This seems yo be the only video on RU-vid which actually shows how to create the kerf groove! Thank you. The only question is how to ensure consistent depth of the groove.
@BrucesShop
@BrucesShop Год назад
You could put a sharpie mark on the blade the depth you want. The blade will wear a bit.

Sir thank you so much. I have to do this very same project with my front door and it has the same issue. From missing the groove for the weather stripping to the misalignment of the door. Feeling confident now I can do it on my own. Thanks again

So, I used essentially this exact method to cut a kerf into the jamb stop of my 80s built home. It definitely worked to fit the modern vinyl weatherstripping. However, a quick measurement on a prehung door shows about 2” from jamb stop to the inside of the door threshold, whereas the door I am working on is more about 1 1-2”. The new weatherstripping is too thick and will not allow the old door to close. As such, I now much remove the jamb stop and reattach about 1/2” outward, so that the thickness of the weatherstripping may be accommodated. My recommendation is to take some measurements before you commit to this cut, so you may determine how (or whether at all) to approach your upgraded weatherstripping.

Great point
@collinemorris

Just to follow-up, I ended up removing the door stop and re-nailing it into place about 5/8” outward to accommodate the new weatherstripping. This actually allowed me to clean up the kerf cut a bit more beneath the stop and against the threshold. Final note - the grout attachment is pretty abrasive against the door frame and in my case, created some unintentional gouges in the wood. Given at this point I am basically refinishing the entire door threshold anyway, I just sanded down with my sander to a smooth finish and used a filler on a couple of the deepest gouges. No big deal…overall the method works in a pinch. I’d hate to buy a specialized tool or a kerf router bit just to use once or twice in my life. Multi tools are a must-have in any man’s garage, and you can ultimately ass this to one of its many uses!

Bruce, I've had one of those multi tools for years. You won't believe how often you'll pull that thing out. They are really handy. I'm sure your kit came with blades to cut soft and mild steel as well. Money well spent my friend.

Number one tool on our job every single day. Got 2 atomic 20v dewalts and we use both of them every day. Had them for a couple years now and they still amaze me daily. They're variable speed and easy to control single handed. I've cut a couple kerf grooves myself with mine pretty simple. This would work a little better if you use the right blade, grout blade means grout but it worked
@BrucesShop
@BrucesShop Год назад
It did. I did this cut a few years ago and all is well
@garybrady7245

I didn't mean it wasn't the way to do it, I just meant that with a correct blade it would be alot easier on you and the tool. Every one knows that at least 70% of your tool is your blade. But by no means the grout blade worked but I would be afraid that it would scar the door jamb or casing and have to sand out deep scratches. I guess it depends on if it's painted or stained too because I know staining would definitely show. But if there's a guy out there that don't have one of the multi tools in their arsenal, they don't know what they're missing. Still using two Dewalt 20V Atomic series with a good 4ah battery that thing will last me pretty much all day and I use them daily. Home Depot did have a deal ; You get the multi-tool, one 2ah battery, one charger, a blade, and another Allen wrench I believe, and a bag to carry it in for $89 worth they're weight in gold. I apologize if I ruffled any feathers I just do everything with my Dewalts I would be naked without them. Trust me if you didn't know, now you know go buy you one you won't regret it

have you thought about brazing two blades together? I suspect it will be cleaner than trying to expand the kerf slot with an abrasive grout blade.

why not just go to HD or lowes and buy door stops already made up with weather strips for around 30 / 40 dollars. or if you must remove existing stops and rip grove with table saw .....or even purchas selfr sticking strips and stick to stops already in place......just sayin' .....100 dollar tool that you'll never5 use again....is foolish

The added strips com too close to the doorknob after installed. Thanks for your input though. As well the existing stops are part of the door jamb.

$100 for the tool and $50 for the blades???? You're shopping at the wrong store. Got all that for under $40 at Harbor Freight and it does the same job. If you only need to use the tool occasionally and not as a pro, my advice is get it at Harbor Freight and "Git-ter Done"

@domenicsandri2740

Not the correct tool. The groove you made won’t hold the weatherstripping. Put glue. It will be Hell to replace in the future, but you used the wrong tool for the job, so you have no choice. When replacing the worn out weatherstripping in the future, you’ll have to use another type, because you won’t be able to reuse the groove you made after you used glue.
