I appreciated this information so much. I am very new to journaling and junk journals. I took apart a book prior to any knowledge of doing so. Of course I didn't do it exactly right but not too bad. I've learned about Edith Holden from another channel and I'm so impressed about who she was and how I should respect what she has left behind. I am 66 years old and still learning new things everyday as I watch you and other creators on You Tube. Thank you very much for guiding me in deconstructing a book neatly and respectfully.
g'day Doris it's lovely to meet you, you have picked a wonderful craft to get into, it might take a time to get used to all the methods but once you find the one that suits you, you'll love it! I am so pleased you love my method bc as you rightly pointed out I do love and respect the EH book so very much ♡☆🦋 crafty hugs Donna
I never took the time to know how a book is put together learning something new all the time, I appreciate the respect that you gave to this project, I’m a book lover, and I admire your craft. 📔📚
I appreciate that! Martha when one realizes it's more than words on a paper its a craft in it's own right, it changes everything, thx!♡ for tuning in and for your lovely compliment 🦋 cheers Donna
This is such a timely video for me Donna, I have been wanting to make a hard cover journal for some time but have not had the confidence to go ahead but I am sure with your guidance I will finally get it done!! Thank you so much for all the teaching and guidance you give to us.🙂
thanks you so much Helen, what a lovely compliment, this is what I love to hear so much, I want to see you be able to create confidently bc it is so rewarding, you got this!! 🙏♥︎♡☆🦋 crafty hugs Donna
When I first got Edith Holden books I never would have cut them apart. So I bought multiples. One to cut and one to save.BTW love that you are doing this !
I love how you mention respect of copyright and then cut it up!! But who doesn't cut things up and use them for other things, especially when it comes to journals, notebooks and diaries. We all do it! Though I admit I used to have to take a deep breath and send a prayer for forgiveness to the Gods of 'book binders' before I did it.
oh Menolly i do respect copyright ;-) but that's reserved for copying...lol and I like you, I say my little prayer to the craft gods over and over, because I then gotta cut up each page (oh no! giggles) after the initial dismantle (❁´◡`❁) 🦋 hugs Donna
Hello Donna, thank you for this very well explained tutorial. I learned a lot by just watching you. So much respect for the book is touching to see, but now it will have a new lease of life. I do have one Edith Holden book and will certainly have your video next to me when I attempt this. Many thanks and take care.
Hello Donna! I have been looking for videos going through this process in detail. Thank you for sharing! I am going to watch all these videos tonight. I have taken a book apart and made journals with them, but I decided it’s time to see how it’s done the correct way. Hugs, Marnel
hello Miemie, it's my pleasure I'm so happy that you found me Yay!! I know you will get the most out of your pages no matter which way you take them apart, it really helps having the pages removed from the seam folds, enjoy the process and i remind you to take your time ♥︎♡☆🦋 hugs Donna
It use to bother me taking books apart, but I've come to terms with it. Lol. I love making altered books. I'm working on my first junk journal now by recycling a book! Thank you for this series! 😊
Love that! Suzy, i guess it depends on the book once you have it in your hand too, i always say if you buy it to recycle it, you may as well go through with it because once its made they're so beautiful!♡ thanks for tuning in and happy crafting 🦋 cheers Donna
Thank you Donna for these tutorials. Please, please, please scan the Edith Holden papers for yourself and keep the originals for yourself. That way it's always there for you. Bless you.
I have a personal copy of Edith Holden's books and the remaining ones on my self are for my journals. I agree....there is nothing like a original book pages. I learned something new. I did not realize the front pages of the signatures are glued. Good to know when I begin my next journal series. Fantastic video!
You have quiet the collection then, isnt it the the best paper for creating! Yes they are very well made books they have a little extra glue in between, its great to be able to remove these pages as a double rather than cut them. Thanks for the compliment cheers Donna
Hello Donna! When I a first heard of junk journaling the mere thought of taking a book apart horrified me, but now I see it as breathing new life into discarded books and honoring beloved books. Thank you for this pedagogical tutorial ⭐️🌸 and for doing it with such care and reverence for the book 💗 Greetings from Therése in Sweden 🇸🇪
Gday Therese i know what you mean, my sons were brought up to never crease a piece of paper and to hold their books properly while they learnt to read. I was a bookbinder at 16 and i think that helped me a lot to understand and respect books the work that goes into how a book is made. I posted on instagram tonight "im recycling a book to make another book" love this beautiful craft cheers Donna
A very concise and clear video on how to take apart a cherished book. I have been making journals for a while now but learnt a lot from your demo. I use a seam ripper to take the stitches from the inside of the signature and find that easier than scissors. Thanks for taking the time to explain everything so well. You just might have given me the confidence to dismantle my Edith Holden book to use as well👍
Gday Maxine thx!♡ a lot Oh i'm glad you come across my tutorial then, FYI the soft cover is constructed different to the hardcover thanks for tuning in and happy crafting 🦋 cheers Donna
Using a Quick Unpick - a tool used by sewing machinists would be easier for me than a knife or scissors when cutting the stitching on the spine and each page, I think. I haven't had the courage to cut my Edith Holden books up yet ( I have the original and a one that is actually for use as diary decorated with Edith's illustrations) even though I bought them from Charity Shops for just that purpose. Think that I will have to buy another to cut from and keep one to look at. Hee Hee. I did appreciate you taking the time to show us how to deconstruct a book carefully and without 'damaging' it. You did it in the most reverential, respectful way I have seen so far. Thank you. Looking forward to the rest in the series.
