I was diagnosed with moderate scoliosis at 8 and was in a brace by 9. It helped a little bit. But puberty grew me out of the brace after only 2 years, so the doctors went with just monitoring. I was told surgery was an option but I opted out. My hips and shoulders are noticeably uneven, but I deal with it. I'm in my early 30s now and have become increasingly more conscious of my posture as I've aged and will catch myself out of a slouch, especially when sitting at a desk.

It's funny you mention the Schroth method being dated. When I was having my scoliosis looked at they had these back braces that looked like they came out of the 1980's. A lot of the stuff did and this was the early 2010's. Never used one because I had finished growing at that point and ended up correcting my curve (62') with surgery, but definitely had conflicting feelings about it for years. I don't like that I can't arch my back anymore, I have this fixed position and while it helps maintain the illusion that I have great posture, I miss the mobility. Also like 80% of the nerves on my back were just... dead. for like 3 years. Most of them are back now but there's still random spots where if you were to touch me there it's really numb. A lot of my muscles felt atrophied after, especially around the back of the shoulder blade, idk what those ones are called. Reduce/remove movement from an area and your muscles will weaken too. One permanent change was I can't tell at all if my back is sweating. If my shirt sticks and tugs, then I notice, but if it's just wet? nada. I'm still fairly young so I'm sure there's other side effects I'm going to age into. I don't regret the surgery anymore, I think it was necessary given the angle and my quality of life improved immensely after. My curve was crushing my lower right lung and I could feel it when I was exercising. It wasn't expanding as much as it could've. Honestly made me worried many times I might pass out on my bike. But my curve was not the norm and if you're in that moderate-severe range you REALLY need to spend a lot of time thinking about it. Surgery is not a slam dunk and exploring other options is so worth it. Thanks for doing a video on scoliosis. So much bad information out there.
