I was a mechanic in the Army and drove and worked on these vehicles for the majority my career and they are good vehicles. The first time I driven one of these was in Colorado back in the 90’s. It was like night and day comparing the older Army versions ( Duce and a half). Every time I see some one modifying one of these vehicle I’m motivated to watch. Awesome setup Sir!

I remember seeing your Unimog at Tybee Island and was in awe, however having built a few overland trucks, I find that with time, experience, technology, and need changes, each build becomes an evolution in setup. Looking forward to your adventure in this rig! Cheers

Great rig ! I am sure you’ve seen the info on the Cat C7 and the HEUI system for firing the injectors. There are upgrades available, especially screen filters on the inlet side to ensure that no particles in the oil get ingested into the high pressure HEUI pump. HEUI pump failure can be a bad thing - there’s plenty online about it - although l am sure you’ve already read about it, great build !

@@jeffcobuilds2660 So... this was the first time that I did not do it myself and had a local paint shop do it. Came out fantastic.I did spray all of the underside black and prepped the body for paint. I did not have the time and the fact it was such heavy pollen season I decided to leave it to the pros. Kinda hurt on the $$ side but its over :)

Fantastic Rig - Another great build. My question may seem somewhat inconsequential given the magnitude of the build, but here goes... What is the brand/model of the four storage containers over the cab? I've been searching for sturdy, weather proof containers for the back of THOR (my M923A2 6x6) and these look like they'd work perfectly.

Michael beautiful truck i've got the same truck and want to add 4-5 ft to the rear as u did . What did youframe the addition with ? looked like sq. tubing and i see you mounted it just inboard of the alum. angle framework of the orig. box. Did you just polt the framework to the box .. Awesome, good luck with your build. Yes, steel square tube that is bolted to the box. Would have done aluminum like the original but it is $$ and harder to weld.

I will work on that. Don't really have it down on paper. The layout involved a whole lot of blue tape on the floor and thousands of changes as I went.Now that it is done though I will try to properly document it.

Amazing Truck !! Very inspiring. If you added the 5 ft to the back is there a particular reason (besides availability) you didn't go with a M1083A 6X6 . Im currently looking at 1 and curious if you have any warnings. It appears to just be 3 ft longer. Any coaching / warnings you could offer?

They were harder to find and of course the cost plus having to buy 2 more tires every time and the extra moving parts that come with the converter between axles.

My mog had about 19 inches of ground clearance under the diff. The Stewart & Stevenson has just about 17 inches.

Our 1997 Ford CF8000 has 16" ground clearance. A couple-three years ago, we switched from 22.5 tires to 24.5 loggers.

What mileage do you get? L per 100km, Did/do you have any or many challenges in regards to regulations etc with your conversion and or when you take it to other countries?

No issues so far. I get around 8 miles per gallon.

@@drivetheglobe So in todays fuel costs at least $50 for every 100 miles you travel.....that hurts! Well you've got to "pay to play" so that's kind of irrelevant at this point. Nice buy/build!

I’m not really sure. It weighs about 22,000 pounds. In the states it is simply registered as a camper. Generally it is more of a factor where it will be licensed. I have driven some pretty big vehicles in Europe but they were not registered there.

Do you go offroading with that truck? To me it just seems too high to really go off the beaten track. What has your experience been? I live in south africa so we have lots of offroad options especially in our neighbouring countries.

Living in it full time. Currently in Baja Mexico. Have taken it on a number of tough tracks. Does well. It is a little big, but that’s what I use my motorbike for.

Bike rack is from a company called one up. Common on sprinter vans. They are light but I use a little ladder

Mike..... question on your ass end of truck ...... dove tail certainly keeps it in good departure angle realms... my question though is that big an extension sticking out beyond rear tires and maneuvering issues it may cause thru trees on curvy dirt trail on a trail etc. Have you found it to be an issue a little bit.... a lot..... not at all..... soso ???

Have honestly not had any issues whatsoever. The bump out is 5 feet and it is slightly onboard of the main box. Don’t know if that helps at all. Game changer for space inside though.

I do most of the work myself. Easily maintained as it is very common engine and tranny as well As drive train.

Thank you, gives enough storage under the bed without hurting the departure angle. The welder actually decided the angle before me. It is actually 113 degrees if you are curious.

the cab is Steyr part...... same cab as 12m18.. thousands of the cab were shipped to USA to produce the truck US military ordered from Stewart Stevens. Rest of truck is all America Iron designed and built by Stewart Stevens in US Texas. Yes some of the chassis and suspension mimicked the 12m18 as well.... but mimic and actual cab is the only tie to Steyr

Trucks are at auction between 10k-25k US. I did the work myself so hard to say but a lot cheaper than buying a commercial One.
