I have just started out in cutting the tree's that have been felled in the woods next to my house into your so called cookies, I have been drying them out in my shed, but now I have noticed that the cookies are distorting and some white fungus appearing in some area's of the surface, so watching your video will have really helped me in creating some nice tables that I have in mind doing! Just need to carry out your procedure in wrapping them up after applying that liquid you used! Many thanks for this information! I have taken note in what I have to do now that am getting older, 68 years and have just caught this bug in creating pieces of art from wood, in my youth I painted and always had a tree in the frame!
@TyMoser
@TyMoser 5 лет назад
Usually you don't want to wrap them because they need to have a little air flow to prevent the mold growth. The Pentacryl I soaked them in replaces the water and removes that issue though. When I don't use Pentacryl I put stickers (3/4-1" thick strips) between them and put them in a cool dry place to dry slowly. Awesome that you caught the bug! It's a very rewarding hobby!

Thanks for this video, I was glad to see your PPE when cutting the cookies. An errant chainsaw will go through human flesh as easy as a hot knife through butter and through bones as easy as a warm knife through refrigerated butter. I look forward to future video's about what you do with those cookies. As always safety first.

Your video popped up when I was trying to google what an appropriate moisture content for something like this would be before applying 2 part table top epoxy resin? My situation: I got a doug fir cookie I was planning on making an accent table out of. I'd like to leave the bark on since doug fir isn't that visually interesting. I had a big 7" thick piece that I cut in half (didn't do a great job of cutting it straight, so one half varies widely in thickness). According to my moisture meter, the recently cut side is at about 25%. What would you suggest? Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks!

hi, great video! I am just starting with milling myself just to make myself some stuff since I have got enought time to do it and I like to be busy with woods. anyway back to the question I got, how about the flexural rigidity of the bar you are using. I always have had still bars and they are pretty stiff. but I never had a longer one that a 24 inch. I am looking to buy a 48 inch or bigger. what can you advise me. is the stihl bar stiff enough to not get hollow slaps?
@TyMoser
@TyMoser 7 лет назад
The bar I use is 59" and there is a little bow in the center if I let the power head hang unsupported but it's not really noticeable in the end product. Since the chainsaw is generally more rough than a bandsaw mill, I like to mill a quarter to a half inch larger than I really want so if there is any flex, it should get take out with that. As far as getting a stronger, less flexible bar. I'm not sure at that length that any are better than Stihl.

If you have a moisture meter you can watch the moisture content over time. Otherwise after you give them a while you can start to weigh them and after they stop loosing weight they as good as they are going to get.

hi, im probely late for this video but im wondering on something. im planning on building a pc case out of a tree stump, i have found out if i just got it its going to crack after a while, so do you thing a can use the same method that you used in this video to provent it from cracking? thx for your time and help!
@TyMoser
@TyMoser 7 лет назад
I'm sure it would help but I would imagine that you would need to purchase a WHOLE BUNCH and it's not very cheap. Also, since you're talking about a stump large enough to house at least the components of a computer, i'm guessing it's fairly thick and would take years to fully dry. One thing to consider as well is the heat the computer will create could cause it to crack if it's not fully dry. Hope this helps!

I cut some slabs of similar size 10months ago. They were stored in a cold basement and then for 1 month at 30degrees C in a boiler room. Do you think they will be dry? My moisture meter reads 5% on the surface.
@TyMoser
@TyMoser 7 лет назад
What's the thickness of them? Since I used pentacryl, my drying process should be reduced and I wasn't even considering looking at them for at least a half a year. It's been almost a whole year and I still haven't looked at mine. It's hard to say if yours are dry or not. 5% on the surface sounds good but 11 months probably wouldn't be long enough unless it's a fairly thin slab. Hope this helps.

What % of moisture will be left in the wood after 3 months ?

+Patrick Meehan I honestly have no clue. The Pentacryl can apparently reduce dry time by up to 90% because it replaces the moisture but only time will tell. I've got a moisture meter that's a little on the cheap side so I'll probably play it safe and test it every month and only use it after the moisture level has stopped going down for two months in a row.

It must be great to have a understanding wife to be able to bring wood from a tree into the house to dry out! There must be an easier way than this! The wood is in a state of shock and it requires moisture, so I soak my cookies in engine oil as it is cheaper that linseed oil and all the others, then let it dry out and then apply what ever you fancy!

I have had success with putting primer paint on oneside of large maple cookies. My wood shop is not heated or air conditioned and I have stored six of them out of sight under our wueen size bed. It has worked. It is wasted space being used.

How do you cure end grain cookies for cutting boards. I don't want to use toxic chemicals.
@TyMoser
@TyMoser 7 лет назад
Very slowly. If they dry too fast they will crack. You'll need to slow down the drying process while trying to reduce the amount of moisture so they don't mold.

Nice, tasty lookin' cookies Ty...although I wouldn't wanna eat them, I have a random unrelated to woodworking question for you... what's your highest finish at darts?
@TyMoser

+HOPKIRK We usually just play cricket and don't add additional points. After a few beers it's hard enough to remember to just mark off what you got for the single round.

+Ty Moser (MonoLoco_Workshop) Ahhh cricket... yeah, cool game, fun to play... especially on a belly full of beer.

Alright, I'm a big noob here, have no idea what I'm doing.. but I do tree work for a living and we completely waste literally tonne after tonne of great wood with so much potential.. so a couple months ago, I started grabbing the odd cookie before the rest of the tree got tossed. But I really have no clue what to do beyond that. I want to make some tables, but first I gotta learn how. Coworkers told me they there cookies always cracked. So I left mine in my garage where it's nice and cool. No signs of cracking, but they're covered with fine white mold. Do you know if the wood is now damaged or still recoverable?
@ArsonistArborist

and no update yet, hey?
@TyMoser
@TyMoser 8 лет назад
If they dry out slow enough which they might be doing in your cool garage then they might not crack. On the other hand, you generally want good air flow to draw the moisture out and help prevent the mold. You might try spraying some Lysol or some other anti-mold grown stuff to help with that. As far as them being recoverable, you might just have to put a mask on and sand the white mold off to see how deep it goes and then make sure it's got some anti-mold spray on. Hopefull that helps.

I haven't created the next video yet but probably should sooner than later since I keep getting questions about it. They are still sitting in the same spot in what used to be my guest bedroom and is now my middle daughters room. I plan to get to them in the near future.

How much pentacryl do you think you used for one slab? Trying to decide if it's worth my money
@TyMoser
@TyMoser 7 лет назад
Probably a half gallon. The vendor has a calculator to help determine how much you'll need for the size of slab you have. www.preservation-solutions.com/wood-treatment-products/wood-calculator/

Ty Moser also, have you heard of using denatured alcohol for larger slabs? That's what I am currently experimenting with because of how expensive pentacryl is.
@TyMoser
@TyMoser 7 лет назад
I've never heard about it but after reading a few form posts about it, its kind of intriguing. However, from what I read, using denatured alcohol would speed up the drying process which might actually cause more cracking for something this thick. It would be an interesting experiment for sure.
@DilbertBodfrey
@DilbertBodfrey 7 лет назад
Ty Moser darn. Well I have a sycamore slab that I've been applying denatured alcohol to for about a week. Granted, before we cut slabs the tree had previously been on the ground for a year. I'll let you know how it goes
