Whenever my dog, Miss Elway, hears me singing the Jaws theme, she starts crying out of fear of the impending shark attack. She's so adorable! At the end of the video, she gets into a play-fight with my cat, Mr. Frodo.
Reminds me of my sheltie. They are very vocal making all kinds of strange noises to express themselves. It's part of what makes them feel almost human at times with the variety of emotions they can display.
It's the low pitch of you voice the dog is reacting to, when you switch to a high pitch the dog gives a positive response. Low pitch is unfreindly, high pitch is friendly.
The Sheltie thinks the owner is growling at him/her with that low tone. I am sure the dog doesn't know what the Jaws theme is or understands why the owner or pack leader is growling. Shelties are very emotional dogs and it is cruel to tease them that way. I know I had a Sheltie.
"pack leader" yeah i'm not listening to anything you have to say about dogs, thanks. also did you miss the comment that said they trained the dog to do this? chill out. i've had shelties my whole life (5 shelties, 3 currently), and while they are very sensitive, you can train them to vocally react to certain stimuli pretty easily as they are very intelligent dogs.
I had a Sheltie that we lost last year. I have always had dogs, but he was my favorite and I miss that dog so much! I love watching these videos. They bring back the memories. I want another, but they are hard to find!
Obviously, the vocal tones built anxiety. You are the one relating the tones to a film. The dog responds to her owner's voice. Laughing at the dog after it shows "fear" does nothing to relieve the stress. The dog is chewing the bed to relieve stress, then responds to the cat accordingly. You as the owner, should do everything you can to build confidence and security for your dog. You are the center of its world. If certain tones bother the dog, avoid them. It is not humorous to make a dog anxious. Maintain trust.
Excellent analysis. I had a Sheltie for 8 years before she died at age 14, and when she showed signs of stress I would immediately try to remove the source or comfort her. This owner is just mean.
There is a big difference. That growling is not a sign of enjoyment. Also, if your dog got "anxious" when being asked to go for a walk, it means he would not want to go. I believe you are confusing anxiety with excitement.
I love how upset and fucked up everyone is about this. If you’ve ever owned a collie or a sheltie, you know that as loving and sweet as they are, they can sometimes have really hilarious personalities. I had a collie that was fearless in the sight of wild animals and other dangers, but was also terrified of bubbles. If you can’t laugh at things like that, then I feel sorry for you.
Oh wow! I used to have a Sheltie that looked exactly like that - AND a cat that looked almost exactly like your cat too! And they played just like that together! I feel like I was watching my own! Thanks for the hilarious video!
My sheltie does the same, she LOVES to nibble on things, even my socks... Actually, when I was about ten years old she put her love of nibbling in stuff to use, herself. We would always play around as if I were a dog, and we even play fight like dogs, well, one time she actually bit me without meaning to, because she was used to playing with dogs, she saw that it hurt me, and ever since she just nibbles, its so cute! I love her so much! Shelties are by far the best breed around! :D
I trained her to do this. ;) She was an extremely intelligent dog. We also taught her to do "a little to the left." She would start in a sitting position and we would give her the command. She would stand up, move to her left, and sit back down. Completely useless but awesome. :)
They are a very sensitive breed. don’t be surprised if your dog snaps at you next time because you fully deserve it . It is not in the slightest bit funny

im sure if i did the same thing to my sheltie he'd make these weird ass yawning noises he makes sometimes. that's how he expresses himself when he's not barking his head off lol.
Shelties are too sensitive to tease in this way! I can see the dog is irritated and you can hear her growl. I hope you realize this can be a real problem for you later because she will not trust you completely! I truly do not understand people like you!
Hi! I'm thinking of getting a Sheltie next year. I have done extensive research and it will be my first dog. Any tips? I noticed this dog did not like that at all, growling, looking away and yawning. I know they are sensetive dogs, do you think it's down to the amount of socialization. What things do these dogs not like?
Oh this is painful to watch. My Sheltie used to to that nervous biting thing too. Maybe that's what they do instead of tearing us to pieces hehe. I see a lot of my old dog in this one. The house is soooo empty with her gone.
my god I freaking love Shelties...I have one named Belle and she seems to be the exact opposite of Elway for intelligence...where your dog is smart but scared of the Jaws theme, my dog is not that smart sadly(I tried to train her but she would never listen...hours each day for hardly anything) and scared of her own shadow(literally I am not exagerating, she once saw her shadow, stared at it then ran off in fear)
This is the way so many used to be. Did you raise her as a puppy.? This was so common years ago and it has pretty much been bred out of them by now. This is why they recommend no teasing because they are so smart they think it's serious. There is a """smart" Calendar on the internet and Shelties come in at either 4th,or 6th usually. I don't get it,but number 87 is the Afghan Hound with the long beautiful hair. Dumb as a box of rocks I guess?
She is a beautiful dog and I am sorry that you lost her. Katie, my sheltie, just died 3 days ago and it has broken my heart 'cause I had her for 13 years. She was a part of me. Miss Elway looks very much like how Katie looked and she was also very smart. Shetland Sheepdogs are the best dogs.
Aww haha! Poor thing!! I have a Sheltie but she never does this. Haha but she does bite the bed, all the time! And the cat likes to attack our Sheltie too... :D
beware of the contemptuous cat glaring at that poor the sheltie. my sheltie doesnt find the jaws theme at all scary, but i can only guess that's because he's only seen JAWS 3D and not the original. as a result even the mention of that big dumb mechanical shark makes my sheltie laugh.
My dog is just like this. She gets angry when I whisper in her ear or pretend to make fly noises while moving my finger toward her. She makes the exact same noise at 0:56 - 1:16
