Grinding off and removing a stubborn stuck CV Joint which was the cause of a knocking noise - Land Rover Discovery 3 & 4.
All the normal methods of joint removal failed, so I had to resort to grinding the CV joint into several parts in order to remove it from the shaft.
I hope you find it’s interesting and useful. Let me know in the comments.

I hope you enjoy and find the video interesting and useful. It was a stubborn *****. Please comment and thanks for watching. You may also enjoy watching this video: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-MMa8ffN2G24.html Making a sliding hammer to remove inner CV joint.

I did it your way. Hammering it off just felt wrong and the joint was 27 years old. Using the chisel was a key tip. Thanks.

Hi Ken, pleased you sorted it and hope my video helped. To be honest I've removed plenty of CV joints over the years and a well place whack with a hammer has usually done the job, even while still on the vehicle. This one was extra stubborn. I have just checked your channel and have say your father in law has done a sterling job on the RV12. It looks beautiful little aircraft, which I bet is fun to fly. Great first landing as well.

Tip for future diy'ers:never put it under pressure first before trying to hammer it of, it locks the ring in.

Great tip Francis, for those future diy’ers and usually it does work like that. “Hang on though did you mean me 😉.” It’s fine if you did 🙂. I’ve replaced hundreds at least in my career and this little blister was a particularly awkward one and the first I’ve ever had to remove in this fashion. Hope you enjoyed watching. 👍🙂

Proper heating should do the job despite remaining grease.

Hi, heating wouldn’t really do the job in this case. The inner part of the CV wasn’t seized on the shaft, the circlip would not free from it’s groove. This was in me experience the easiest and quickest way to do the job. I hope you enjoyed the video.

@@EverydayWorkshop well, then you would just need a sledge hammer and a one good hit to undo the clip. You can find videos many mechanics do that. I was also surprised at first...

@@agwatcher the video doesn’t show how much hammering I actually gave it. That bit of hammering is basically for the video. Due to the camera proximity couldn’t give it a big swing. In hindsight I should’ve shown the 14lb sledgehammer I was hitting it with 😊. Thanks for your comment.

@@EverydayWorkshop yes the trick is that any little angle would not undo the clip evenly. You need exactly one good pulling (sledge hammer) hit which is absolutely perpendicular to the plane of the clip. So all parts are in air, not fixed anywhere. As I said, you can find videos on YT how mechanics do this in a few seconds.

@@agwatcher I’ve lost count of the amount on CV joints I have replaced in over thirty years in the motor trade. And I can count on one finger how many I’ve had to remove in this way 😄

They are experts at repairing anything, while wearing flip flops. 😁 That aside I have a great admiration for there work ethic and ingenuity. 🙂👍

@@EverydayWorkshop I agree but my company ended up with a remanufactured bearing, cost in excess of £2 million who it caused gearbox failure.

Yeah if they are doing it to keep their own gear running all well and good. But I see your point.
