The right thing for that mechanic is to assist the customer by calling a tow truck for them so that the car can be safety towed away, and if the customer refuses, the shop can call the cops on their a$$ as it's illegal and can pose a hazard to other road users, including the driver themselves, who clearly doesn't value their own life.
In all seriousness, most drivers/car owners know next to nothing about their vehicle. It is beyond maddening that these people have any say in what services they will or won't do. In some states, you can call the DOT and report a vehicle as unsafe.
Yep while i didn't do my own work usually (with exceptions for oil changes and filter changes) i take it in when i notice something. Only thing I'm currently waiting on is front struts and that's just waiting for the next two paychecks.
In the UK, you can't decline to have major faults fixed. Every year (after 3 years) you have to have a MOT inspection of roadworthiness, and all these faults would fail this and the car wouldn't be allowed back on the road, legally the mechanic has to stop you.
Sadly, it's inspections required after 2 years, every year. Too many states, like mine in TX, are removing safety inspection requirements. They still charge for the inspection, and still have to do emissions tests.
MOT test in the UK starts 3 years after purchase from new and then every year afterwards. Your vehicle is on a database so if your car has not got a valid MOT certificate, road tax and insurance then, if you get caught, your car gets crushed.
Some US states have annual vehicle inspections. Ours does not because Alabama CONSIDERS IT a "tax on the poor". Having a car is a privilege, not a right. You PAY for privileges.
In the US, they legally can't stop a person from leaving. Holding the car is theft, holding the person is wrongfully imprisonment. That said, most shops make them sign a waiver and call the cops to have them waiting as they pull out of the lot

When you spend $40 to $60,000 for a car, why change the oil ? Because dumb dumb your car wont be worth scrap if you don't change your oil regularly. Aduh......😊
If you have an issue that arises right after the vehicle goes out of warranty, contact the MANUFACTURER, not the dealer. Sometimes they will at least go 50/50 on the repair.
I believe that it should be mandatory that all mechanics must have the state police on speed dial and if a customer refuses repairs and drives a provable unsafe vehicle, the state police should arrest the driver on the spot!
The horrors you see on this channel would make excellent evidence in your favour. In the UK you have mandatory yearly inspection. I find it amazing that some US states do not have any kind of mandatory inspection. I see some amazing antics with people dragging a car out of a field, freeing off the engine, getting some semblance of braking and driving it home hundreds of miles entirely legally. There seems to be an appalling lack of trust in the integrity of the people in s car workshop. A belief that they are out to up-sell & rip you off at any opportunity. Then you have those who seem to have less mechanical knowledge than a hamster. It reminds me that you can fix ignorance with education. This channel never fails to have me shaking my head and thinking WTF! Then I am glad I don't live in the same country because you cannot impound some of these death-traps.
I once didn't know my car was even overheating at all. Turns out the previous owner flipped the thermostat around and sealed it with silicone to hide a water pump leak. Drove it for almost 3 months that way. Surprised it didn't lock up on me.

Hi guys am a bit confused as the bloke sounds Aussi but most of the videos are US cars. Here in Aus in NSW you have to get your car checked for Rego every Year and if you don't pass you don't drive it home unless it's a miner repair. You Guys need to update . Regards Terry
once i had pass side carpet soaked with antifreeze.turned out the hose clamp under the hood wasnt tight enough,the small drops ran down the tube inside & dripped down the heater box onto the carpet.i tested heater core with bicycle tube & it flowed great & didnt leak a drop.made sure clamps were tight during reassembly.took days to get carpet cleaned.

it should be required to know basic car maintenance intervals (when to get an oil change, tires rotated, etc) in order to get a license cos this shit is NOT that hard

Don't worry, even for first owners or CPO they will find *SOME* excuse to dodge out from under the warranty. They always do, as sure as the sun will cross the sky.

Ok, time for some perspective: there are 282 million cars on the road in the US. Im a mechanic, you see these once or twice a month out of 100+ where they refuse to have repairs done on things that jeopardize the safety of the vehicle. I I don't think I worked in a shop where there hasn't been the brake rotor worndown to a saw blade hanging on the wall. And im a California mechanic, we cant stop them from leaving. And yes police do get called sometimes, i really dont know how effective that is. However , the vast majority of people figure out a way to pay for the repairs. In the Northeast States where cars rot out, I'm sure those guys see a lot more "Customer declines service" And they have the inspections to control that. The US is a wild place and im glad we can provide entertainment (I'm lookin at you Florida)🤗😁
My 2005 Subaru Baja Turbo is being rebuilt. Heads, rods, bearings, gaskets, oil pump, et al. But, yeah, if they are not 100% maintenanced from day 1, they are just a nightmare.
seeing these suspension, subframe and engine knock issues and knowing Americans have an 85 MPH speed limit on their highways is actually scary af. I know preventative maintenance isnt thought everywhere but for the love of God, you'd think the magically powered toaster oven you drive would at least require some level of care. I weep.
It's not a matter of thinking it's safe. A heck of a lot of people simply don't have ANY cash on hand or means to come up with a couple thousand dollars for repairs. They drive it or they lose their jobs and then their housing.
And if they're lucky, their death trap doesn't come apart while doing 80. It's a hell of a gamble with other peoples lives. Some of this is due to people driving cars they can't afford; people rarely think about maintenance costs when considering if a vehicle is feasible. Don't buy a jeep when you can buy a Toyota or Honda, and avoid most of these new cars like the plague.
Just get an older Toyota and change the fluids regularly. Can easily get over 300,000 if you fix sh!t when it needs to be fixed. Maintenance is cheap, engines are not.

in the US you always have to buy a new car because people, either wait too long between oil changes or do not change oil at all. 5k is too much for an oil change and now they even follow the manufacturer recommendation that is even longer than that. 8k or 10k is insane.
Want to check your numbers? 6months/10000kms(6k miles) is what I use and have for 40+years. Most mfg have run 12months/15k kms for over 20 years now without issue for "light/average' conditions and 6 mth/10k kms for "adverse". (Read constant rush hour driving for adverse conditions) I do agree that some of the newer "long life service" intervals are extreme.
painting with a pretty broad brush there. are there some that don't take care of their cars? sure. but many, and i mean many more do. take my '01' silverado for instance. came off the line in july 2000. still runs as good as new, even after 24 years as a very hard worked truck. i can't imagine it getting less than 400k on the original drive train.
5000 miles is definitely not too much unless of course You only do very short trips Only and never drive in a straight line for over 10 miles at least hitting 65 mph, I prefer 75 and 600 miles +, Some of us drive 40,000 miles per year, I do about 20,000 each on two Vehicles, And 15,000 on a therd, Between two drivers.
I agree. Used cars are like a box of chocolates - you never know what you are going to get. Even if they have records of maintenance, they could be lying or they could have been lied to. And used cars are so expensive these days. I can afford new and my next will likely be new again (my previous two vehicles lasting 33 years so far).
