I think what they’re actually asking is, “Have you worked here long enough to know the answer to most questions that I might ask you about the store?“ but, “Do you work here?“ is shorter, and you’ll probably get the answer to the longer question.

I've been working in retail doing both stocking, cart pushing, and now maintenance. I also hate it when customers see me walking around either stocking shelves or sweeping the floors and ask me if I work there. "No, I just like showing up to random establishments and cleaning their floors for no pay"

I once asked a guy where something was in a store, only to realize he wasn't actually an employee and was just some random dude wearing a lanyard and a blue shirt for some unfathomable reason. So I will say that asking if somebody works there is by far the best question, so that way you don't do what I did
