This is great. I have learned a lot about what I draw and what it takes to have it made from watching your videos. You are educating up the stack. All architects should see what goes into the production of the stone elements of our designs.

Superb concise video demonstrating carving a moulded window head from Portland stone.The systematic approach on removing checks and subsequent working of the mouldings (detailed with great close up shots) was wonderful to observe. Great explanation and use of the mitre gauge (a simple but essential ‘bespoke’ piece of kit). The modification to the return mitres (based on the original design) was interesting too. As is the norm at Mainstone Carving, the completed work is always finished to perfection - attention to detail is the modus operandi!!! Thanks so much Tom for continuing to post such valuable insights from your workshop- they are always inspirational!

What happens when you start on a commission for say a stonemasonry firm and halfway through or after several hours a defect turns up in the stone? I'd presume in most cases, unless you supplied the stone yourself, the company would deliver a replacement stone, but the lost hours won't be compensated?
