The clouds come and go
Yet something is different
Are we falling in love?

Then your kiss so soft
Then your touch so warm
The stars still shine bright
The mountains still high

One thing I personally feel the movie did better than the book was the ending. When Superman confronts Luthor, Lex throws a temper tantrum and says how much he could help humanity and save the world now, due to his newfound knowledge. In response, Superman tells him something akin to, "If you wanted and cared, you would have done that years ago." In the comic, this happens while they're having a brawl and Superman simply knocks Lex out while saying that, ending their fight. However, in the movie, that moment is calmer in comparison, and Lex is given the time to digest and admit Superman's point, seemingly hurting him. Here, the end of Lex's tunnel vision is explicitly shown. However, it's a tad bit too late. It's a simple yet very effective change and shows Superman's final moral triumph over Lex very well. Although, unlike the comic, Lex, as his last deed, does act upon this revelation and ironically ends up being the one responsible for the legacy of the man he hated being passed down to the next generation by helping create the next Superman.

To be fair, the way the comic ended was moreso just a way to reinforce that Lex was a bastard who'd never actually have an epiphany. While the movie preferred to show when it came to Superman his words would break Lex down more than anything else. Both basically end with Lex failing once again, it's just the movie decided to let Superman deliver a softer blow that made Lex face the truth of his actions while the comic was a far more standard Superman and Lex dynamic where Lex will always be a stubborn egotistical asshole and Superman will always have to knock him down in the end.
@NightRunner2099
@NightRunner2099 2 месяца назад
@@Shift_Salt The thing is, Luthor changing post his last encounter with Superman isn't really limited to the movie. In the book he's hinted to have been mellowed out and somewhat humbled due to Superman dying and his words seemingly having some effect on him. But that's fair. I guess I just like how the movie framed it more. It's more inline with the philosophy of Superman and shows why he gave Luthor all those chances all those years. And Luthor admitting it is somewhat reminiscent of the impossible riddle. Luthor's ego, the immovable object, finally surrenders to Superman's will and not giving up, which is the unstoppable force. It also adds to the whole thing that being Superman isn't really about powers, it's about doing the right thing. And Luthor could have done that if he hadn't been too busy with his petty one sided rivalry with Superman.

I’ve got the comic right in front of me, and Superman does indeed say “You could have saved the world *_years_* ago if it mattered to you, Luthor.” We don’t get to see Lex in his cell after that, just a line from Quintum saying, “Even *_Luthor_* seemed to find some closure in the face of renewed global calls for his *_execution._* He seems so *_faded,_* so small, now that he finally got his dearest *_wish.”_* with no indication that he helped them clone Superman (or artificially inseminate Lois, in the movie).

I'm kinda surprised that the famous page with Superman comforting the girl who wanted to take her own life was cut out as well. I really like the idea of Lex genuinely liking Clark for his authenticity. Even if he is someone Lex would deem as weak or irrelevant, he was always his true self. Something in Lex's ego and vanity, can't really see in himself. He's so wrapped up in his own pride that someone like Clark is actually something he's secretly envious of whereas someone like Superman is someone he believes he could be.
@Argusthecat
@Argusthecat 2 месяца назад
I think it's interesting that all the traits he likes in Clark are the same traits he hates in Superman. Because when it's someone weaker than him, he can hold them at arm's length from his ego, and treat them almost like a puppy. Amusing, precious, but not really relevant. When it's Superman, though? When it's someone who outclasses him in every way? His ego can't take it. What he previously admired he now despises because NOW it's showing him that being strong and being kind aren't exclusive things. And if that were true, it would mean that he isn't some visionary man of the future, he's just a dick. And Lex can NEVER allow himself to be "just" anything.

All Star Superman was one of Dwayne Mcduffie's last projects, it was released not long after his death. The loss of McDuffie was a huge blow to DC animation. Throughout Justice League, he was given more and more responsibilities until he became head writer for Justice League Unlimited. After that, he wrote and produced several of the straight to DVD animated films. It's very likely that Bruce Timm and Alan Burnett would have let him take over as the main producer and writer of DC animation.

