Hedging jobs pay well for a professional because quite often the cleanup is half the work. There’s a lot to it. Imagine cleaning up after trimming a 100m hedge. That’s a big job. Using a hedge trimmer is fun and you do have to pinch yourself at times that you’re getting paid to use it. For the cleanup everyone has their preferred method. I usually keep a wheel barrow beneath the hedge & when I’m finished cutting I rake everything up in conjunction with a leaf blower as well and put all the clippings into the wheel barrow load after load and empty it into my trailer. The drop sheet method is a good one too. People use what works for them.

Just keep in mind that you might want to trim it narrower at the top and wider at the bottom so that the lower branches get enough light to keep leaves. If you trim the tops wide enough to shade out the bottom you will end up with naked branches holding up a leafy canopy! Think miniature tree form. Unless that’s what you’re after. You can always limb up an overgrown shrub to give it a miniature tree form and so you can plant beneath it.

I've used an electric B & D trimmer for years. It's been a workhorse but I no longer am, and wanted to make my job easier. ru-vid.comUgkx_rBCFuDW1zD6blTGhLkvAkxU657uR_lG Around the corners, the small side yard etc. was a pain to run the cord out to, so I bought this thinking I'd use it for touch-ups and hard to reach places. Well, I haven't used the corded one since! This is so light weight and so much easier. It has all the power I need because I start wearing down after about 20 minutes and I haven't run out of battery yet. It takes about two hours to charge. I've used it about twice a week for a month and still have line left too. My favorite feature is the blade inside the shield that keeps the line trim to where I don't even have to think about it. You can see from my pic that it's been heavily used and I probably should clean it more often. Very happy with it.

Don't use hedge trimmers on anything except a hedge. That type of pruning destroys the structure of shrubs. Prune with hand pruners, branch by branch, always cutting back to a branch or bud. Use a saw on big branches, if necessary.
