Great unboxing video! A word of caution- the blade can drop while holding the scales, don’t chop your fingers.

Enjoy! Take your time and be patient. I was in this hobby for a decade before I started straight razor shaving. It takes about 50 shaves to get comfortable and 100 until it becomes muscle memory. Have your styptic pencil ready because you will cut yourself.

As a straight razor shaver I must say that is a great starter razor I can't wait to see you break it in. Make sure you hydrate the lather a little more than usual you will get better glide. Also it's gonna take you a little bit longer being newer so that will prevent it drying on your face. Pre shave oil works really well with straights as well just make sure you get it off your hands.
@Tobins_throwbacks
@Tobins_throwbacks 20 дней назад
Awesome! I had no idea about the razor until I got to talking with a couple of people the other day. And thank you one other person mentioned making sure I hydrate it I'm glad you guys said something because it's probably something I would have overlooked, like honestly. I probably would have been focused on a thousand other things. Thanks, man! I appreciate it!
@lastshadow9351
@lastshadow9351 20 дней назад
Very cool! It's a nice set and I do like the fact that they are putting their own edge on it before it goes out. Just three things that helped a lot for me; One, make your lather a little on the wet side so during the shave it doesn't fade on you. Two , do your shave when there isn't anything pressing, so you don't get in a hurry and lose your concentration. Three, when you bring the blade to your face, flatten the blade out and once you touch your face then pull up on the angle as you stroke. Just some starting out advice I got from several people and it helped out a bunch. I forgot a couple of times to flatten out the blade and got a "memory" line one of the times. Those cuts take weeks to heal, so you'll remember after the first good one-lol! Good luck Brother!
@Tobins_throwbacks
@Tobins_throwbacks 20 дней назад
Thanks Ian! Will do on the hydration! A couple other guys have mentioned that as well and I'm thankful that you guys have because it's really driving the point home and without it I definitely would have overlooked it. I'm not sure I completely understand tip three. I'm trying to visualize it. I think I understand 🤔😊 Thanks again man!
@lastshadow9351
@lastshadow9351 19 дней назад
@@Tobins_throwbacks Basically you're putting the side of the blade and not the edge on your face at the start and then tilting it up slightly to get the angle, then starting the stroke. It's just like people do with a new safety razor and put the bar or top cap against the face at first before starting. The only safety on a straight is the side of the blade. Part of this just makes you conscience of what you're doing. It's easy to reach over to stretch the skin and bump the blade into your face. I watched Matti Lindholm, the Stallion, and a few others to really get a feel of how it's done. They make it look easy, but when you're really paying attention, there's a lot of little things they do that make them so good.

I am looking forward to seeing you share using a sr. That looks to be a good starter kit. I would suggest looking at how Italian barbers hold the razor. It is a similar principle to choking up on a chef knife and giving you more control when cutting. Plus having the thumb on the side blade helps to lock your angle, keeping it more parallel with your face and less likely to twist the razor. Also try to avoid cutting motions or moving your hand to quickly around your face. Most important fight the tendency to put more pressure onto your skin. If the blade is sharp enough, it should cut effortlessly. And if the blade sticks or resists the cut; STOP! Do not push through it. I tried to add suggestions that others didn't add, but that are still helpful. Cheers and thanks for sharing.

@@Tobins_throwbacks Yeah, it was not long coming from DE to SR, when I realized why SR guys ran such wet lathers. Tallow is good because you can run wet but still very slick. Just be careful of your fingers, try to keep them dry. One word of advice, razor care is critical. Not just for appearance, but keeping your edge crisp for longer. There is some good content on that subject out in RU-vid land. The technique will come. Just go slow and use a light touch. Good luck and may the Rabbit hole have mercy on you 😜.

I've bought so many straights, wanting to make them work for me, but they don't. Something about my beard just dulls the edge and no amount of stropping brings it back. They don't get sharp enough, even on pasted balsa
@BigEShaves
@BigEShaves 19 дней назад
@@sterlingcampbell2116 My beard is coarse as boars hair and thick as hell. I am Cursed with the combination of that and a sensitive neck. As a result, I wore a beard most of my life. With that said, nothing has been keener or more comfortable for me than a properly honed straight razor. I do not use pastes and never finish on synthetics. That’s my preference, to each his own. I hope every man to finds that shave tool that works for him, and hope it brings him joy. Best of luck, and happy shaving.

@@BigEShaves I also have coarse facial hair, but at least don't have excessively sensitive skin. At least I don't think I do. I tried natural stones, synthetic stones, pastes, sending half a dozen razors to as many honemeisterd but they still always tug the goatee area. So sad because I think straights have such soal. Shavettes work a bit better for me.

@@Tobins_throwbacks Hi Tobin, I don't know if you've ever tried shaving with a straight razor? Or at least with a shavette? But what I would like to ask of you is that you definitely learn to work with two hands. Don't do that coming from behind the ear. You could end up without an ear. I'm also a beginner and have done about 30-40 straight shaves, so I know how you feel! For the first exercises, use a shavette (a really good one is the one from Dovo) and do exercises without a blade to begin with. Pay close attention to the angle of around 30 degrees. Then, when you say OK, you can slowly start with the straight razor, just with the beard growth to begin with, and go as far as you feel comfortable. If you feel uncomfortable, stop right there. Next time you'll go further and improve. And practice stretching your face using alum on your fingers. The most important thing when shaving with a straight razor is 1000% mindfulness and alertness! And when the time comes, like it did for me last Sunday, when you simply long for it, then you have arrived. But you have to never forget mindfulness and alertness. Have fun and Welcome in the Club!

Nice razor! Also, that badger brush sort of reminds me of the Omega 641 Silvertip Badger Brush that I have (I got a great deal on it from the Original Shave Company a long time ago). Anyways, I got a Holy Black Shavette Razor about a month ago as a test, and it's not for me so far. I know it's going to take a LONG time to get used to straight razor shaving -- and I've only been into traditional wet shaving for two years, believe it or not -- but getting the right angle and holding the razor and such, it takes a loooooootttt of skill. I was able to get some hair off of my face and I was trying to be very careful...but I just like the convenience of the single-edge and DE razors better, personally. I might give it another shot later, but we'll see.
@Tobins_throwbacks

Right? For Pure Badger it's a beautiful looking fiber. I expected something darker. For Shavettes I recommend the Leaf Dermaplaner and if you're ever serious about buying one remember I have a DISCOUNT code for it (tobin) 10%. Yeah the convenience of a DE is what has kept me in that realm/sphere. Plus, the fear of another Rabbit Hole 🤣