Thx!♡ so much Mandy what lovely compliments, i love books as much as any one so its only fitting to do it taking care. Always a good idea to have a copy for show for sure lol thanks for tuning in and happy crafting 🦋 cheers Donna
Excellent! I have 2 books I found at 2 different used bookstores. One has the yellowish pages, the other has white pages that are aged. I’ve taken one apart but didn’t do as good a job. Will continue watching so I can learn more. Thank you for sharing the knowledge!
Gday Martha they're great books in persona for sure, the softcover book is bound differently to the hardcover. is your second copy the hardcover? if so you'll be right following my instructions thx!♡ thanks for tuning in and happy crafting 🦋 cheers Donna
I’m new to junk journaling. I loved your video of taking apart the Cherished Edith Holden Book. I have been looking in all the antique stores around here searching for a copy to call my own. You taught me so much about how to take the book apart, but I must say my heart was racing in my chest watching you. Thank you for sharing your video. Have a blessed day. ~Sheree Watkins
Glad it was helpful! Sheree thx!♡ keep looking your copy will turn up soon, I know what you mean about your heart racing bc i was on camera doing it lol thanks for tuning in and happy crafting 🦋 cheers Donna
I love learning from you! I'm going to have to ask sister if she has this book- I appreciate you teaching me the anatomy of a book and all the language that goes with it!
Hello from Alberta, Canada! That was a great video, Donna! Thanks! I have 2 Edith Holden hardcover books and although they're the same, I'm having trouble taking one apart! Lol! I will soon but I understand how hard it can be! Only been a subscriber for a couple weeks but am enjoying your channel immensely! So many videos to watch, hard to choose! Take care, Donna.
super Hilda! you are lucky to have 2 copies! I know how you feel about taking them apart for sure, I had to get mine apart as soon as i got it before i got attached or I wouldn't have done it lol happy creating BTW thanks for tuning in (❁´◡`❁) 🦋 hugs Donna
When I first started making journals it was difficult to cut books up and I agree there is nothing like the original pages....I now find that I enjoy the relationship I develop with the pages by creating something to enjoy and use...thanks for tutorial...going to become a subbie💕
Gday Jeannie thx!♡ for tuning in, i hope you become a subby I have lots more ideas to share with you :-) I know what you mean about the pages original is so much better than digi. happy crafting 🦋 cheers Donna
I was so excited to come across this video. I have 2 Edith Holden books and want to make JJ's with them. This couldn't have come at a better time. They are lovely and deserve to be showcased.
@@JunkJournalideas I thought I would use one at first, then if there is anything on the opposite side of the page I would like I have the second book to use. I will only gut one book though.
Fantastic tfs. Lovely to know you are using every last bit of this gorgeous book. I have 3 copies but haven’t had the courage to dismantle yet. This video gives me inspiration and the know how. Thank you so much ❤️❤️❤️
thats great Lisa thx!♡ I can understand, i block those thoughts and tell myself "why did you buy it"? to use it so i make sure i dive straight in before i change my mind lol thanks for tuning in and happy crafting 🦋 cheers Donna
Thank you so much for showing us this technique. I love her writing and I am getting into them even more. Must admit I had to hold my breath when you first cut into it, as I did when I cut into my first vintage wedding dress. After the first cut, the next cuts are fine....and the process is a breeze 😌❤️.
Gday Adele, i get what you mean, i think it was always easy for me bc i'm a traditional leather crafter and had to cut into very large leather hides worth heaps of $$, so cutting into books to repair or take apart was an easier process for me (luckily) Cutting up a wedding dress would be awesome!! i must keep my eye out for one now...thx!♡ for tuning in and happy crafting 🦋 cheers Donna
I'm so glad Michelle! It's a procedure that's handy to know, once you've done it, the only thing that changes it that glue!! diferent glues need more or less time to get open :-) happy crafting 🦋 cheers Donna
Me too!! Gday Anna, I have my parcel on the way so it wont be too long now before part 2 is out Yay! i can't wait to get into it thx!♡ for tuning in and happy crafting 🦋 cheers Donna
Oh my goodness, I have several of these book and finally decided to cut up the paperback one to use in my journals. It was tough to do but I did it. Lol . So glad I found your channel 🤗🤗
Wonderful! Kathy, the paper back one is bound different to the hard cover, but i'm so glad you got it done thx!♡ for tuning in and happy crafting 🦋 cheers Donna
This was great, I removed the block of pages from my Edith Holden book a couple of months ago, but didn’t separate all the signatures because I wanted to be sure to do it correctly. I want to use the cover, so I’ll be sure to watch this series. Now I can separate all the signatures. Thank you Donna!
