I always hated working on collision-damaged cars. There is always the risk of significant STORED energy in places where you would not expect it. Disassembly of such a car for repairs can be very dangerous. A frame member doesn't have to be called a spring to ACT like a spring! Much respect to the good folks still in the trenches daily doing this work. Be careful under there, Ray.

@@tiles3458 Same mechanism that makes the hot/cold hail dent removal trick only work sometimes: any given bent part might only be in the shape it is due to other forces holding it there. If the force didn’t get past the plastic deformation limit and you relieve those forces by disconnecting the opposing piece, a whole tie rod or subframe component or whatever might let go and jump at you as abruptly as certain hail dents pop out with the canned air!

There's been many times where I diagnose a car and tell the customer what's wrong with it and they take it somewhere else to get it fixed. This is why I never do diagnosis for free. The opening joke about loc tite and the impact on the drain plug reminded me of this from about 25 years ago. My sister asked me to change the oil on her friends car. No problem, even with picking up and dropping off the car it should take under an hour. Get car up on ramps and try and remove drain plug and discover previous oil changer had damaged the threads and used some sort of epoxy to reinstall the plug. Wound up cracking the oil pan before plug came out and it's the only time in my life a welder was a required tool for an oil change.

I'm not a car person. I have no interest in being a mechanic. I couldn't tell you a steering knuckle from a trailer hitch. But this video got recommended to me and I can't stop watching. Why is it so mesmerizing? It's like a camp fire. Thoros: "Look into the -flames- RU-vid video, Clegane. What do you see?" Clegane: -"Logs burning.- Pixels." "Keep looking. What do you see?" "Oil. Oil and bolts. A wrench. Hands ...fixing... a ...Rubusu..." Anyway, I got side tracked there. When did cars start using silicon instead of gaskets? The only time I did work on a car was 20 years ago when my pops had me help him change the valve cover gaskets on the 350 that was in my first car, a 76 Chevy caprice family heirloom. So I actually do know a gasket from a trailer hitch. I just would have expected a gasket for the oil pan instead of that goopy silicone. It reminds me of the thermal compound is geeks put on a computer processor before adding a heat sink or cooler. If you put too much, it can squeeze out and get everywhere. How do you know that silicone isn't squeezing out into the pan where the oil is?

I worked in papermill for a few years at early 2000s. Someone had a bright idea to use some kind of gasket sealant as thread locker, because that was the first thing he found. The bolts ,which he had used it, were for securing vacuum rollers to the paper machine. Those bolts were stuck so hard, that we had to brake them all. And there were a lot of them. After we got the roller out, all of the bolts had to be drilled out and rethreaded for new bolts. That was a huge and expensive job because of some jerk doing something stupid. I like your content Ray, keep up the good work you're doing.👏

If ever the owner of this vehicle ever sees this comment: please take more pride in your work! Tighten every nut you take off, replace parts that you over tighten and strip and for the love of god make sure the parts are seated properly! That steering wheel column not being seated properly is an absolute death wish. Its not just your safety thats in jeopardy when things go wrong on your car. Everyone on the road (and even sidewalks) is at risk when you drive a vehicle with issues like that.

I second Lucas on the right angle tool. I dont have the impact but have the normal milwaukee M12 version and it is the best for getting into tight spots and saves the joint pain with the wrists. Only thing that could top the machine is one with a swallow head and sockets to get into tighter spots

I spent 6 years working as an aircraft mechanic, with 95% of my work being on piston powered airplanes, with engines ranging from a Rotax 912, 2.0L turbo-diesel, 240 cu. in. flat four, all the way to 540 cu. in. turbo-ed six bangers. Occasional PT-6 turbine thrown in there. One thing about doing that, is if you don't do your job right you will kill people as there is no pulling over if shit really hits the fan, but on the other hand, you never (99.99%) had to worry about any jerry-rigging bullshit or iffy customer supplied parts.

Lol it's easy. I'd do this all day long. Except you pay everyone like a kid starting at McDonald's... crap they probably make more to pick their nose on burgers and wank off in the back. You want good workers, pony up. Of flag time plus commission sounds good unless you second guess every freaking diagnosis and let your service writers run roughshod over the mechanics. So yeah, Mr. Cooper, you're like the hundreds of thousands of other crap shops that don't back the mechanics and are all about the unethical "sales."
