Devil Went Down to Edom | The Weird Bible Podcast: Episode 5

In the Book of Job, the Devil went down to Edom, he was looking for a soul to steal...from God. Often cited as a story of God's cruelty and indifference, Job is, in reality, far more complex than that. Possibly a compilation of an old Jewish story and later Greek influenced philosophical dialogue, the book details the trials of the most righteous man of the day, the wealthy and successful Job. Satan is invited to tempt God's greatest servant, only to fail in breaking his faith. Aidan and Isaiah go deep into how this story of loss is really the story of salvation and growth in character.

This video helped restore some of my faith in Christ. I'm still thinking about if or when to fully return, but I left ever since my grandfather died, but to think it was "God calling him home"... I remember that I was told by the parents of a friend of mine that they were uncertain that he would go to Heaven because he was a Protestant instead of a Catholic, and that's what turned me away. I was upset at them, because I was thinking "How could God turn him away because of a few differences in worship?" I was also upset at God, for he took my grandfather away just when he was starting to seem like he was feeling better, but this helped me understand a little better. Like I said, I'm not sure if I will come back to the fold fully, but this video helped quite a bit.

So proud for you about it 🥺 I've heard from the bible (some people too, like other youtubers) that when we're hurting or confused that's when we should hold onto bible God and his words the most, because that stability is the most trustworthy one since it doesn't die, gets hurt, or makes you think twice on it Apparently, that's what they've been through and I wanna believe people's supposed experiences y'know? Plus it does feel like it certainly has helped me keep my sanity even through a lot of pains in the past too lol..

This has helped to be the kick in the butt I needed to go back to being the spiritual leader in my household. And I also ask that you pray for me. Isaiah has a similar attitude about Job that I have about Abraham's sacrifice of Issac. I was an atheist with a mild interest in theology and history before, but when I truly came to understand the depth of devotion and harrowing sorrow in which Abraham was in on the mountain, I became a believer. I doubt others would come to the understanding I did, yet it made the entire purpose of Christ's sacrifice so clear to me. If there is any path to salvation for the cynical atheist I used to be was to truly understand the meaning of sacrifice first and everything else erupts from that understanding.

It's always nice to see people tackle the harder topics in the Bible. It seems a lot of people outside christian circles think Christians are too naive or stupid to think of these things... The book of Job is by far my favorite in the Bible so I don’t say this to handwave away all the great writings in it, but I do believe that it is not based on true events. That being said, people will still read great fiction like 1984, To Kill a Mocking Bird, etc and teach entire lectures on it, yet the second a single part of the Bible is a metaphor or not a true event it gets thrown out the window and laughed at. The messages that this story conveys are so deep and profound it is truly life changing. Some of the discourse between Job and his friends could be discussed in entire series of philosophical writings. To cap it all off, people often call Job’s wife and friends bad people, but they are supposed to represent how normal people would react in this situation. It is a layer of deep irony that when looking in a mirror we hate what we see. Such a wonderful and spiritual book and I’m excited to hear your guys’ thoughts!

These conversations are really helping me see the rationale and belief system of Christianity because nothing really made sense to me growing up and my family likes to think of god as “the big man in the sky”. I consider myself agnostic these days, but I always love hearing the ideology of Christ because it helps me better understand those around me. My first job was at a rehab clinic and the 12 steps is pretty much entirely based around God and how through grace and forgiveness you can heal, and even though I listened and went to meetings with patients, I could never truly understand that point of view. I hope that gaining a more philosophical sense of the Bible can give me the confidence to use scripture as a positive tool while talking with those struggling and battling their own demons. This passage of job is really clicking with me, because I’ve seen people at their lowest and heard about the trauma that they’ve been through, but have never really been able to give them a sense of security that “god sees you and he knows you and he will help you” but ANYWAY, I cannot express to you guys how much your conversations have guided me more than anyone else in my 26 years of living (be that my own unwillingness to learn or not 😮‍💨) but thanks for showing us how one can use the Bible through tough times 💗💗💗

That being said I would air a word of caution telling Mormons that they're going to heaven because "they're trying to be a good person" is a good interpretation of the Bible. We need one thing to go to heaven and that is the perfect sacrifice of Christ on our behalf to wash away our sins. Salvation is Christ plus nothing. We cannot add one iota to our salvation and if we're depending on being a good person we're doomed before we start.

