I designed a custom Starlink antenna mount for our Kodiak RV. In this video we'll begin the machining of the post mount that will bolt onto the rv and support the extension post.

The way you set a stop for the chamfers on those threaded holes is why I love your channel. You've got so much experience and it really helps me as a hobby machinist. I can't tell you how many times something you've shown in one of your videos has jumped to mind and saved me so much time. I'll never be able to repay the value you bring to my experience but I will make sure to pay it forward wherever I can. Thanks!

To me projects like this are one of the rewards of investing in machines and machine tools as a Hobby Machinist working in my tiny one car garage. My passion is the miniature steam engine world but about a month ago my son-in-law who is building a 70 Chevy Nova bracket racing Drag car called me and said he wanted to relocate the electric water pump (no belt driven accessory's, load on the motor) to a location on the fender well and asked if I could help. (mount kit is a couple hundred bucks) We took some measurements and came up with a sketch. I got a chunk of Billet Aluminum on line and a weekend end later he had a shinny new bracket. I had a blast making it and told myself a few times, I'm really glad I got into this hobby. I had a ton of fun, he saved a pile of money, it was a win/win.

It's obvious how the first 4 milling procedures would have been 90 degrees off of each other all the way around. However, once he moved to the last two procedures, he basically counted on the factory end of the piece to be 'square' with the previously milled edges. I realize, this part didn't need to be any more precise than how he did it. But what if I did want to mill a perfect cube? Put an indicator in the quill and ride up and down the side of clamped part? Or is there an easier way than that?
@Brian55126
@Brian55126 5 месяцев назад
Clamp into an angle plate that's laid on it's side . Or use long endmill and do sides as is in vice .
@Brian55126
@Brian55126 5 месяцев назад
Or just use precision square to stand it up in vice to use same facemill
@Jacob-5949
@Jacob-5949 5 месяцев назад
Depends on how accurate you need to be. For the highest precision, yes an indicator attached to the quill would be the way to go. If you are just looking for speed you could use a machinist square against the bottom of the vice and the side of the part, it would get you very close depending on the accuracy of the square.

Congratulations for the project, but I recommend it to install a high gain omnidirectional POE WiFi antenna in order to take advantage of any WiFi if present. I read all the comments and no one says that for the Starlink antenna, it seems like the best RV installation is flat mount by disabling the motor and perhaps using a flat mount kit. it is also possible to modify the cable by inserting an ethernet socket and a waterproof plug, paying attention to the connection as starlink has a proprietary cable layout. You must pay equal attention to the cable because it is a bit delicate and can cause malfunctions, it is better to make it bend at the top and secure it with plastic ties so that it does not get damaged at the antenna entry point. you can find a lot of information on these antennas and also on the new version, in the USA it works great everywhere even when mounted flat. Greetings from Italy, I really appreciate your works, congratulations.

Adam, have you ever thought about using the table with holes with a fence? I was thinking using one as a movable fence, posts built into the fence so you can simply drop it into the holes. Then the red factory style clamps that fit into the holes will tighten against the part and fence. I think I can use a table and other things to glue wood.

The clutch in the tap collet is set to not break the tap, so a short thread might strip out before that clutch disengages, since the clutches are adjustable you can set it to disengage at a lower force so that doesn't happen, if you remember to...

I mean, the sort of "camping" that we're talking about here is really "moving houses temporarily" and you have internet at home so...
