A little shocked at the customer response on this one - expected the standard, “just change the oil.” Glad to see some people do the proper thing to maintain their vehicle.

Yeah but not sure why replacing all four coil packs. You usually just replace the one that is faulty unless these fail quicker on these jeeps.

If one coil is bad, the rest aren’t gonna be far behind. The coils in this video also looked to be from Autozone, which has packs of coils at a discount compared to single coils. If you are gonna end up changing the other 3 in the next 25k miles anyways you might as well have the tech do all of them and save on labor.

The coils for those 2.4 multiair engines are actually quite cheap, 100~150 bucks for a set of 4 from a reputable brand... coming back and having to do this again is more expensive than just doing it all at once. Also the car looks like the owner takes care of the vehicle... so no actual surprise there.
@Grantidge69
@Grantidge69 2 года назад
If the car was on, say, 20k miles, then yes, I would agree. But at 75k on the factory coils, they're likely all reaching the end of their service life anyway, so where one has failed, the others will surely follow. Better to do it all in one hit. Better for the service history, better for the engine, better too for the customer so they only have to make the one visit to the shop.

I don't necessarily think the mechanic is 100% at fault. There's a lot of shady shops who's policies are just trying to upsell anything and everything to make a dollar even if the service isn't needed at the time. Edit: But I agree we need more, and only a few bad apples can ruin the bunch.

They probably aren't soon to die in reality. Coils should last for the life of the engine, it's generally random that one fails. Even honest shops are bending people over on plugs and coils. They are so easy to replace with a couple tools. For the price of one of these shop repairs you can acquire all the necessary tools, parts, a steak dinner, and a trip to an event of your choice. And the tools can be used more than once, on more than one car.

Good on this vehicle owner to replace not only plugs, and bad coil, but being smart enough to replace all the coils! I pretty much have the same thought process on similar type components: if one fails and all are the same age, it's highly likely any other of the same age could fail in the relatively near future, so an ounce of preventative maintenance at this point eventually saves time, money, and hassle. One trick i learned to install spark plugs when power tools are not available is to slide a piece of 6-8 inch long of 1/8 or 1/4 diameter rubber coolant hose over the end of the spark plug. Thread the plugs in by turning the hose until the hose start slipping and no longer gripping the end of the plug. After that, you are pretty much 1-2 turns till it bottoms for final torque. The hose also makes it easier on your wrist and faster to turn as there is way less mass compared to a socket+extension.

@blogger1947
@blogger1947 2 года назад
How did garages ever stay in business before inventing the "scheduled maintainence" scam? One coil fails, intermittently at that, and the shop inflates the repair into several hundred dollars worth of parts replacing. This is the kind of bullshit that results in what someone tried with me last year: starting battery goes dead, due to age and underuse. Repair shop "service writer" inflates that into an estimate for $4,200 worth of "scheduled" work, managing to overlook the really obvious--2 quarts low on oil, dry rotted tires, and a pitted brake rotor that they had been ignoring for several years. And this was my "trusted indie" shop I've been using for 20 years. When I balked at the repair list, offered to buy the truck for $1,000 (less the $200 for the battery.) A different indie shop, did all NECESSARY work for $2k, which included a total brake job and 4 new tires. The difference? My formerly trustworthy guy had hired a front office manager, and was sinking money into repair of his building. He also dismissed my questions by volunteering that 21% of their customer base changes every year, and so what? When I left an appropriate account of the situation on Yelp, my "friend," the owner, called me literally in tears over the negative review. Bottom line is that even a supposedly honest shop can go over to The Dark Side. Yet these guys (who waste valuable shop time making RU-vid videos, complain about DIY repairs, and customers who seek second opinions on estimates.

I guess experience suggest an expected life of the part verses and early failure. 75K miles should be on the early failure side but I don't know jeeps. If it was a Honda, I would of just replaced the one at 75K and if it had happened at 150K miles, replaced all of them.
@dpwellman
@dpwellman 2 года назад
@@blogger1947 Yeah. Service managers make a difference. I had a trusted shop who had bailed me out of a jam caused by work at a national chain (whose parent company I worked). And done nothing but stellar work even opening on weekend for me. I went back recently. Different service manager. Proceeded to botch a suspension job to the tune of $750 literally down the tubes.
@blogger1947
@blogger1947 2 года назад
@@dpwellman When a small shop that was always owner operated hires a "service manager," something has to pay that guy's salary. Even if he doesn't make a commission off the work done, the shop has to find a way to generate the extra $50K or more required to pay the guy. Oddly enough, if there's a female employee in the front office operating as a cashier and appointment-taker, the extra cost isn't nearly so high. Much of this seems to be connected with that ASE "certification" that indie shops increasingly seem to see as necessary. Without accusing anyone of deception or fraud, added overhead costs always result in higher costs to the customer. I can't exactly condemn this, especially when a sole operator needs to multiply his efforts, or personally slow down a bit because of age and health. I also recognize that customers like me, who drive older vehicles and fewer miles, aren't always that profitable. But I can take the responsibility to shop around for a capable mechanic whose business model costs me the least for competent work. For example, I know that at my age, I will never want to own a vehicle with a lot of driver assist technology. So I don't need my money to be spent underwriting all the equipment and software needed to run a shop capable of repairing that stuff.

Hunting over here is more of a transmission term…ie…”The transmission is hunting gears.” I drive over one hill on a certain part of my commute and it’s right at the point where the car can’t figure out if it wants 4th or 5th gear, so it “hunts” between the two. Separated by a common language.

You never use copper paste for the threads of the spark plugs? Here in Germany, I pay about 27 euros for 5 litres (quats) of fully synthetic 5W40 engine oil on Amazon or ebay - that's 32 dollars. In the VW workshop, I pay about 28 euros for 1 litre of oil - plus 19% VAT. My car only needs 4 litres of engine oil. An oil filter from MANN - Hummel costs 8 Euros, or 32 Euros in the workshop. Similar is the pricing with ignition coils - or ignition cables on older cars. 1 working hour costs about 130 Euros - plus 19% VAT. When I have my BMW connected to the diagnostic device here in a BMW workshop, a charger is connected to the battery beforehand. And the big rip-off begins. In the end, the bill is 300 euros ONLY FOR THE DIAGNOSIS. I can understand very well that many customers only have the one defective ignition coil replaced - and also say they don't want the spark plugs replaced while the car is still running. You have to consider that many people here get just 1,800 euros net wage (and even less!) for a full-time job. However - this is the difference to the US, every worker, every employee in Germany has health insurance. Without exception. I'm not sure what the income situation is in the US. But that might explain why many customers only want the most necessary work done.

Nice that they chose to do all coils and plugs. Car has 75k it's certainly close enough to 100k to be replaced. I've seen usually misfires tend to develop before 100k anyways. With this type of coil on plug ignition at minimum it's good to do plugs and the coil boots if no coils have failed. With Fords it's usually a boot problem just from them being around the engine heat and they degrade over time allowing spark to arc to the head. If the plug gap is too wide it adds resistance allowing the spark to leak out of the boot more easily.
