Ahh, dreams, lol. I usually dream about solving some problem, and then I wake up and still try to solve the imaginary problem. I literally have to tell myself to stop, lol. There isn't a problem to solve!!
I like it. If you put a pully at the very front of your rack system and a double pully block and tackle set suspended under the rack cross arms, you could pull the kayak up on top single handedly from the ground. Of coarse you would have to set the glass of wine down for a moment! 😉
I was just thinking the same thing! You guys communicate well and it's very calm to watch you two try out next things! Your husband is very handy and creative! Very well job done!
I have a Brooklyn PK13, it is a pedal kayak. They make a Tandem pedal too. Great to fish in and you get exercise. I enjoy mine as much a month as the wife allows. I call it my treadmill on the lake. LOL.
2x kayak cam straps will be very secure (nrs, etc.). Two tips - take care to always put a 1/2 twist in any strap so it doesn’t hum at highway speeds, and don’t over tighten ropes or straps tying down a plastic boat that will be in the sun, as they can impart kinks to the hull when it is softened by the sun.
That's awesome. We actually got 2 of the smaller fishing kayaks last spring. we debated a double and realized we would probably kill each other after trying to paddle it together.😂😂 Maybe we'll get a chance to paddle with you guys sometime.😉✌
I had a rear loading one all picked out but since my roof rack is already 7” high, I just didn’t want to go any higher than the kayak right on top of it. We’ll see, I may learn to live or hate this set up. 🤷♂️😂. Appreciate the suggestion!👍🙌
Looks good! I can only imagine, my little ten footer was a handful alone. A lot of the guys used those two wheel carts to get to the water, i just dragged mine. 👍👍
I want to see Dave pull an 8lb bass out of the water. I love kayak fishing. You can get where not even Jon boats can fish. I have fished 12" of water. You'd be amazed the fish are in 12" of water.
Rather than climbing around on the roof to load, put a long rope secured on the bow and pull it up from the ground in front of the van. Then all you need to do is stand on the ladder to secure it to the van.
Sold kayaks for years. Do not use s- hooks or rachet straps to tie down . Get some long feed through style straps. S hooks can come un hooked. Rachet can dent kayaks on a hot day.
Looks great, we may have to think about that for our cap. We carry two on our truck cap upright like tahr and have no problem with air pushing them up. Mine is self bailing like yours but Marcy's isn't so we have to watch unloading hers in the rain.
Thats an awesome idea, on mine I figured out to get my double kayak up and down on my own I have to use a hydraulic ladder rack, I got mine in the UK and so far its working great Sorry I can't add photos to help with the description, but it has a hydraulic caddy that comes down over the back of the van similar to your kayak
I almost went with the rear hydraulic loader but with my 6 inch roof rack I was worried about height. As it is I am now 10’6”. Might have to do that in the future though. Thanks 😁
@@CareyOnVagabond yeah it's definitely added to the height it's maybe 3.5 meters tall now 🤦♂️ as it's up on top of my rack above the roof vents 🤣 Awesome van though dude hope your getting some great adventures
Maybe you could put a pulley on the front of the rack, so you could pull it up without having to climb on the roof. Then you would just need to climb the ladder to secure it, and to release it when you want to take it down. You could also have another rope on the back to pull it off. Just a thought. 😎👍
Good thoughts but I still have to get on the roof to put the straps over the kayak. No way to do that from a ladder. Not sure I can guide the kayak exactly where I want it this way either. Definitely worth exploring something like this to make it easier though. Thanks!
@@CareyOnVagabond It seems to me if you could put the pulley in the right place centered on the rack the rope should guide it right down the center and pull it down. But you would have to test it out. If it works, it might make the process a bit simpler.
Thanks for the ideas but I guess I like the simplicity of no ropes and pulleys. I’d have to stand on the top of the ladder, Have a rope and pulley system in place to hook up and once I stood on the ladder and pulled it into place I would still have to get on the roof to disconnect the pulley system. Store that, and still have to be on the roof to tie it all down. I guess if it wasn’t so easy to just pull it on the roof and tie it down it might be the way to go. We’ll see. I’ll keep this in mind after using it a few times. Cheers!
Just back it down a boat ramp and give it a good push...NP. Don't let go of the rope though. LOL! Have to say, thought a life boat rigging would have been cooler.
