Cutting a Massive Gemstone Over 1000 Carats! How I Facet This Jumbo Quartz

I take on faceting a very large piece of quartz. The piece is over twice as large of the largest stone that I have cut up to this point. I spend nearly 40 hours cutting this stone. The starting weight of the rough piece was 3,215 Carats/643 Grams. The cut piece weighs 1,160 carats.
Design for this stone: drive.google.com/file/d/1vREs...

I bought an assortment of new topper laps in different grit sizes just for working on this stone. The massive quartz wore a few of them out. I just bought some cheap ones on amazon that worked with my machine. Topper laps don't cut as true to angle as solid laps, but they are a cheap alternative: amzn.to/48ZV7xW

I am a graduate gemmologist (yep, we use an extra ‘m’ in the UK) and have always been in awe of the ability of gem cutters to create such incredibly beautiful stones from rough crystals. I’m aware of how much thought and consideration goes into the process the get the most from the rough whilst ensuring the best outcome and it amazes me how talented you are. One of my fellow students is a cutter and often shared his creations with us which were fabulous. Thanks for an insightful and interesting video. Will definitely be following you now.

I've made my own jewelry since I was a teen. One of my favorite stones is clear quartz. When I buy quartz beads I buy only clear quartz beads with polished holes. They cost extra but it's well worth it. The clarity is stunningly beautiful. Sometimes I string the beads with clear monofilament & it looks like the beads are floating in the air. Other times I'll string the beads with a color coated, braided wire. The color effect is really nice too. I frequently grow bored with my jewelry, take it apart & make new, different pieces. Never a dull moment! That huge clear quartz stone that you cut & faceted is simply magnificent. Kudos!

The geometry on this stone is incredible and the view into the stone after polishing the first facet was so cool. I think it's easy to take for granted that a stone like this needs to be cut by someone. Someone like you needs to put in many, many hours of extremely precise work for it to look the way it does when it's finished. I imagine that if you try to cut or polish one of those facets and the angle is off by even one degree it's gonna cause big problems. Considering all that just makes the finished piece even more impressive. This is so cool!

I hope this goes viral for you. You certainly put in the time; both in that stone in particular and building the skills that allowed you to cut it so beautifully. It was fun to see your problem solving when you hit an obstacle. I would have liked a little bit showing your use of the program to reconfigure the design for the crown. Maybe a little also to why you chose that particular shape/angles. Is it because of how quartz refracts light compared to other gemstones? Do you have to keep the angles within certain bounds to maximize the internal light reflection?

You can go from 325 grit to 1500 and not have deep scratches? Is that the difference between a lap and a wheel? I have to go to 280, 600,1500, and then 3000 on any agate that i polish. Do you use cerium as a final? Absolutely gorgeous final product! Its unbelievable that someone found a perfect piece of quartz that big. It looked diamond quality! Great job!!

Well, that large quartz wore out the 325 lap pretty quickly. Before long, it was cutting more smoothly than a new 600 grit. So, I skipped the 600 and went strait to the new 1500 topper lap and the scratches weren't too deep to be taken out with a little cutting from that.

I'm currently listening to a fascinating podcast called Empire, and it's covering the Koh-i-Noor diamond at the moment so no doubt this is why your channel popped up in my feed. I'm glad it did, this was so brilliant to watch. I've never seen a stone cut before. Your work is incredibly beautiful. I wouldn't want to give it back :-)

Really interesting video rendered unwatchable by inappropriate music. Please don't bother with the music in future!

Blown away sir! You have a very special gift! I'm gonna be totally honest. I always thought that a machine did the cutting and polishing of stones like that. I'm just baffled that you did that sanding by hand.

Seeing how the stone was faceted was very interesting. The care and time you took says you love your job.

Fascinating work. Surprising to me how much measurement is done manually, without sophisticated machines. Having watched watch repair videos, where they have a dozen tools for every type of wheel and mechanism, here it's way more hands on. As someone who has done soft stone sculpture this would've been a dream occupation.

You popped up in my feed. Was a joy to watch you take a large beautiful stone and allow it to display its full brilliance. You do very good work. Exquisite finished stone! Reminds me of the Dick Van Dyke show where Rob and Laura found the huge glass doorknob in an old desk and thought it was a diamond. The stone is that big.
