Cutting the First Hay of the Season!

Just a Few Acres Farm

Today's the day: It's time to cut the first hay of the season! I fire up the Farmall 656 tractor and the International 990 haybine, and head out to cut five acres of thick hay. I explain how the equipment works and the cutting process along the way, and how to fix a few common problems that occur when cutting hay with a haybine. Hay season is here!
Note:
-We do not offer farm tours
-We do not ship our farm's products

I cut about 5 acres here in KY last week. There was only a 20% chance of late afternoon scattered rain on the day I was going to bale. You guessed it, I got about 3/4 of the way finished and a pop up shower soaked the windrows. Only way to guarantee it will rain is to try and bale hay.... Good luck!!

I can see that farming is no picnic, believe me! When I was a18-19 y.o. teenager, I used to disc, plow, spring-tooth, drive truck during wheat harvest, on the local wheat farms in my area of the country. Back then, it was an idyllic way of life. But I can see that for a farm/ranch to function efficiently, there's got to be a good knowledge of mechanics as well as farming experience. Pete, you are a very fascinating dude, believe me!

Growing up in the 80's and 90's on a small farm in Southeast Indiana I mowed a lot of orchard grass hay with a 656 and a 472 NH Haybine. I really miss it, just watching your videos bring back so many memories for me. Anytime I ever wrapped wet grass hay around the rollers, I found the easiest and quickest way was to just cut it straight across the rollers with a sharp utility knife and slowly engage and it will unplug instantly.

Why is it so satisfying to watch that? All that new fangled equipment you have. I noticed you didn't mention turning on the auto steer? 50+ years ago I remember riding with my Grandpa in North Dakota. he used a H International, sickle, dump rake, Farmhand, and Hay Stack Frames (don't remember what they were called). My Uncle who is in his 70's still has the H that had the farmhand on it. I believe it was like a 1947 model, give or take. I remember my grandfather had new wooden teeth/forks (?) in the shed, since they would hit a gopher hole or something and they would break frequently.

On an extra note, and another video you were talking about starting hay fields, the way we used to do it we would drill rye with alfalfa and then mow the law and chop it put it up in the silo. I know again this is a little extra machinery but coming from a dairy this is what we did to start new fields.

Excellent video Pete :) yes those 1960's to 1980's McCormick International or International tractor great motor plus transmission to they use and even PTO speeds included ! I know the 1968 105 C Combine cutter board and 1966 #10 Sickle Mower have same parts are interchangeable too and found that on farm equipment my dad and uncle had together! Plus my use 1963 MCCORMICK International B414 Loader tractor Desiel 40 hp had only 550 RPM PTO speed with #10 Sickle Mower to cut hay but hay super thick or got wet to much used 1968 International 624 tractor 60 hp with high speed on PTO to 1000 RPM also on #10 Sickle Mower was challenging on V shape field on farm of 45 acres! Rest were Rectangular or Square ones on fields acres !
