Not sure about in 2014, but today you can buy Kaizen foam (basically thin layers laminated into thick chunks) - much easier to work and much better protection. I buy from FastCap.com but imagine it's available from other sources as well.
You are right and it's actually the correct foam for this project but I didn't know about it then. Might do an update video soon on replacing this foam with the correct stuff.
