These shrubs and hedges are preventing access from the garage and front walk path, as well as completely blocking two front windows! Can a battery powered hedge trimmer cut them up, or will I be left explaining to the homeowner why I couldn't finish the job?! And just how long does a battery powered hedge trimmer last? Link to the ECHO trimmer I used: amzn.to/2DIMaP3 Will the Variegated Chinese Privet get the best of me?!

It's a beautiful house and the shrubs are such an eye sore. I would've removed all of them and planted smaller shrubs that don't block the view out the window and not plant anything next to the garage.
@sparky6086
@sparky6086 3 года назад
Would've been best to cut them to stumps. It's hard to kill bushes, even if you try, and the stumps would quickly grow, almost as if new ones were planted. This would be a happy medium between expensive complete removal, and the just enough to not do the job/just enough to piss off the neighbors, which this video shows. Also, leaving them tall and out of proportion with the house leaves the house with that "abandoned" look, which it began with.
@geekchick4859

We had yuccas at a rental we lived in, in Melbourne, Australia. We let them grow, when they reached the roof, we lopped the tops and planted them. By the time we left, it was a wall of yucca over the front window. When the yuccas were small and sparse when we first moved in, the front room would reach in excess of 50 degrees C in summer. It was bloody hot!! Leaving them there may be a shade thing, and it will help to keep your house cooler is summer. But yeah, you’re supposed to trim them for the winter to let the light in!!

I could not agree more, they should never be higher than the lowest point of the window trim, and at the corners they should be at least three feet below the soffits/eves, I have seen rats use trees and large shrubs to access the roof/attic. An apartment building I lived in I could hear rats in the attic, the management cut the trees back away from the building by about 3-4 feet and when I went out that evening on my balcony for a smoke I could see DOZENS of rats in the tree looking up at the roof like they were trying to judge whether or not they could make the jump. There was a dead rat on the ground the next day too, tried to make it and failed. Landed on the patio below my apartment.

I like that you pointed out access to utilities. As a utility worker that used to work as a residential installer, I HATED dealing with the overgrown and usually prickly bushes the homeowners would constantly neglect. I cannot stress enough for people to keep the growth around their home trimmed back so a tech can service their utility connections, hang lines, etc. without getting scratch up or soaked by wet plants. Thank you for that. I would add: people, when you want the home to look nice, don’t let the brushes or trees cover windows or lights. It encourages mold growth by holding moisture, it hides people trying to break into your home, and it blocks sunlight and fresh air.

Personally, if it were my home, I would have cut the shrubs in front of the garage and windows down even more, to waste height, but thats more a taste thing. In the short term, it would look even worst, but give it a couple of months after fill-leaves grow back, then it would start looking nice.

I just did a quick scroll through the comments and didn't see any mention of it, but I think you saved this woman thousands of dollars on future repairs. The shrub on the corner, while attractive in composition, was going to start rotting the fascia and eaves, not to mention the roof. Whatever you charged was well worth it, from the perspective of a home owner's wallet.

I literally can smell the pine right now. And I also remember my dads hedger ready to quit. It would get hot and not want to work. But the thing was like vintage. Some home owners have aged or disable (both) . They need others to do what no longer able to do job i loved to do but unable to. All plants and trees grown have information about what a adulthood could be. Some people plant because they like look when small not worried about later either will replace or move. If you have time or dont mind looks for awhile there are many regrouping pruning or removing

I've used an electric B & D trimmer for years. It's been a workhorse but I no longer am, and wanted to make my job easier. ru-vid.comUgkx_rBCFuDW1zD6blTGhLkvAkxU657uR_lG Around the corners, the small side yard etc. was a pain to run the cord out to, so I bought this thinking I'd use it for touch-ups and hard to reach places. Well, I haven't used the corded one since!This is so light weight and so much easier. It has all the power I need because I start wearing down after about 20 minutes and I haven't run out of battery yet. It takes about two hours to charge. I've used it about twice a week for a month and still have line left too. My favorite feature is the blade inside the shield that keeps the line trim to where I don't even have to think about it. You can see from my pic that it's been heavily used and I probably should clean it more often. Very happy with it.

We became full time RV lifestyle a bit more than a year ago. Duriung this time we;ve been to MANY different RV parks seeing/judging the care of each of the facilities as I took extreme pride in the 3 homes/properties we previously owned. Detailed yards to perfection one was photo'd in a "neighborhood magazine" to show off "YOU TOO COULD HAVE A BEAUTIFUL YARD LIKE THIS! BUT TODAY!" sort of thing. I took pride in the detail of my work and yards. Now, after more than a year and bored to death no longer owning a yard I always loved to maintain, having my "private time" doing so I finally became the "Camp Host" at this one we're at now in So East Arizona that has been neglected for many years. And now... HERE I GO!!! At first site pulling into the camp noticed the neglect. Kind oa a "OUT SIDE EYES" sort of thing. I began taking it upon myself working on some things here and finally hired to be 'THE GUY". I just picked up an electric hedger, nothing crazy with my own money for someone else but it's doing the job. In the middle of working on hedges similar to what you have here I thought I"d check out other people doing the same and found this.... Yeah, they'll be ugly for the rest of the season but will be beautiful again next. I would have tried to talk the customer down to bringing those down another 75%. Having them look proper when spring time comes again... But that's just my opinion.

I was looking at my overgrown shrub to see how thick the branches are. I pulled them apart to get a look when a robin started flying in and out of it. Now I guess I need to wait for the bird to finish nesting in it. I thought I'd need a little chainsaw but it looks like a hedgetrimmer might do it, hard to believe though. Thanks for the video.

I am a professional landscaper, I know customers say just take off a little when they need to be cut way back, the homeowner just let those get out of hand, as 99% of homeowners do, I have had many say, they didn't know they had to trim them. First thing I do when I buy a property is properly cut and trim everything.

I moved into a home given to me by my father and it was a huge mess and anyone I called out basically just mowed the grass and left....vines on electric box overgrown hedges so bad they grew through the fence and created almost a new one on the other side. Trash and old tires..Sidewalk covered in overgrown grass and driveway with huge patches of grass...I gave up on calling landscaping businesses and saved for tools...I have a hedge trimmer but it was so slow and I felt I wasn't making progress so I just hacked stuff down with a machete and it looked terrible but its growing back now and hopefully I can do a better job hedge trimming and have more patience since I'm new to lawn maintenance and still have alot to learn...i enjoy your vids and learn alot

I would have cut the center one in half horizontally. It will grow and can then be made into a nice hedge. The one at the garage, needs cut down more in height as well. As for the one on the right corner of the house, it needs to match to the garage height to balance the look. Done this a lot of times. JMHO

Some times a major reduction of a hedge will take two growing seasons to really look good... along with several touch up trimmings. It's what happens when bushes are allowed to go natural like that. They really show out when work is put in . You did good.
