I love the idea of a custom meteorite box! The only problematic step for most people would be a precise enough 3D scan. I don't know if photogrammetry could do the job. And wow! That's a very nice piece of Pultusk! I would love to see what more is hidden in those drawers.

Photogrammetry depends a lot on the system used. Some are better than others, and scale is generally a challenge. (You can get a good shape model, but it might be too big or too small.) Another technique that seems to be replacing laser scanning is structured light scanning. But anyway, this video isn't so much a tutorial as it is, "Here's a thing I'm doing." Anyway, I will probably find an excuse in a future video to show off more of the meteorite collection. We've got a bunch of cool meteorites!

@@MackeMakerSpace here's one - a custom 3D printed display stand with a built in UV LED for Norton County, if you happen to have any in you collection. Any excuse will do. I know a bunch of very enthusiastic meteorite collectors who would love to see more of the Vatican collection, especially stuff that's not normally on display.

One trick I've seen in shipping packages for avionics is to suspend fragile goods in air between two foils. Turns out they're available off the shelf, look up suspension packaging. Definitely not as nice as your method, but a much more convenient alternative.

There are window boxes that do what you described that are commonly used for small meteorites. However, I have not seen anything like that for larger specimens. I will look into it. Thanks for bringing it to my attention. Meteorites are usually much denser than ordinary earth rock, so the mass of a larger specimen might complicate suspending them like that. I wouldn't want them to rip out of their cradle when a careless shipper drops the box.
