Thats awesome!! These are super fun bikes in any form so you will have a good time! Be sure to check out Jish on here as he is doing a GS250 heavily inspired by my bike. He makes amazing videos.
So. I have been watching your vids around a year now, and I'm finally feeling confident enough to start seriously working on my bike. Its an '82 GS450TXZ and its a complete basket case. The previous owner/s were not kind to the bike and its held together with zip-ties and that orange fake gasket goo. No airbox, jetted carbs, open mufflers, etc. You get the idea. Anywho, i'm gonna put you on my Zoom speed dial and get this thang running right if it kills us both! Ha Ha...Kidding. I only have like $800 in the bike thus far including new tires and cheap-o seat. It's gonna be an adventure for sure! PS: my Dad has an '81 GS450L that is bone stock and it runs like a top. I hate him. I'mma have to borrow his Service Manual and get to work!
The best approach is to break the bike down into each necessary task and just focus on one at a time so it doesn't seem so overwhelming. Make that checklist and check it off!
Probably does not apply here because of the vacuum petcock, but in with a leaky petcock vehicles I've been stranded a couple times when the carbs would overflow and pour gas into cylinders and therefore the oil. When the bike came up to temp, all the extra fuel in the oil would evaporate and create a super rich environment that would kill the idle. So just checking the level of and smelling the oil has become one of my quick/easy first steps.
That's always a good initial check to do with any bike. I've had a few bikes hydrolock such as that Bandit on my channel. I knew that wasn't the case with this bike due to having been through it top to bottom before. There is plenty more to come in the next videos.
I've already diagnosed this bike but the result will come out in the next episodes. When I built this bike originally I went through it top to bottom and many components are new like the intake manifolds.
Same problem for me.. I have discharging the battery because of bad stator coil, not filling at idle. That is solved, after that I saw bad isolation on ignition coils original japan grey one's so I'll decide to replace them. Now I get other problem with backfire at very high torque and than I stay without trotle. Stop, when go again is good at very high torque starts again
very very good channel.....try to put carb clean into the carbs, squirt ....false air leack. makes another tuning in the valves, a tuning with more slack. I don't know if these carburetors are cv, with a diaphragm check that to. sorry the inglis. mi name is Mark. do not give up the channel is very professional thanks
Thanks Mark! I had already confirmed it's not a fuel issue as you will see in the next videos of the diagnosis process. That's always a good simple test people should do though and one I've done many times. Episode 2 lands Monday and really starts getting into detail on what I find.
I have a 1980 GS450L and it has lost spark. I have replaced everything but the CDI box. If you were to replace a CDI box, what route would you take? I found one from Carmo from The Netherlands that would be around $450, They says it is an upgrade and is protected from bad regulator, and hooking battery up backwards. People are asking anywhere from $200-$800 for used ones on Ebay.. I only paid $800 for the bike years ago, and trying to get it back up and running again.
Well later in this repair series I end up replacing the CDI setup and retrofitting a Dyna system to it. Just didn't make sense to me to spend 500+ for a used system
Hey Christoffer, I made the seat for the bike. You can see more of it in the "payoff" video I did for the bike where I go over other details on it. Thank you!
I was riding my bike today and while i was riding it just started to back fire and turn of i got a new battery thinking that was the problem and it happend again i ride a 2002 yamaha r6 i think it might be the stator can anyone help?
