I learned from an elderly woman I took care of to always cut back the plants. She told me they will come back so much healthier. She was 100% right. I do it every fall and my plants are amazing.

@mywalledgarden

Hi, you cut it back when it finishes flowering in the autumn and it will die back to the ground. It will come back in April and start flowering mid May. I will cut it back in 2 to weeks time and it will come back again. It will flower for about 6 months if cut back 2 to 3 times through the summer.
@mywalledgarden

When you cut it back after flowering in autumn you can cut right to the ground.

@mywalledgarden

Andrew Vasquez I just use secateurs and cut it back end of May/early June as far as back as you can see in the video. If you lose some flowers it does not matter. 3 weeks later it will start producing more flowers than before. If you don’t prune it the plant can get leggy.

How do you keep the bees from bothering you when you cut back the catmint?
@mywalledgarden
@mywalledgarden 4 года назад
They don’t usually bother you when cutting it back just be careful no to catch one but if you are wary try doing it early evening when there are a lot less around . I’ve never had a problem with them myself, they just usually move onto another plant when I start to cut it back.

To be fair it is you who are bothering the bees as they are trying to eat for their survival

Why did you cut it back just as it was in full bloom? This is when it's food for bees... Please wait till blooms are well and done before pruning. Bees and other pollinators desperately need our help.

I plant my garden for the bees so I would not cut my catmint in the middle of summer while they are enjoying it. Why not just leave it only remove stalks that need to be trimmed. The bees only have limited time to use it. All those great flowers thrown away ...so sad
@mywalledgarden
@mywalledgarden 4 года назад
Jennifer Gottlieb El-Azhari Yes you could deadhead the plant each time a flower stalk fades or it gets too long. I do it to keep it looking compact when the first flush of flowers start to fade and it starts getting leggy. It bushes out the second time round and will make more flowers. While it is growing back the bees move on to some of their other favourite flowers I have in the garden.
@jennifergottliebel-azhari149
@jennifergottliebel-azhari149 4 года назад
@@mywalledgarden what is the point? Bees are stressed due to human caused environmental damage. If you go to the trouble to grow the catmint you should leave it for them to use.
