sry about my english and for not knowing the correct terms in it. What heppens is that the gear it self is what makes the oil go to the places that it needs to be. When in neutral with no engine power, the gears are stoped in the gearbox ( no oil flow), just it center( synchronizerand and shaft parts ---- in a free style translation lol, dont know if the name are the "same"---- ) would move not being lubricated. Its problaby ok to do so, but i wouldn't recomend go on a highway like that. ( as i would not recomend put the car in neutral to save gas on a long hill ) there is no such a thing as a engine pumping oil to the transmission by a pump ( it would spin the gears on the gearbox and therefore creatthe oil flow) , when u say things like that, people can think that are scamed, i can understend why the client felt like that . The bus that he showed the photo was problably in gear and in that case you would for shure lose a motor, dont know about the fire though....

I've been driving a truck for 5 years. Had my license for double that time. Lubrication in a manual transmission occurs when the input shaft spins the cluster. When flat-towing, the engine is not running and the input shaft does not spin. However, the rotating rear wheels will spin the mainshaft, even with the transmission in neutral. This will cause damage to the transmission. It’s not immediate drop out like he mentioned unless you have very low oil or close to none he has no way of knowing how long the truck sat essential your grinding it it more and more the effect being minimal if your lubrication is good. Short distance should be fine but if your going long distance avoid the possible bill fixing and pay the extra it was literally like 2 something rather then paying to fix a truck 😂

They also need to understand that there are several companies out there that will do things just to make an extra dollar. The customer is always right and if he's not you need to calmly explain to him what is necessary and why you have to do it.

lets say he left that driveshaft connected and someday that truck was running and used again and there was a problem with the transmission. Who would the owner or mechanic that has to fix it blame?

Bro it’s sad watching this guy (the customer) act like he knows what’s what, but it’s even more sad watching this heavy tow guy(cdl tow truck operator) act like he knows what’s what…I’m a heavy tow truck operator, and I’ve never heard of a manual truck being towed with the drive tires on the ground catching fire because the driveline was still connected… never… and this isn’t Alaska this is florida… where it’s hot all the time! Hahaha I’m just laughing man this is crazy… none of these people know what their talking about

I know nothing about towing but everything the tower is saying makes absolute sense. MANUAL is the key word 🤦‍♀️. And if they went his way, the dime he was trying to save would become worthless in the loss or cost to fix it.

Actually,he customer is right,in this instance! It is a manual transmission truck; just put it into Neutral and pull! But I do sympathize with the tow truck driver about know-all customers!

I had my truck towed a while ago, the operator just couldn't wrap his mind around the fact that between the locking hubs and the manual transfer case the 4x4 wouldn't be an issue 😅 but he was a big city wrecker driver and not used to old trucks

The only thing is though if you're going to drop a drive shaft, mark both ends of the drive shaft so that when you reinstall it, you lined up exactly how it came off to keep it balanced.

The tow driver says pump will not be pumping, but I heard one of them say it was a manual transmission, well a manual transmission does not have a pump, only automatics do, which will burn up with driveshaft connected. It's OK to pull a manual transmission without removing driveshaft. Put transmission in neutral & go ahead. Tow driver is misinformed.

It's a manual transmission. It works similarly to a rear differential. There is no oil pump. Most just take gear oil. The movement of the gears keep it lubricated. On a long drive I would pull it. Locally short distance, you don't have to on a manual.

I believe it is more of a company policy to not tow manuals in neutral and remove the driveshaft. More of a liability to make sure nothing happens. Should have told the customer that’s how it is and end of story. But arguing with a customer about a fluid pump on an older manual, just makes him look stupid. That old truck had splash lubrication like 98% of manual transmissions out there.

Automatic transmissions had the pump connected to drive shaft in most 60’s, and earlier auto transmissions, how you know? Try pushing vehicle to about 35 mph and drop in drive, if engine turns over (starts)-pump is connect to drive line this type of trans will not burn up because fluid is circulating through trans when vehicle is moving. Manual trans burn up while towing-not probable, this is why towed vehicles should have standard trans.

Watch one teardown video of where an automatic transmission's oil pump is and it will all make sense. It'll also explain why you can't push start a car with an automatic in the same way you can with a manual transmission car. That said, this truck didn't have an automatic, so yeah.
@Mountain_Paladin
@Mountain_Paladin 3 года назад
Gearbox ? Albuquerque, snorkel anyone can throw words out there. If it's a manual transmission you DO NOT REMOVE DRIVELINE. If it's an automatic transmission YOU REMOVE DRIVELINE. a manual can be placed into neutral and be towed without problem . Gears are submerged in gear oil and no pressure is built. An automatic transmission has a pump and a torque converter which can build pressure and pump needs to be flowing to circulate fluid for cooling and lubrication. And if there is a transfer case then it can also (not always) render a safe tow if put into neutral. That's the way it is .
