Should the UK cut benefits to get people back to work?
The IMF has suggested slashing unemployment benefits would encourage men in particular to find jobs.
It comes amid a so-called 'worklessness crisis' in Britain with over 9 million working-age adults out of work.
Mel Stride, the Work and Pensions secretary, has already acknowledged the need for radical welfare reforms.
Last month he unveiled plans to make 150,000 people signed off work with mild mental health problems look for jobs, warning that “normal ups and downs of human life” risked being labelled as a medical condition.

The best incentive to work is to provide for yourself and your family, what better incentive than that FGS. Why on earth do you think so many eastern Europeans have come over to the UK in the last 15 years ? Why do you think a hundred thousand people have risked their lives on a rubber dinghy to get to the UK if we are such a poor paying country ? Get employers to keep people who are sick on! That is the main problem. Many people get sick and want to keep working but their long term illness or disability means that they can no longer work how a fully healthy person would. They might just require a level of flexibility that employers are unwilling to deal with! Also the transport system in this country sometimes means that disabled and chronically ill people can’t even get to work! Many of these problems could be dealt with if the country were willing to take measures to assist people into employment (they don’t even like people to work from home!) but the entire system is set up to PUNISH the sick and disabled instead. Even the excessively long NHS waiting lists is affecting how many people have to give up work due to illness. Sometimes the longer a person waits to receive treatment affects the long term progression of an illness. Sometimes a quick outcome from surgery could put an end to their misery but because they have to wait the pain increases leading to more damage.

Benefits were actually in danger of taking over wages not because benefits are too high. No it’s because wages have been kept to low for too long. The new minimum wage is still not high enough to live off. To survive independently and be able to afford all the bills the minimum wage needs to be no less than £35,000 per year. People simply can’t afford to come of benefits to work full time on minimum wage then not have enough money left to pay the high cost of rent and Council Tax. Governments have caused this issue therefore they need to address this. Not through punishment but by introducing fairness and understanding of what life is like for people at the bottom.

Tories and the rich love to pretend everyone can work, but refuse to accept most employers don't want anyone they might have to make some minor adjustments to hire, or someone who might cost them a little bit of investment. Much easier to just keep pushing the bullshit that everyone's lazy.

If you could highlight a particular social system that contributes greatly to a country’s demise financially, it’s the benefit system. It is way too generous, and the criteria necessary to receive pips and other health related benefits are now so wide that we have encouraged this way of life. I have several family members who rake in over £25k a year.
@jondoe5532

do you have a breakdown of what benefits they get that adds up to 25k a year ?
@galaxianx01
@galaxianx01 Месяц назад
@@jondoe5532 here we go: Im referring to a couple here btw. Their own UC is about £600 a month. One receives a PIP of about £470 (for something i cannot see) They have 2 children both of which get attendance allowance equal to another 600 a month. Add to that child allowance of another £150 They live in a 3 bedroom house which the council charges £590 a month and they receive 80% housing benefit. Why would you ever want to work? I think one person would need a salary of over £30k to take home the same amount. And note: i know them. Except for one of the children, there is nothing wrong with them. Both lazy so and so’s who smoke all day long, and laughably moan constantly of being bored.
