Cutting the Hay Field for the First Time. But I got hurt afterwards.

I am finally cutting our hay field for the first time. We planted this field last fall, after we amended the soil with lime, phosphorus, and nitrogen. The field has grown really well, except around the edges near the trees. I am using a new holland 451 sickle bar mower on a Allis Chalmers D17 tractor. This is my fist time cutting hay, so it takes me a while to make some adjustments and learn a good technique.

Well done on showing the reality of a farming life. Most 'city slickers' just don't realise that regardless of how poorly you may be feeling, the farm life goes on - animals must be fed and cared for, chores must be done and next season prepared for by making hay, tending gardens etc. Hang in there Evan - you are an inspiration!

Sorry you are hurt. That is a perfect stand of alfalfa. Don't hesitate to call your neighbor for help. Ask him and your friends and neighbors who you can call to put your hay and haul it for you if necessary. They might do it on shares? You are hurt don't make it worse. Tomorrow start getting your help lined out, don't wait until the last minute because they need time to make their plans. That is very good hay you don't want to waste it if it gets wet.

When you rake, pick the straightest/longest side and start doing rows, then do the “headlands” last in circles. This keeps you from running over windrows when turning around, and baling rows is better than circles.

I have roughly 100 hours of mowing experience, from what I have learnt is that you want to start with your tractor on the edge of the field and the mower in the field, mow the whole field and do the furthest headland last because there is going to be the most rocks and sticks in closest to the trees that can damage the mower so badly that you could spend all day repairing the mower and not be able to cut it all in the day.

ICE!! Apply ice, 15 min. on, 15 min off. When I fell and hurt my back the ER Doc said to apply heat, I did and if anything it got worse. When I saw my chiropractor he told me NO heat, do ICE. That's when it started to improve. NICE looking hay, by the way!

Welcome to the hazards of farm life ! I think when you get the mower "Fine Tuned" you will be able to mow lots faster. We used Farmall tractors to mow and always mowed in Foutth gear which depending on which tractor, was between 5 and 7 MPH. Best combination was A Farmall 400 in fourth gear at 7 MPH . You have a great looking hay crop. I just hope you can get help to get it bailed and stored. Good luck on thet back recuperation. Hope you don't have any permenant damage .
@wymershandymanservice9965
@wymershandymanservice9965 4 года назад
As a kid we had an IH 300 and the speed was dependent on how heavy the crop was but you ran the motor at PTO speed and normally 3 gear around 4 1/2 mph in a normal crop. Heavy materials you just slowed ground speed until you were cutting it all with out tear out. The bar needs to be pitched forward just a little and the lower you can cut the easier time you will have. The sweep on the end just needs to move the material in enough to clear room for the mower gearbox. The closer to the root of the plant the less it can lay over. Wore many a blister on my butt from those old seats in the hot Sun 😁 Enjoyed the content 👍👍. We all rush make mistakes only experience can teach some things. Be safe.

I have cut a lot of hay with a sickle mower. The first pass around the field needs to be in a clockwise direction. That will give you an indication of what is in the field and where to run the tractor on the next pass. After getting the first pass finished, turn around and go counter clockwise to mow out your tracks, then turn back around and do the third and following passes.
@w056007568
@w056007568 4 года назад
I would agree with this except for one small point. I would drive at least twice around the field simply because the mower cut is wider that the tractor width and it would mean you would have to drive on another piece of unmown crop. Further to this I would mow about 5 times round and then choose the longest straight run and strike off driving as reasonably straight as possible. At the other end turn left handed and drive back down over the swath you have just mown mowing a fresh swath. Continue doing this until the width of unmown crop on one side is less than the width of that which you have mown. Then mow right handed and mow one or possibly both blocks to completion. The main reason for this approach is when it comes to tedding, raking and especially baling long straight swaths make for a much easier driving experience.
@geraldskaggs3903
@geraldskaggs3903 4 года назад
@@w056007568 Oh yeah, you are correct, I didn't know the bar was 9'. It will take 2 passes clockwise. Loved the drone footage.

Round up is the gift that keeps on giving. I saw another u tuber use horse manure that had been sitting for two or more years only to kill everything because the horses had eaten hay that had been contaminated and that nasty stuff survived digestion and sitting and killed his garden.