We may not have prophets, but I do believe god speaks to us in dreams and through others. He gives us knowledge whether or not we need to do anything with it. Sometimes it’s getting us prepared for things like death. Things that we naturally don’t understand and are upsetting because of the finality. It’s just a way to help us in this human form. I remember having more than one dream of sitting in my grandparent’s living room and just talking to them. This is after they both passed within a year of each other. I had a longing to be around them since it had been years. Do that was a nice way of maybe saying goodbye in a way that I didn’t feel like I could before.

Something really important to keep in mind of the book of Job is that it isn't considered nonfiction in Judaism. In my English Jewish Study Bible (because I don't understand Hebrew), the Editors state that Job is a parable from the time of Jews living in Persia. This is most likely why Satan is personified the way they are, because (according to the JSB) Satan as a character (rather than more of a malevolent force inside of humanity) didn't really become prevalent until the Jews of Persia.

When it comes to agnostic or non Christian’s getting into heaven I personally believe god judges then based on how they lived and treated others rather than what they believed in. With so many religions in the world it would take an evil god to condemn them for following the wrong one. I personally believe god is more lenient than we give them credit for. If you’re a genuinely good person who tried their best, I believe there’s a spot in heaven waiting for you.

Which is weird. Every Christian should tell unbelievers or new believers to start with the Gospels, the ENTIRE reason for the Bible, Jesus, and the absolute foundation of every Christian's belief should be rooted in the Gospels, Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John. You can read the Gospels, believe and receive salvation, and never read another page outside of it and be fine eternally. You can't say that about any other part of the Bible, even though the entire Bible has an importance. I think the starting point should be how to be saved, and then from there, how to grow. Because without foundation of salvation, it's all in vain and ignorance. Every Christian should try to read every word of the Bible through, but especially with Old Testament, it's evey easily misconstrued by blinded unbelievers and used as fuel for their ignorance.

Sounds like my british lit teacher is high school, we read the illiad, la morte de arthur, the bagadvaghita(hindu text), and mythologies around the world. Teacher was whole grain and nuts.

I was raised catholic, I was taught that children who die at a very young age go straight to heaven because they are still too young to understand right from wrong, they are purely innocent

I hate that I disagree with them at all on their points about testimony because I can tell they’re so correct on them but there’s also so much I just wanna talk to them about with times where cutting those friends off is the Christian thing to do and when those discussions with people who hate Christianity are just not worth having but isiah is so well spoken and correct about so much I’m angry at myself for wanting to disagree with him about the parts of it I think he’s for lack of a better term naive about. But he’s so knowledgeable and so well spoken about it

Do you mean the concept of "if someone rejects the Word, don't bother trying to force it", because that's very true. We are to FIRST, BE an example of Jesus Christ. That enough lures in more people than preaching the Word itself. When someone asks us why we are the way we are, especially in difficult times or trials, we should have a foundation set up to talk about exactly why we are the way we are. Christ sets us apart so He can set us up. We are meant to be in a season of isolation before our purpose. That very well may include getting rid of family and friends that don't benefit you so that you can benefit others. I really don't have a problem with that, I'm actually a little cold and calculated in that regard. One of the worst things to do is to hold on to people who are still attached to this world and it's desires and allow that spiritual negativity and oppression to attack us second-handedly. We are in agreement with the friends we are with, and the people we associate with..

For the smoking segment I always look back to treating your body like a temple, could be food, substance, thoughts, and whatever is hurting that temple focus towards God should be removed. Hopefully this helps.
