I like the way the Officers handled this person. They deescalated the situation by being calm and respectful.

The saddest thing of this situation is that she was used only as carrier by the drug dealers, probably offering money or threatening her of killing her family if she refused or takled. That's at leats the way carteles operate in Mexico and hundreds of innocent people end up in jail for doing something they could not refuse.

Poor people are always arrested, but the real smugglers are still living freely everywehre

Man... I felt sad for her. She's lucky the judge gave her a break.. considering shes 23 and was given 7 years, she'll be out when she's 30. Perfect time for her to pick up her life in a responsible way and make a way for herself.

I've seen comments saying, effectively, "I've been so poor all I had to eat was dirt and wee wee, but I never once resorted to selling drugs." That's fair enough (except for the dirt and wee wee) but it doesn't tell the whole story of these people. Some who do it aren't just responsible for feeding and clothing themselves, they have families. Beyond that and often more critically, the decision is one that is made for them, by people who threaten to harm their children.

The dealers send more than one mule. Then tip off security on a few mules so the mules with the biggest haul can get through. That's how they ensure their product will make it. They sacrifice a little to gain a lot. She was set up.

This really broke my heart. Not saying she’s innocent but I’ve seen the poverty and lack of opportunities in Jamaica that probably pushed her to do this.

It is sad. I work for a mental health/substance use recovery facility, and the most devastating thing is when someone works hard for months to get into the maintenance level of recovery, and then we see them back in two years because they relapsed, and they feel like the biggest failure. Addiction is an awful thing. Getting into the business of selling drugs is an awful thing, and a lot of our clients who were former sellers did it because they felt like they had no other way out of their rut, and they were good at it. It’s all devastating.

Her dutty man made her do it. Poor thing. Now the man moved on with his life with another woman while she's doing 7 years, smh.

I live in Jamaica and the poverty here is outrageous. She probably has kids and really didn’t want to do this but she felt like she had too. Look at her, what 23 year old dresses like that? There is more to her story. Have some compassion, trust me. The struggle for most Jamaicans is real. What she did was wrong yes, but I my heart goes out to her.

I feel very sorry for her . She was undoubtedly coerced into doing this my her male partner 7 years and a ruined life When she comes out I hope she can keep well away from the people who got her into that mess

This woman is only 23. We have no idea of her baground situation. Children, family, poverty... drug cartels may have forced her, threatened the lives of her, but also her loved ones, we don’t know. But whatever anyone says, it must take desperation to risk doing something like this. With the advent of the ‘net p, almost EVERYONE has an idea (or can easily find out) what the consequences are likely to be. Meanwhile, recently in the uk I saw a documentary about paedophiles. Many had downloaded half a MILLION or more illegal, sick subhuman images and videos. They got token prison terms, and help to ‘rehabilitate’. People meanwhile in almost every household drink alcohol, very often to excess, which kills and harms FAR more people per year, and costs the taxpayer a fortune. They smoke tobacco, for which the same applies, but also harms and causes cancer in those around them: children, the elderly and vulnerable, etc. Yet these pastimes are perfectly legal, and a lovely tax revenue stream for the government. SOMETHING ISNT RIGHT FOLKS.

I don't think it's bad for a person to feel sorry for her and feel empathy because she's actually acting very distraught, she's defeated. You can tell that she was made to do this by cowards who use people who have nothing, and would do anything. Compared to other people on here she's actually showing signs of regret.

Sometimes people trick you into smuggling. When you are on vacation, they want to help you pack your suitcase. Sometimes they offer to buy you a plane ticket and when you are there, they send a friend to meet you and give you a package to bring back to them or their family members. This woman is a mule but there have been cases when people have been tricked into becoming drug mules. My mother told not to accept packages from anyone (Or if you are too polite to refuse throw it AWAY or leave it behind) and dont allow them to help you pack your suitcase. Pack your suitcase yourself and keep it locked at all times. Before you leave search your suitcase.

This comment is not really about the story rather about the authorities. Even though the story is very sad, I couldn't help but to notice the treatment this lady received. It amazed me that in the U.K. the law enforcement treated people, particularly minorities humanely and with dignity. I applaud them for the compassion-- mainly the female officer! Not usually the case in the U.S.