Dad 2as bucked off a horse and broke his back. 7 surgeries through his life, but he still farmed.As he aged my brother and I did the farming. Instead of making those sharp turns and slowing down, cut past the end of the crop and do a circle or loop turn back to your left. Raise your bar to clear the cut hay. You make this loop at speed so make the loop big enough to manage the turn at speed. Come back into the uncut hay at speed with a clean bar. You will have even less clogging. No one says you have to fill the sickle. Take 3/4 or 1/2 swathes if you need to. Many of us smiled watching you run the machinery. We were doing this as kids. Thanks for a great video!

Farm accidents happen so easily Evan and that is why you should always have someone else around when using farm machinery. An injured back is a real downer for a farmer so you have my sincere sympathies. Hope it gets better soon. Evan, Just a thought, love to watch those grass/alfalfa fall in neat rows. Nothing like the "cut" an old sickle-bar mower gives! Your candor and humility (learning the job...) are refreshing! You may explore a "haybine" someday as they have an intake rake and a crimper behind which speeds curing. Enjoy your videos. Sorry 'bout yer back! (I know the feeling...)

If you start cutting so you are driving over your back swath you can watch for objects in the back swath. We make 3-4 passes around then go back to cut the back swath. The back swath is almost always the worse grass to cut because of sticks and over hanging branches.

Here in Holland we dont even bother with this ancient machines. We mow with a drum-mower combination (2,5m wide drummower on the front of the tractor and a 2,5m wide mower on the back) sometimes if we need to cut a lot we put in a 2nd tractor with a 3m wide disc mower/conditioner. That way we easily put down 40 acres an hour.

I've cut thousands of acres of hay in my life, when you start a new piece go clock wise like that if there's anything in the grass along the trees the tractor will run over it, also if you hit something on the outside pass and break something the rest of your hay is already cut

Just like a baler also-after a long winter it needs some time to 'stretch out' so to speak and get back into the groove. Our old John Deere square baler would always give Dad problems for the first couple of days and then run like a champion the last few days. Then park it back in the shed and repeat the process next year.

when you set the mower on the back of your tractor go to the left hand side an look along the cutter bar , the far end of the bar needs to be forward , see if theres an adjustment to pull the whole bar fowards so the far end cuts 1st , or it runs ahead , if its square with the tractor it will make it hard work for the machine , we used to use horse drawn mowers in Guernsey & if the tip of the knife wasnt forward a touch is really was hard work , an when i had to sit on the back if it jammed it would chuck you of the seat !!! have fun , love your videos , regards to you

Hi Evan sorry to hear u hurt yourself. Wishing you a speedy recovery. Would love to help u but I’m a bit far away here in Ireland 🇮🇪 From what I remember when using the sickle mower . The First pass the tractor is next to the hedge then make the hedge row ur last so u don’t damage your mower on branches. We cut the first few rows around the headlands and then straight line up and down the longest stretch of the field makes it easier for everything turning afterwards. If u have to do corners go straight of the end lifting the mower and drive a loop to left and come back around straight to the hay dropping it before cutting. That goes for lawnmowers too 😁. Also we had a wood board on the end of the mower for hay cutting ? Urs might be different. It was to throw the hay out of the way for the next pass .To unblock the mowers just lift it up while reversing keeping the mower running. Most times it would shake the hay off the bar .Hope some of the above helps 🤗 . Best of luck with ur hay making and ur farm life . Loved mine ! Ps enjoying ur channel and video/drone footage.

i am retired but still raise 20a of alfalfa/grass hay for a few cattle, and i now have my hay custom cut and baled in round bales. However, when i was a lot younger, i cut my hay with a 7 foot sickle NH mower, and later on used a 9 foot NH sickle mower. I baled square bales back then, with my late wife as the tractor/baler operator, with me stacking bales on the hay wagon following the baler. Anyway, always be sure to have sharp sickle blades, and if possible, remove the sickle blade bar after cutting, and keep the blade bar oiled and under cover until you need it for the next cutting. Also try to keep the mower bar clean and paint any exposed metal. I always enjoyed cutting, raking and baling hay with small square bales when i was young, but now all i can do is watch someone else cut my hay with a self propelled rotary mower conditioner, which cuts the field so very fast, compared to my old sickle mowers, and bale my hay into large round bales. Thank God i am still able to feed my cattle with the round bales. When i was in high school, late 60's early 70's, i worked for my farmer neighbors during the summer helping them to bale their hay, all square back then, no big round that i knew of yet. Watching your videos of you cutting your hay with a sickle mower, and raking and then baling your hay into small square bales, brought back many fond memories of my cutting and baling days, so thank you
