I agree. It is amazing to see the advancements in technology. It also makes you really appreciate when you see a drawing that was made in the 50’s and you think about how much time and attention that machinist had to put in to make the part

@Jessie_Smith
@Jessie_Smith 2 года назад
Thank you! I like this machine as well. One of the main issues you run into with 5 axis machines is clearance and travel. The tapered spindle housing is really nice for extra clearance when you are down around the table and there is no column that travels behind it like some 5 axis machines I have programmed. And since this is a BC machine instead of an AC setup, you get more travel out of the rotation since you have more X travel than Y. We constantly had to build custom fixtures at my last job because we were either too close to the table so the column would hit or it was too far away and we would run out of Y travel

Actually, she just released a bunch of Kid Series videos that are under TITAN KIDS at academy.titansofcnc.com/category/titan-kids. She also helps with our online titansofcnctooling.com She couldn’t move to Texas because of family reasons so I kept her on payroll and let her work remote. You said that because the tool tilts, the holder is able to stay away from the part allowing for short tool stickout.Yet iIt seems your tool is sticking out way farther than it needs to be in this video. Unless there is something that I'm not seeing.
@cryptonian4114
@cryptonian4114 2 года назад
Its safe to assume they have many other uses for that tool in mind
@Jessie_Smith
@Jessie_Smith 2 года назад
This tool was one that we already had made and I wasn’t planning on using it for this project at first. This tool had a neck relief that was 3.5” long. So that forced me to hang it out that far. So yes it was sticking out way further than it needed to be for this particular part. I was mainly speaking in general terms. If you were doing a deep pocket and you traditionally used a ballnose verses a barrel mill you would be able to get away with shorter stick outs with the barrel tool
@callmeasuka5849
@callmeasuka5849 2 года назад
I haven't worked with with such tools yet, yes they decrease the cicle time but doesn't it also decrease the accuracy of the machined features?
@Jessie_Smith
@Jessie_Smith 2 года назад
If you have a good cam software and you set the toolpath tolerances correctly it will be just as accurate as anything else
@85CEKR
@85CEKR 2 года назад
We use emuge circle segment cutters and they talk about how tight their tolerances are on the grinding, apparently significantly tighter than regular tools, it makes sense to me that as long as the grinding of the tool is as precise and your setup is ridged enough, it should be just as accurate. I agree though that there's probably more likely to be error than with a regular ball nose if anything isn't perfect.
@callmeasuka5849
@callmeasuka5849 2 года назад
@@85CEKR Yeah, I mean you'd mill a steep wall with a ball mill or a segment cutter the segment cutter wouldn't have the same even surface cause of the large radius and step down or am I overlooking something
@85CEKR
@85CEKR 2 года назад
@@callmeasuka5849 well not really, we use one tool alot that has a 150mm rad, so if your calculating scallop height you can use the same stepover as if you were using a 300mm diameter ball nose. So it's the same or better.

I designed a "bullet tool" years ago and have used it in medical to machine femoral implants. I refer to it as a bullet tool because the term barrel doesn't seem appropriate for a bullet shape.
