In this Rockler Saturday Demo Video we take a closer look at the popular Rockler Compact Router Ellipse and Circle Jig. You’ll learn what comes in the box and how to use this jig.
This jig is pre-drilled for compact plunge routers from DeWALT Porter-Cable and Bosch. It’s not set up for Makita’s compact router. But, I’ll bet an enterprising woodworker could drill a few more holes in the jig arm to make it work just fine for this router, too.
This jig will rout circles up to about 24-1/2 inches in diameter. We show you the jig using a DeWALT router and a 1/4 upcut spiral bit. But, the bit’s diameter doesn’t really matter. And, you could use a straight bit instead of a spiral bit if that’s the bit you have.
This jig can be used to cut perfect circles. There’s nothing tricky about that. Now, routing an ellipse isn’t any harder, but there are a few more steps to the set-up process. In this video, Chris Marshall shows you how to complete both processes.
Even if you rarely cut circles or ellipses, a jig like this will sure come in handy when you DO need it.

I'm used to larger, corded routers ru-vid.comUgkxfQ5_mgwq6PcudJvAH25t-I4D-3cTPz4z so this was a different experience for me. Basically, this is an incredibly sweet machine, fits well in the hand, etc. It has slightly less power than I'm used to, but that's understandable. Maneuvering freehand takes some practice. These days, it's especially nice to be able to avoid power cords. This is above the level of a hobbyist but below a pro level.

I ended up ordering the 1 3/4 dewalt router because the Canadian stores that sell the jig only sell the larger jig. I may never make elipses bigger than 16x20 but I also thought having the slightly stronger motor will be good. I also want to do carving with it so I hope that size router won't be too cumbersome. These tips for measuring are helpful. Maybe Ill get an 1/8" bit for cutting thin plywood and 1/4" inch to cut mdf.

A couple of design considerations and suggestions for Rockler. Jig is rock solid and accurate, which is great. There are use cases where the jig won't work. For example, you need to drill four holes into your work piece, other jigs get by with one, or none if one uses the center circle with double sided tape and a piece that travels around the center circle. The base and the offset under the router plate is thick, so make sure your drill bit extends far enough to make up for that, especially if your stock is anything thicker than a template. One caution: Drilling the holes for your router so the jig fits can get scary because of the material one drills through, which is tough, leaves a burned plastic smell and - at least for me - made the sound of glass shattering. But once that hurdle was cleared, it's worked well to cut circles for the use cases where 4 holes in your work piece is not an issue.

Thanks for your honest feedback. We will pass this along to our product development team. Please note that it is recommended to attach the jig to the bottom/back of your workpiece so that the attachment holes will not be seen. Thanks

Question? Is it better to have the “ back side” up since the screws will put holes in the wood ? Can’t wait to get mine and start making my own art painting panels . I love ovals for some of my artwork . I’ll use mdf as the cradle support.

I wanted to purchase this jig to cut a circle for a project I was working on plus to have the ability to cut an ellipse in the future. I own of the early 1hp VS Bosch Colt Trim routers with the fixed square base. There was a question with the salesperson at the Rockler store if it was compatible with this jig. I wound up purchasing the circle cut only jig as we did not know and it worked perfectly. Will this jig work with my current router or do I definitely need a plunge router to go with this jig?

Will cordless routers work with this jig? I have the Ridgid version.
@chrismarshall6373
@chrismarshall6373 4 года назад
Michael Kratky it would depend on the screw pattern on your Ridgid router’s baseplate. You’d probably need to drill some holes through the jig arm to match the Ridgid pattern. But then, corded or cordless will work fine.

I read the comment below about using double sided tape instead of drilling holes to hold the base down. Can you recommend a tape that’s strong enough for that? Then of course you’ve got the issue of getting a tape with that strong of an adhesive off! Acetone?
@rockler
@rockler 2 года назад
Hi there, carpet tape reinforced with fibers is easy to find at most hardware stores and home centers. It will work fine for securing the base of an ellipse/circle-cutting jig to a clean wood or plywood workpiece. The fiber-reinforced tape is a stronger choice than carpet tape with no fibers in it. Also, bond strength depends on lots of surface area. So use longer strips of tape than shorter pieces for best results.

Hey Chris, If you don't want screw holes in your circle or ellipse, can you use double-sided tape to hold the base in place? It seems like that should work if you're careful and don't push outward while going around the perimeter. Have you ever tried that?
@rockler
@rockler 4 года назад
Yes, I have tried double-sided tape with the circle/ellipse jig. It works well and is a good way to avoid having to drill holes in the jig base. Good tip!

@@rockler Can you also use double sided tape to hold the centering pin? Don't know if there is enough surface area to keep the pin from moving.

A video about this jig says to run the router COUNTERclockwise. You say clockwise. What's the diff? I have been having a lot of trouble trying to do these. I got the Xfasten Tape which is supposed to be so super - but it isn't holding very well. Had to drill holes and screw the wood down.

Please excuse me if this question has already been asked and answered in the video, but what is the maximum size for a circle for this jig?
@rockler

24.5" is the max size.
@JanineMKartist
@JanineMKartist 2 года назад
@@rockler I wish you had this size for the bigger routers. I have to get the bigger jig even though I’ll like only make up to 24 inches . I didn’t want the compact router in case I end up needing the slightly more powerful motor of the router I ordered .

Can you cut an inner eclipse so you will have a frame?
@rockler
@rockler 3 года назад
Yes, the second cut would simply be a smaller ellipse inside the larger one. Reset the jig to smaller diameters and proceed with the inner ellipse.