Thank you so much Donna, that’s very very helpful and useful. And I’ve got no problem in gutting books 📚 to use for my own purposes. Stay safe and well too xxx Mags
Thank you for such an informative and easy to follow tutorial. I look forward to the rest of the series. Once upon a time I was horrified at the idea of cutting up books but have now come to terms with recycling and reusing. I am still hunting for copies of Edith Holden books at my local thrift shops. They are so popular they are getting expensive to buy and harder to find.
Gday Helen thx!♡ for your compliment :-) i will continue the series when my delivery arrives. I know what you mean about the first cut too. Here in Australia it would be rare to find a copy in a thrift shop but that doesn't stop me from looking lol, i visualize there being one sitting there one day. I hope that happens for you soonest. I picked this copy up off facebook market place...thanks for tuning in and happy crafting 🦋 cheers Donna
So cool, what a great tutorial. I have 2 of those in hard cover, one in english & one in french. The french one is much bigger, same pages but with a white border on all sides. Now I know how to take them apart without ruining them. Thanks!
Gday Jean thx!♡ a lot, that's a great idea, after seeing so many of you with or looking for 2nd copies i might grab a 2nd as well, we'll see when the time comes :-) thanks for tuning in and happy crafting 🦋 cheers Donna
I live Edith Holden books, mind u I did that with the papers not realising what they were lol really should pay attention lol.. Thank u for this, I have just got the Victorian lady diary off my daughter, who freaked out wen I started to chop it up, I don't think she realised why I wanted it and thought I didn't like it, it took me an hour of explaining to her why I did it lol xx
Gday Lottie, my husband says the same thing to me "pay attention" watch where your walking lol etc...when i buy my book i dare not say it was to cut up, bc i was not sure of their thoughts? thx!♡ for tuning in and happy crafting 🦋 hugs Donna
Hello Donna. Thank you so much for the video. I haven’t seen any of my other subscriptions show how to take apart a book. So nice of you to share this information. Bye for now from sunny California
Gday Cynthia I'm so glad I was able to help you with this, its a great series. I have to wait for the next step because the items are help up in shipping, but then its full steam ahead :-) cheers Donna
Thank you so much for this very informative video! I just got a copy of Nature Notes of an Edwardian Lady and I’ve read it cover to cover, but now I’m ready to cut it up for a journal and thanks to your video I’ll do it the right way!
i order some books but came as a recipe book but the other one was like the one you have still haven't got to tear it apart yet thanks for the information on how to do it.
terrific Erlinda, I haven't seen the recipe book that would be cool, It's much better to take it apart this way so that the pages stay all beautiful that they are, have fun with these books they are gorguss ♥︎♡☆🦋 hugs Donna
I copy and print all of the pages I want to use for my journaling just incase anyone doesn't want to cut theirs up and it lasts longer plus added bonus you can choose paper type
Yer if your selling or gifting it's best not to at all I don't sell my books it's all just for me. So if there is any copy right breach it doesn't leave my home.
Hi Donna I've just come across one of these books in a secondhand book shop I couldnt belive how lucky I was..if I cant find another one my hubby and I will take it apart to photocopy the pages.Sharon
Hi Sharon thats a great find i love hearing stories like yours, look up the copyright about photocopying the pages bc its copyright your not allowed to copy them. Your best to use the originals and get a 2nd copy if you want a book for ready pleasure cheers Donna
Thx!♡ for subbing! Irene it's an awesome book a second copy would be great hope you find one soon, thanks for tuning in and happy crafting 🦋 cheers Donna
Hello Cass, a seam ripper would work fine with removing the stitches in the middle of the signatures, but i wouldn't use it to cut the stitches between the glued signatures (but that's me). because its a different use, the stitches are so tight and glued together you would need to try and get the seam ripper point in and under the stitches and then push it to cut the stitch? the cutting area of a seam ripper is at least 1/4" away from the tip, so you would need to push it in a fair way, i dunno give it a try it might work? thanks for tuning in :-) hugs Donna
I've been hoarding my Edith Holden book for about 2 years lol. I want to use it so bad. But I know when I do it will be gone. Its such an awesome book. It wouldn't be so bad if I had a second book.lol decisions decisions..tfs
Gday Charlene i think were all guilty of that somehow, it time to get cutting, imagine all the beautiful things you could make, repeatedly thx!♡ for tuning in and happy crafting 🦋 cheers Donna
Donna, that you so much for showing this video. I have 2 of these books, one hardback, and one paperback. I have been hesitant to take either apart, but now have the confidence to use my pages in my journals. Will the paperback one come apart the same way? Thank you again.