That stuff with Solaris around 11:30 I think that's emblematic of why I feel like there just haven't been any good Superman movies lately. Actually, I feel like it's an overarching problem with a lot of people writing Superman. The natural instinct is to give the character flaws and let them do not-ideal things and humanize them. And for a lot of characters you want that. The story is about them it's about them working past those issues or coming to grips with those not-so-beneficial parts of themselves that can't be changed and either saying "I can stop" or "I can't stop but I can change how I react" and that's how it works. But Superman stories aren't about Superman. You don't want Superman to be humanized and flawed like that, I think. Superman being super is kind of the point. He actually is just better than everyone else. He always does his best, and his best is usually better than can be expected of any human being. For a regular story this is a death knell because a perfect character can't learn or change or grow... But Superman's not a character. Superman stories aren't about Superman. They're about how he effects the people around him, they're about how despite all the bullshit physical DBZ-tier laser eye blasts and super-luminal flight and invulnerability, what really makes Superman effect change is his relentless, boundless optimism, his positivity, his ability to be more Good with a capital G than anyone else. The powers just support that. So when you have Superman say something like "I think I'm all out of mercy", it feels off, because that's not what Superman's about. Superman's supposed to be an infinite font of mercy, and the wisdom to apply it where needed. The story isn't about Superman punching out this giant sun-virus thing, it shouldn't be about how sad he is that Lois got Covid and died or whatever, it's not about Krypton's weird over-represented influence on a kid who never saw it; it's about Solaris being effected and changed because of Superman just being himself. It's about how striving for that boundless optimism isn't naive or bad, it's objectively a good thing, and people should try to match Superman and be better people, more forgiving people. Superman stories aren't about Superman, they're about us, and how our ideas shape us.
@ExeErdna

Superman is super yet being a god he realizes he cannot do everything due to being held back by time. Even knowing he can't save the world he still saves the world. He doesn't become a ruler because that isn't his job, his calling. He's there to help how he can and to inspire those around him. Which is in theory the human ideal of life. Yet too many people do not understand DC and just want to dump their bitterness and trauma on a page and demand people like it.

I'd recommend people who enjoyed All-Star Superman read Tom DeHaven's Depression-era "It's Superman!," which has a lovely stumblebum style, with richly-imagined, wrinkled characters (and a great Jonathan Kent). Elliot S! Maggin's "Last Son Of Krypton" gives its strong characterisation a bold-line Silver Age stride, informing (if not inspiring, perhaps) the superhumane spirit of works like All-Star Superman. To me, these form a lovely unofficial life story trilogy, although I suppose you could trade Maggin for Superman II if you wanted them all to come from different media. I can't actually remember if I've seen this adaptation - probably in fragments through excellent videos such as this one - but I do know that while excising the creation of Qwewq is a shame, erasing Bar-El's Scottish accent is a crime.

I always start one of your videos with the question “when am I going to start crying this time?” In this one it was when the atomic bomb was mentioned. I remember being about four years old and realizing that there were threats out there that my parents were unable to protect me from, and which terrified them. It was a shattering experience. I wish I had had Superman then to help me with my fears, if only imaginatively.

6:07 Notice they make Jimmy’s dress look more ill-fitting in animation than how Quitely drew it, sort of feels like a disservice to how he’s characterized in All Star imho

I'll never forget the day I saw the movie and said to myself "oh! This is why people like superman." Only to discover the book is EVEN BETTER. Also please keep making videos sometimes I literally cry listening to someone apply real psychology and philosophy to something that people would normally just read and throw away as though it was just entertainment.

I tried to watch this when it first came out and couldn't get past the prison riot scene. Not only did they have Superman passively allow people to die by staying in disguise during Parasite's rampage, he actively killed people by freezing them in the giant monsters path and letting them be shattered. I Turned it off immediately. Then I found out later that they cut out Superman stopping the girl Reagan from jumping, which is one of the best Superman moments of all time. Massively disappointed, maybe I'll try again.

This adaptation of All-Star Superman is one of my favorite Superman stories, as it is remarkably well-made despite the changes from the source material. As such, the film's final confrontation and ending are superior to the original story's. Great job covering this film and the comic book series it's derived from.
