My name is Bre. I took two years of small engine repair at the local college. When I left school, I fell into a wonderful job at a local small engine shop where I worked the counter for a couple years. In 2010 my husband and I opened up our own small engine shop in central Arkansas where I am able to work alongside my family and best friends. We see over 2,000 pieces of small engine equipment every year, and answer 1,000's of small engine questions. We specialize in brands such as Briggs and Stratton, Kohler, Echo and Shindaiwa, but work everyday on MANY other brands like Stihl, Husqvarna, Honda, Craftsman, Remington, Red Max, Troy Bilt, Scag, Bad Boy, Hustler, World Lawn, Poulan, Mantis, Etc.. Hopefully, my experience I share, will save you Time, Money and Frustration in the future!

Dad was a Snapper dealer for many years. Saw this problem more than once. In the old days, Snapper had their own battery that was sealed to prevent this problem. The Snapper battery cost twice as much as a normal battery. Few people bought the Snapper battery when the original battery failed.

I'm on my second Snapper 28" rear engine rider. It's just like the one in this video. The first one lasted 20 years and the one I have now is about 15 years old. I absolutely love these mowers. I'll have to keep this one going since they've stopped making them again. Easy and inexpensive to work on. I've never had my battery leak like that but I don't leave it in a standing position for more than an hour without removing the battery. I think the manual says 2 hours but I don't won't to chance it. Thanks for posting this video. Always interested in Snapper repair videos.

EVERYTHING I work on, I try metric and imperial on every fastener because tool manufacturer tolerances aren't so great. So it may be intended to be one thing, but have a better fit with the other. Then you switch tool brands and it flips the other way.

I'm so excited! I bought that same mower (except mine's a 30 inch cut), brand new, in the spring of 2007. It has been the toughest, most reliable piece of equipment I have ever owned. It's built like a tank. all the steel is twice as thick as it needs to be, and everything is so simple to get at; grease fittings, battery, drive mechanism, etc.. It's not a zero turn, but I'll take it's brute power and durability over that all day.

When I moved, in 2011, from Seattle to Kentucky and a large lawn, I purchased a used Craftsman 2000, V-Twin Rider mower. I hadn't really done any small engine work but I have an aptitude for it. One cylinder on the engine kept bending pushrods, which would then fall out of the rocker arms. I eventually figured out that the valves were stuck and I had to pound them in with a hammer to reduce pressure and then I would straighten the push rod on an anvil with a hammer as well. And that would get me through a half a yard of mowing before I had to do it again. I got pretty proficient at it. Then one day I'd searched the internet regarding why the valves would get stuck and it said it may be overheating. Well, I took the shroud off the whole engine and a mouse or bird had built a nest right against the engine and all the fins were coated in a solid cake of mud. I cleaned all that out, and it worked great ever since. I did buy some nice new push rods from Amazon so I was starting fresh. That was about 6 years ago and now I have a 60 inch bad boy zero turn and I mow about 9 acres of lawn. Sadly, I'm now paranoid about something building a nest next to my cylinders and actually find myself checking for that every now and then. I have not found anything yet though. I keep it in my shop building when it's not being used, so the risk is probably low. However, I prefer to store it in my barn to give me more room in my shop. But paranoia keeps me from that.

Whenever battery acid gets where it is not supposed to, I use baking soda to neutralize the acid before I clean it up. I even dust the top of batteries where some acid vaper has come out of the vents on the top of the battery. It keeps the acid from ruining cables. It also makes it safer to handle anything that had acid on it.

I bought one of these mowers from Moris Levin in Tulare, California. I used it once per week for 10 years and sold it to a guy who is likely still using it 10 years after that. It's like an inside out mower. Everything is right out in the open and easy to work on. Only thing I had to do was add an in-line fuel shut-off petcock because the needle & seat in the carb would sometimes leak, which would cause gas to leak down into the engine oil.

I'm on my daughter's RU-vid account. If you stand a Snapper RER on end you supposedly can leave the battery in place as long as it isn't for more than two hours. Even when I sharpen the blade on mine, it's back down on all four wheels after I remove the blade.

Sulphuric acid is really hard to dilute enough to not be corrosive. The other posters who mentioned use of baking soda or soda ash to neutralize are making good suggestions, but those springs may give away sooner rather tha later. Time will tell. Good job!

I think the only thing I would do different is change those springs. Since they are relatively cheap, but so little metal for that acid to dissolve, it doesn't hurt to put fresh ones. Especially the very corroded throttle return spring. Otherwise fantastic information on that classic.

I have three of these mowers. Every one of them has a warning right at the front bumper that says remove the battery when lifting on its end for an extended period of time. I’ve always hated the warning from the sign. Now I will hear the warning from what this video represents! Wow
