I could count. CTM u-joints, ORO U-Turn steering, all the Everyman challenge KOH winning rigs, etc etc. Ya, Savvy stuff is a pretty penny, but it's some of the best stuff on the market, designed by the "Jeep Wizard". BTW: if anyone reading this is looking for brakes, Black Magic is Blaine's company and you can't beat the stopping power of his VANCO Big Brake kit.

Hey are you an engineer or mechanic? I would guess to say mechanic due to your skills under the Jeep. However, you think a lot like an engineer in the way of solving problems. I have 6 years of college in engineering and you approach the challenges better than I would. Good job man!

Nice work, those plastic fender Guards on the jeep, i took mines off sanded them to give it a rough surface then i used Bedliner in the can and sprayed them and turned out great, thought maybe i could save you a few bucks making them look good, Don

good night. i have a problem with my 1999 jeep wrangler. if you could help me. I cannot remove the 4x4, the lever operates with all its movements but the cam that is attached to the transfer case operates back and forth but the shaft that comes out of the transfer case does not move. apparently I think that the cam attached to the rods does not actuate it, apparently it turns on the shaft. If you don't mind, you could advise me with this. Thanks and best regards and a very good video.
@dironaa
@dironaa 2 года назад
Hmm I don't think I've ever heard of this happening but if I'm understanding the issue correctly it sounds like the stub that comes out of the transfer case is broken? If thats the case you're probably best off finding a used properly functioning transfer case to install in place of the old one rather than breaking into the current one and replacing parts

About how many total hours of labor in the build up to this point?
@dironaa
@dironaa 4 года назад
Tough to say. I don't work fast so I probably spend anywhere between 5 and 20 hrs per episode. Some episodoes were more, some episodes were less. And that's just labor. if I get into a project and realize I don't have a part that I'll need there's up to a week added to the timeline waiting for the part to show up, assuming it's not available locally.