Wonderful Paula! it helps a lot to see the actual book you need to use being done, no they are not the same, the hardcover has the signatures sewn in and the smaller one (paperback) is glued 🦋 hugs Donna
I have found some older copies of her book dating back to the 70’s but based on what I have read related to copyright in the US the book has to be 1923 or before to use it in Junk journals or altered books we would sell. Is that true for Edith’s books because she wrote it so long ago that it would qualify for the 1923 copyright? I so want to purchase one or more of these books to use in the journals I create, and it’s important to me to respect copyright. I love the care you took in taking the book apart. 💕
hello Nellie, copyright in each country varies I don't give copyright advice other than the basics because its such a rabbit hole and i'm no expert. Copyright can be extended by the family so you have to check everything when it comes to copying, that's the magic word copying. I'm with you about respect of all authors and artist where copyright is concerned, I always advise that you never copy, just use the original pages in your journal and all will be fine. Thanks for your compliment about taking the book apart, I really feel it was so precious and wanted to keep the pages double sided. enjoy you EH book when you get it, you will love the paper and the illustrations, ♥︎♡☆🦋 hugs Donna
no i don"t Donna i"m not going tu cut it. If i run into it again then i use the worst. and yes the real is better than a copy. thank you Donna for the clear explanation.
I learned a lot watching you do this, thank you. If I wanted to sell some wonderful books to use for junk journals, where would you suggest I do that so that junk journal makers would see what I had? Thanks.
Gday Molly thx!♡ a lot, are you in Australia? a good place to start is Facebook Market place or Ebay, etsy seem to have fee's, taxes and shipping costs to be concerned about. There are also some facebook groups that are junk journal groups that have sister groups that are for selling, they are perfect bc only people that JJ are there so your audience is perfect for you, let me know what country your in, i'll see if i can offer some further direction :-) thanks for tuning in and happy crafting 🦋 cheers Donna
Hello Donna, great video and great demonstration to separating the signatures. What do you do with the pages from this book after its has been dismantled? Do you use it in a journal for yourself, a gift or can you sell the junk journal you made (with the Edith Holden pages in it). They are beautiful books. I have a couple and have yet to cut it apart...hugs from Arizona.
thanks Cheryl, i use the pages to fussy cut some of the images out, i also cut some of the versus and words out and glue them into my junk journals I will also use a page or 2 in amongst other pages of journals that I am going to make, both for personal and for sale ♥︎♡☆🦋 hugs Donna
Gday Jennifer you sure can, i got my hard copy from Facebook market place from a private seller, the soft cover one was from an online bookstore word of books thx!♡ for tuning in and happy crafting 🦋 cheers Donna
Gday Jan thx!♡ get onto facebook market place and type in the search edith holden books, also search online at ebay and amazon. if you are a member of any facey groups that are dedicated to selling put a wanted post up. Every time you go near a goodwill pop in and check the bookshelf thanks for tuning in and happy crafting 🦋 cheers Donna
I think I held my breath from time-stamp 5:45 to 8:15! I think of the comments that I read "Therése Wallentin" stated it best when she said, "the mere thought of taking a book apart horrified me, but now I see it as breathing new life into discarded books and honoring beloved books." Thank you for a terrific tutorial on dismantling a book.
ha ha I hope you didn't lol I had a few comments of horror, but all works out in the end, this book deserves respect and is so beautiful re0-used (❁´◡`❁) 🦋 hugs Donna
I'm so excited! I just got a hardback at a sidewalk sale at a library for $1.00! I can't cut it up yet...it has to marinate on my shelf for a while! Lol! Thanks for all the helpful hints. 🤗 I just subscribed.
Hi Nancy nice to meet you!! $1.00 what?!! that's amazing good on you and i can understand why you want to hang onto it for a while, its a precious book for sure enjoy it for as long as you can. TᕼᗩᑎKᔕ for the sub ♥︎♡☆🦋 hugs Donna
Gday Joanne thx!♡ I'm held up bc some goodies in transit, as soon as they arrive i will put the 2nd video out, and then they all come out one after the other, thanks for tuning in and happy crafting 🦋 cheers Donna
Hello Sharon thanks for leaving your comment but there is no giveaway on this video you need to pop on over to video part 2 to leave this comment to be entered cheers Donna
Gday Mimi wow 4!♡ there's a lot of pages in each copy they last ages, you'll be right for a while thanks for tuning in and happy crafting 🦋 cheers Donna
