GRASS SO OVERGROWN I Couldn't Use A Regular LAWN MOWER

This all started when I got a call from another lawn care company to see if I wanted to mow this overgrown lawn. Of course I said yes. Arriving sight unseen I was amazed at how tall the grass was and I knew this was a big job and any zero turn would have trouble with this. For that reason I went and rented a tractor with a brush hog to get this job done.

Good deal, pro-tip here, lower your FEL, front end loader to just above the mower cut height when mowing in an area thats unfamiliar, this helps to avoid hitting debris, like trees, metal posts and rocks laying below the high grass.

@JohnFourtyTwo

Put some cows and sheep on it also. I had an uncle who raised sheep and he had big fields like this for them to graze on. They kept it very short like a golf course. Our cows would've loved grazing on this field, and seriously doubt we would have to worry about any of them finding a hole in the fence to escape and look for more food like ours did all the time.
@fixitquick79

Sheep or Cows for sure. Goats more like brush and brambles over grass. A few sheep would have that area looking like a park. If you want to clear backberries, brush, etc. Goats are the ticket for that.

Ran something just like this for 2 summers for a large scale home developer. I was doing this kinda stuff all day everyday to keep from getting city violations. Worst part of the whole thing was that there was always so many places to cut that I'd have to run the tractor a pretty decent speed and bring up the bush hog height to keep moving. Plus, you never quite knew what might be in the lots as they often got used by people to dump crap. Hit a half buried boulder once that I couldn't see. Broke off a large 2 foot section of blade which we never found and took a nice chunk out of the boulder.

Reverse is your friend in this sort of field, let’s you complete the final pass and not waste cutting width. Also, back and forth lines with a slight over pass works well when using a brush hog. Goes against the grain on the last pass that the inside wheel laid grass down on. If you do circles with a brush hog, you’ll notice a week or so later that the passes where the wheels were didn’t get chopped.

Yet another's advice was to use it down low to hit or protect the rest of the tractor and brush hog from these surprises. So which is it? For a novice bush hog operator you did a really good job. The efficiency of a tractor and bush hog is in long straight lines. The tail swing of the mower makes turning tricky, especially when up against a fence or building. Also, let the tail wheel carry the weight of the mower. The front skids will plow the ground dragging piles of grass and it also makes it hard to turn. As the video went on you caught on to some of these issues. Looks good.

@robertmyles9124
@robertmyles9124 Год назад
Way too tall and thick to bale as hay. It would take a week and a half or more after cutting to dry. Proper hay length needs only 2 to 3 days. And if it gets rained on after cutting then it's ruined and can't be used, which becomes substantially more likely with the increased dry time. That stuff is also too tall and thick to actually bale. It's too much material, the bales would come out so heavy and dense that they'd trap heat inside them, risking combustion.

@@SandrA-hr5zk - The problem with sheep is that if you don't sit there and move them around, they'll eat the grass to below the roots, and kill all the grass. That's the reason behind shepherds, and what also led (partly) to the Sheep Wars. In relatively arid areas, the sheep will turn everything to desert that will take years to recover. Even in well watered areas, grass takes a while to come back. Remember, sheep are descended from mountainous animals, with teeth designed to get as much of a plant that grows out of the rock as possible - leaving the roots still in the rock. In dirt, they have no such restrictions. However, if you have someone to watch them, sheep can give you the most fantastic lawns.

For 2024 I'm going to build a custom zero-turn mower with a bush hog rotary deck underneath it. John Deere told me that if I did build it that the bush hog deck would have so much centrifical force when the blade spins that it could possibly vibrate too much side to side.

Johnson grass is difficult to mow with anything, us a 12-foot bush hog and the tractor has to have power. Johnson grass used to be difficult to kill; now there are chemicals. The grass grows by seeds and rhizoids. Wind, birds, and animals easily spread the seeds, if you break a rhizoid, another chute will grow. It spreads in the field and surrounding areas and keeps growing. The grass if classified as an obnoxious and invasive grass. Equipment needs to be thoroughly washed down so the seed will not be carried to other areas. I have fought Johnson grass over a 100-acre field. I know what is like when you were mowing. An excellent video and the time-lapse sections are fantastic.

There is a tool that you're missing that would have made this job much easier- a GPS-enabled drone with a camera. That would afford you a better view of what's hidden in the grass. Not to mention the ones I'm thinking of being able to hold position and will give you a nice camera view of work. Or you can also put them into what's known as "follow me" mode and it will capture your mowing for you. If you want something simple to use most commonly you can use DJI, my experience is that for the best value/quality you might want to look at one of the higher-priced Yuneec drones.

Smart move with the brush hog!! Dont even want to think of the wear and tear on the Hustler Mowers, much less of the damage to your equipment. I'm glad that we don't have alot of Johnson grass down here. Be safe and see you on the next video!!!

A real farmer would have sprayed all that johnson grass not just mow it so it can take over. Tens of millions of dollars are spent every year by farmers to try to eradicate that invasive stuff. We farm a few thousand acres in Indiana and thank God we are able to control it. These guys are idiots.

You are doing an awesome job of mowing this farm owner's three acres and it is looking really good,I am eager to see the results of the finished results on the mowed acreage and the owner's property after you mow up by the owner's house and their yard area.Thank you for doing that for the owner's of this farm

I understand using the shredder, but I've mowed that with a zero turn. 3 passes with the deck all the way up and 3 with it down. First 3 passes are near idle speed. 2 acres took an entire day. We've used Bad Boys and are now using Kubota diesels.
@stxrynn
@stxrynn Год назад
That was my first job on the farm. I noticed you shred like you mow. Next time, cut that middle swath, then turn at the end and go about halfway to the fence and do the swath back. Then follow that race track pattern until you're done. That way you don't waste fuel cutting nothing at the turns. Dad would've lit me up the second go round for burning fuel to no purpose. Makes the job go quicker and keeps dad happy.

I suggest two things: 1. On tall grasses, lower your bucket in case of debris (6” or so from ground) 2. Bush hog should sit higher in the rear rather than level.

#3) Tighten your sway links. Your mower was fishtailing all over the place. Thats hard on lift arms.

Wow and super wow. Kudos to you for tackling such an immense lawn. Takes some patience and courage to get a tractor & brush hog, which handles so differently from a zero turn mower. But farmers typically use these on very large and bushy fields. It won't have the same quality of cut, but the power take-off efficiently transfers the 25+ hp from the engine vs drive belts to chop down the grass. Kubota is a good machine and these diesels are generally more economical than gasoline engines. Very well done and certainly a feather in your cap.

i've mowed thousands of hours with a brush hog in thick fields, sharp blades are key..I always had the drawbar at least eight inches higher than the rear wheels..Once you get the ground speed and P.T.O. output in sync, sit back and watch the Hawks find dinner..

I enjoyed watching the entire video, takes me back to the times when my parents owned a property that had a field of about 5 acres that I would take the tractor down there to bush hog the entire thing, which took about a good 3 days to get it all done. And I'm not going to lie, I got a little anxious watching you bush hog this lot since the grass was even taller than the tractor, and I thought you were going to hit something hard that might sheer the pin to the PTO shaft.
