This was a dope video, I want to try and paint my Harley and watching video like this low key give me the courage to give it a go. You should do a video of your setup. Compressors, hoses, the lil make shift booth, etc.

Thanks. That’s a good idea. I have thought about doing that anyway, a real specific video. Check out one of my other videos. I did a full Harley paint job in a similar style with bigger flake.

Very cool to see that take shape. Urethane for your black as well? Dunno how I landed here, but now I'm subscribed and following. Thanks for sharing! 😎👍

Thanks👍 Yep. Just regular black basecoat for the black. A little over reduced so it sprays a little better through an airbrush.

Ok so…. Just something for you to try. The mailbox was already black, try scuffing the black with 600 grit, mix your flake with regular clear coat instead of clear basecoat and apply 3 coats, then go over that with 3 more coats of clear to bury the flake. Once dry the next day sand it smooth with 600 then start doing you designs. The black base with give it a much better look for the flake, once you go black you will never go back. Also Clearcoat is an excellent carrier for the flake. Like I said just something to try.

I’ve done flake over black. Just takes a lot more to cover. I’ve put flake in clear but only if it’s .015 or bigger. That tiny flake lays the same way in clear or intercoat it seems like. Thanks for the tips. So many different ways to do it.

Not at all saying what you did was wrong so please don’t take it that way. It turned out awesome!!! The flake I use is a mixture of .04 and .08. The smaller the flake usually the better the sparkle and can be sprayed out of a 1.3 gun.

I get it. Always looking for other ideas. I just don’t like sleeting clear in a surface I don’t know what it is who knows what’s on that mailbox, so I just seal it to play it safe. The truck roof I have a video up about was .015 over black base and I sprayed that from a 1.8 tip using clear, not intercoat. The motorcycle video was .004, .015 and some hide .025. Had to spray that with a 2.5 tip. The smal stuff does sparkle better for sure, but that old school big flake is cool on the right project too. Just takes so much to bury and cut flat.

So cool, I would like to attempt something similar, how long do you leave the candy paint and black basecoat to dry before removing the tape? Many thanks

Not too long. I only wait a few minutes after I spray. If the paint is realy dry it wants to pull up on the edges with the tape. Basecoat dries pretty quick.

What size flake do you use for just a metallic look, not a metal flake look?
@FlakeyMX495

You could just use a high metallic silver Basecoat. On this I think I used a .008 flake mixed with house of Kolor mini flake. You can get a .004 flake that is super fine.

What sealer did you use to prime? Is sealer better than primer?
@FlakeyMX495
@FlakeyMX495 6 месяцев назад
A sealer really is a type of primer. It provides a protective barrier between your Basecoat and anything underneath. Like high build primer, bodywork, etc. Since the mailbox was new I didn’t use any filler or other primer so just did the sealer over the original sanded finish and straight to Basecoat after it flashed.
