My very first RU-vid video. I slogged through...
Cutting out GR Research X-LS Encore speaker cabinets on ShopSabre Pro 408. Also my first time doing that! Panel being cut is West Fraser Ranger Board Platinum, a high density MDF.
In an effort to make this a little more watchable I edited the original to add music over the noisy parts and adjust sound levels. Learning as I go!
If you'd like to give the flat pack a go, email me at carbidewing@gmail.com
Speaker cabinets are GR Research X-LS Encores. I'm a long time customer and highly recommend them.

Thanks for the video! I'm one of the rare people that would rather listen to the machine. You have an awesome shop!

I've always wondered how this was done. Thanks for making a video of this process.

Enjoy your videos, was thinking about getting one of your xls flat packs, then was wondering if I could try banging one of these together from scratch. Am dithering a bit. I was wondering how to make that tweeter countersink. I have not seen a router bit that wide with a bearing. My router experience is lacking.

Really nice video, thanks for sharing. Im considering doing some GR speakers that ill contact you later on, but just wondering if you could make the speakers cabinets of anything else beside MDF? like real wood or the routers wont work with it?

Router will cut most anything short of metal. All things considered, Ranger MDF is more consistent in thickness, density and flatness than plywood or solid timber. This affords more precision when cutting. Plus it has really good sonic damping qualities. I don't have any love for the stuff, but its virtues are hard to ignore.

Peter Rawlings Hi Peter. How do I order the flat packs?

How would one go about placing an order? Also, ever do any of the A/V-3 floor stander cabinets?

Steve, you can contact me directly. carbidewing@gmail.com I've built several GR Research Designs. Currently only offering this as a flat pack. In time there may be more.

Hi Peter - as you know I'm planning to get a UK CNC company to make the XSLS and I want to know how to design the rabbets. Help!

Keith, it's more than I can realistically cover in a comment. Briefly, one would need to design in some CAD software (I use Aspire) that can generate cut files for CNC router. FWIW, that's not a "once and done" proposition. CNC machines differ in their precision, tooling is somewhat variable and even material being cut can change things. There will be need to prototype to gauge end result. I'd suggest it would be easier to either DIY or hire someone to build for you using original plans, unless you're willing to pay for the development process. I sometimes use SketchUp to explore ideas visually, but it's not really a good place to start for interpretation into CNC cut files.

Hi Peter do you take orders to do cnc cuts? was looking to build my own Dynaco A25's. I don't have a lot of wood working equipment. That machine you have is awesome. Wondering if you can give me a price to cut boxes for me? I can send you dimensions.

Is there a way that you may be willing to sell your CAD files for the router? So I can do those cuts on my local available CNC machine? I am in Ukraine, and it isn't very cost-effective to ship from USA.
@carbidetooth
@carbidetooth 3 года назад
In a word, no. Although CNC is cool, it's really not necessary to build speakers like these. Long before I had CNC capability, I built a good many speakers. This might be helpful: www.audiocircle.com/index.php?topic=150120.0

@@carbidetooth thanks for the response. So, if I understand correctly, there is no way to get the source files for XLS-Encore flatpacks for the CNC from you, even by paying for them the price that you may be specifying? Guess, I'll have to design them myself from the cabinet measurements. My friend here in Ukraine has a furniture business, and has a CNC router at his manufacturing facility, that is why I thought it's a great idea to cut it straight there. But thanks anyway.
