Cutting Lengthy Screws for Better Fitting Drawer Knobs

Alright, fess up...who here has bought knobs at Hobby Lobby, TJMaxx, Ross, World Market...and then gotten frustrated when you realized the screws are about 4,000 inches too long. 😆 Typically if you get knobs from Lowe's or Home Depot, the knob itself has the recess and a screw goes into it. You'll usually have two different length screws that come with your knob and about 95% of the time, one will fit your drawer perfectly. (On those rare occasions that you still have an eighth of an inch overhang, adding a washer or two will do the trick!)
But for all of us who love painted, ceramic, porcelain, glass, or wooden knobs, then Lowe's or Home Depot just won't cut it. There are plenty of places to buy gorgeous knobs for a steal, but they do come at a cost...those dreaded LOOOOOONG screws that are attached right to the knob itself. In the past, I've used a Dremel to try to saw the excess off, while desperately trying to not cut off my fingers. I've also used comically gigantic bolt cutters to snip off the end...and when I say comically gigantic, I mean it. I had bolt cutters that we bought to cut a truck's tie rod in half...these things were like 3 feet long. Talk about overkill for a teeny little drawer knob screw. Not only are both of these approaches dangerous, but they also usually result in the knob falling to the surface below, which, if you are cutting the screw off a breakable knob...well, having it go crashing to the ground is the last thing you want.
Guess what? None of that, including all the danger that accompanies it, is necessary. Go run to your toolbox and grab your wire strippers. Right now. Seriously, I'll wait.
Got them? Ok, now look at the holes in the center...yeah, the holes that say "Insert screw". Yep, that's a screw cutter. Open the handles a little bit to line up the holes, find the one that fits your screw, pop it in there, and squeeeeeeze. It takes a little muscle, but in a few seconds, the pressure will give way and the excess chunk of the screw will fall out. Your delicate knob will still be safely attached to the tool until you unscrew it. Clean up the end of your no shorter screw with a metal file, pinch it with some pliers, or even just screw it in and out of the tool a few times to get it nicely rethreaded. That's it. Easy, peasy.
If your wire strippers don't have this fancy screw cutting option? Or if your toolbox is lacking altogether? No worries. This little lifesaver costs less than ten bucks. (And as a bonus, it also does a bunch of other helpful stuff)
Need the wire stripper / screw cutter? You can find one here amzn.to/3cBIyhK (Affiliate links don't cost you a penny, but help my small business in huge ways! Thank you!)

Just the advice I was looking for. Thank you for taking the time to make this handy little tutorial! Now I'm off to the store to get that tool

I tried this. It takes enormous strength. I did not manage to get to cut a screw. I just strip threaded it.

Don’t know what the screws in the video were made of but I bought the tool suggested and there was no way it was cutting through my drawer knobs…

Sorry to hear that. I've used it on quite a few different knobs and not found one that it can't cut. Most of the knobs are from Hobby Lobby or HomeGoods though, so perhaps they aren't as strong as ones from a hardware store or fancier supplier?

Sorry you feel it's a rubbish video. I've used this to cut quite a few knobs and not had a problem. It does take some pressure and I have to use two hands to really clamp down. Sorry you didn't have the same results.

Damn! I also couldn’t cut three out of my four knobs, but this is not a crappy/rubbish video. lol. someone just had a different experience than you. Anyway, the 3 it didn’t work on wouldn’t screw into any of the holes so I suspect this was the issue (in my case anyway). **The Copper Elm - Thanks for taking the time to voluntarily make content that was useful to many

Thank you. Oddly enough event dad & recently deceased husband said they weren't sure how to shorten screws. They could build additions onto a home but weren't sure on shortening screws. My guess it was bothersome all the questions I had. Now I'm left to figure out not only this but everything on the long "honey do list" all on my own. It's stressful but this however was the most simple, easy & straightforward I stumbled across yet. Thank u sooo much. It is so nice to check items off that mile long list + accomplish as a female on my own. I've surprised our sons what I've accomplished thus far, they thought I was a clueless blonde. I'm showing them that we WILL survive after our grief subsides little by little. Bless u a million.

You must have incredibly strong hands! Lol! I tried this and it took an incredible amount of pressure and leveraging the table to cut the screw. I've resolved to purchasing knobs from etsy that come with machine screws that screw into the knob and can be purchased in multiple sizes. Guess I'm the odd ball out on this b/c it was near impossible for me. And I'm pretty strong.

That’s a great idea, but if you can’t grip or squeeze then what? I have carpal tunnel and it hurts to grip things too tightly.

I'm sorry it didn't work for you! It definitely takes some muscle and different tools will perform differently. Honestly, if it doesn't work using the tool, I'd return it and get your money back! Luckily for me the one I got worked great...so no bologna here.

@TheCopperElm

Oh no!! It definitely takes some pressure to be able to snap it, but I have noticed it's a little easier if I squeeze and then release, repeatedly. I do have to use both hands to get it to cut through.

🤦🏽‍♀️ I ordered the stripper…put my knob in the tool…turned the knob in the tool and the screw actually came out of the knob! So, that’s not what I was intending to do but that’s even better because 1) the screw was a little too big for the hold on the tool and 2) now I can put the shorter screw in that came with the knobs so was replacing. Not the intended purpose, but thanks!

Some are trickier than others and they definitely require a little muscle. If I can't get one to snap off, I squeeze the handles together as close as possible, release, and repeat until it eventually cuts through.

Hi -- I'm so excited to see this, it's the closest I've come to achieving what I want to do with some drawer pulls I have. What I great tool -- thank you! Will order one now. Hope you can help me with my dilemma. I have some beautiful knobs I got on sale at Anthropologie and a few other places. The screws are already attached -- seriously attached, you can't remove them. I'd like to use these in the bathroom and hall closet, etc. as wall hooks (side note: I prefer hooks to towel rails -- they take up less space and you can space them creatively. Also, kids struggle with a towel rail. But it's obvious how to use a hook, which means they are much more likely to hang their towels up. Anyway... all the videos I've seen about using knobs as hooks start with knobs without screws...frankly, I don't see that as much of a challenge. So, my question is about after I cut down the screw with your amazing tool. (For length, I guess I'd be guided by anchor depth?). Do I need to modify the screw further before I put the anchor in the wall and screw the hook/knob in (securely!)? I saw somewhere that the screw should be pointy. Thank you!
