30:52 Chefs who make fugu are trained for 4 to 6 years by a trained fugu chef on just that one fish to make sure they know what they are doing and can prepare it correctly. then they have to pass an exam to make sure that they can make it properly then and only then can they potentially get the licenses and documents needed to allow them to prepare fugu in their restaurant.

A lot of creatures that are stereotypically "pure herbivores" are not pure herbivores when in extreme circumstances. Like deer will go after meat in the winter because there isn't much grazing to go around. Same with hummingbirds: hummingbirds are known to switch to insects in the winter due to nectar sources being unavailable while insects will still be available, just hard to get because they're also wintering. And when your average metabolism on the move is 5 minutes before you starve to death, "hard to get" is good enough. Edit: About the pufferfish cooking: the chefs have to go through a RIDICULOUS amount of training to get to the point where they're allowed to prepare that (it's called Fugu) and even after the 3 years required to take the exam, some 70% of chefs still fail, meaning only 30% of chefs who put in that effort ever get certified. It's also illegal for certain government officials (such as the Emperor of Japan) to eat Fugu because of the risk of it being prepared incorrectly (this has been compared to the laws against the President of the United States being able to drive on public roads; it's an unnecessary risk, so this risk was mitigated.) There are 17 restaurants in the States that DO serve Fugu, despite it being heavily cautioned by the FDA (this was spearheaded by a Japanese restaurant owner who wanted to serve Fugu in the States and spent 5 years arguing with the FDA over it.) 14 are in my home state of New York, and 12 of them are, of course, in New York City, where they have the money to spend on that kind of shit. And yes, the same standards that are required in China, Korea and Japan (the 3 year apprenticeship and exam is pretty standarized across them) are also required here for those 17 restaurants.

6:00 the interesting thing is that there really arent any "rules" in nature in terms of what you can and cannot eat. It's easier to think of diets as more of a spectrum rather than the usual black and white representation of herbivores and carnivores. So technically, everything's an omnivore to some degree. It just depends on where your niche is and where you fit on that spectrum. Sorry, I kinda rambled but I just find that stuff really interesting.

I'm by no means a scientist or animal expert so I could be wrong but I do believe that deer are herbivorous. It's just that most herbivores are also opportunists who will eat meat, if put into a position where they have no other choice.

It's exceptionally rare for an animal to be exclusively carnivorous or herbivorous. Bears (save the polar and panda varieties) are technically omnivores, same with deer. Cats are one of the very few animals to be true carnivores, and true herbivores are usually not the fastest or smartest animals. Koalas, sloths, and pandas come to mind. (Also not a biologist, so if I am wrong, please correct me)

@@willemthijssen1082 Pandas aren't true herbivores since only 99% of their diet is bamboo. The other 1% is anything else. They have been known to eat eggs and other animals. There are even photos and possibly videos of them killing and eating Peafowl (Yes, it's Peafowl. Peacock is the name for the males). Polar Bears are also not true carnivores since they can eat plants, fruits, and vegetables, especially in captivity. Most herbivores like deer and cows only eat other animals when they're not getting enough calcium or phosphorus. Basically, herbivores only eat meat when they're desperate. When it comes to true carnivores, you'd have to look at sharks like the Great White, crocodilians, and cats.

What Nate was describing about squirrels and deers eating birds are called opportunistic carnivores. There are certain nutrients present in meat that isn’t in plants, so it’s not too uncommon to see herbivores eat off of carcasses or eat smaller prey when needed. True herbivores are very rare in comparison, and typically that’s a bad thing for the animals in question. koalas pretty much can only eat eucalyptus which is poisonous, and pandas basically have such Low energy due to bamboos poor nutritional value.