Nice job however, as a kayaker with a big kayak like yours, I have spent many hours thinking about what is good and what is safe. I am concerned about 1 things - the j-racks. If you are not going to tilt the kayak on its side then they may fail over time. They are meant to be at around 95-100 degree angle not 180. I would suggest looking at Malone seawing carriers. Several kayak manufacturers have recommended them to me since they protect the boat.
Wow! Great ingenuity there Dave🤗🤗🤗🤗 look forward to seeing you all in on the water. Stealth blue so the fish won't see you lol Irene, I am loving your hair!! I would love to cut mine like that but...granddaughter who is 6 won't let me lol she said it's like Rupenzells' except with curls. Miss the mountain wrap....it would of looked great with that kayak! Wonder how the old rig is doing.....sure wish is was me that bought it.....the price of them is sooo Darn high now...ive been looking at the Revel ......200g!!!! 😲😲😲😩 Carey on😃
Another great mod Dave! Our LTV is 10'6", we usually have no height issues. Enjoy! Hopefully we can do some kayaking together some day, we just got one also (but a small inflatable).
I have been pondering a design to to the same thing only with two kayaks on our Promaster 2500. I was thinking about putting a pulley on the front so I could load and unload with one person. I like the looks of this!
Great build idea! Now Hubby is thinking of the possibilities for adding a roller for our racks on top of our truck cap. Thanks for the great videos, enjoy your kayak & travel safe.
No surprises here....perfection! Please research Greenland style paddles. It is the only way to go and you will enjoy making them. Buy 2 rough cut 2"x4" x 8' cedar boards.Cut in a "Bow tie" shape and then shape with a hand plane. In Vt. we use white cedar which cost $6.00. You can purchase one on line for about $120. Thank you.
Thanks for posting about Greenland style - never heard of it but after looking into it a bit, I look forward to trying one to see if it's a better fit for me and my shoulder issues:) Glad you brought it up.
Hi guys! Congratulations on the roof rack and kayak. You are talented people! If I can come up with a suggested name for the kayak, it's natural to call it Kojak. Hmmm I wonder why that name came up Good luck with the test drive.
Wow, that baby is longggg, but great looking - congrats on the new toy 👏🏼 You had just enough photos on IG to keep us guessing about what the new mount was gonna be…Great job on that construction Dave 👍🏼 Always my best to you three 🤗 BTW, nice hair coloring Irene 👌🏼 #CareyOn🐶
Looks great. Nice design. Any plans for a cover to keep it clean and protect it from the sun? Might even help with wind resistance if you can find a tight fitting one.
So far it’s great. Over 1k miles, four mtn passes and some windy days. Don’t even notice much if any difference. Just have to remember I’m higher than before;)
Most states require a flag at least 36" high. See the local Fish and Wildlife boating requirements for kayaks. I suggest a Yakattack Visio II with a track mount. Since it doesn't have a motor you do not have to register it with the county or Fish and Wildlife, but again check, CA has f up laws.
I laugh every time my sister tells the story of a truck with probably 6 kayaks on it started to lose his load on the Mass Turnpike. Thankfully. She wasn't hit, but we always laugh about what the accident report would look like. "Motorist was hit by kayak traveling end over end in the center west-bound lane."
I did notice your use of Loctite. Does the kayak have a drainage hole in the bottom of the hulll somewhere? What happens if you're traveling and there's a huge downpour that fills it up with water and puts your RV off-balance? That was a great installation. No scones?
If you go back to our earliest videos we had an inflatable kayak. It was fine when were staying someplace but you can’t just deflate it, roll it up and put it away. It needs to be thoroughly dried out first. Ours took a long time so we couldn’t just pull over, go for a float, load it up and head on down the road. You know us, itchy feet:)
@@CareyOnVagabond Yup, drying out inflatables can be an issue. I have the drop stitch Sea Eagle SUP and the Kayak. After schlepping a traditional kayak, I won’t go back. Much more convenient for one person to transport and haul down the beach, but they do need to dry out. I only fully pack them away for winter. Otherwise they are partially deflated and laying in my garage. Even there, they don’t fully dry with the summer humidity on Long Island. You would have to lay them in the sun to fully dry them. Love your videos and adventures!
@@SamEagle17 Thanks! I really like the sea eagle and thought about getting it. This beast is bulky but I have always wanted a yak specific for fishing that had high seats and is wide and stable. I may even take a crab pot out on the bow! Thanks for watching!
