Dear Mr. Kilmer, I watch your videos regularly and really love them. I am facing a peculiar problem with my car which is just 1 year old. While accelerating at low rpm, I can hear clunking sounds coming from below the engine bay on the driver side. Also when the car hits bumpy roads and there's rhythmic bumps there's clunking simultaneously. My car service people could not find the problem. I changed the motor mount, but the problem persists. what can it be? I feel like I'm driving a 10 year old car with the irritating clunks.

I think this is the 2nd cv video you have posted but it's great to see it done on another vehicle. Did this on my car and made a world of difference. If suggest putting a new seal on if you have the axle out since it's cheap and can get damaged when removing the old axle

A trick I used on SOME cars, might not work for all cars with CV joints, is to stick the clip in a position where it's not engaging but makes it easier to just slip in place once the new axle is installed. Also, sometimes need to be careful with the transmission seals on certain cars like the Ford Focus; which turned into a nightmare because we took it to a technician who gave it to the new kid who didn't put the seals in the freezer for a bit to shrink them, and scratched the inside of the seal port during install, causing a leak. Next time we did them ourselves and saved a lot of headache.

Side note for this video...every CV axle I've ever replaced needed a little persuasion when coming out of the transmission. Using a good pry bar, wedge the pry bar between the transmission housing and the CV housing and "pop" them out. On this car in this episode, the inner axle spindle has a C-clip that keeps it from falling out. Also if you live in an area where you get snow SOMETIMES the outer axle CV shaft will "freeze" itself in the steering knuckle. Some penetrant and an impact hammer with a point bit (sitting in the center of the axle shaft) usually does the trick. Happy wrenching everyone! -Bandito Brothers

Great video. I did this exact job on my 02 Camry just a few months ago. That clip is annoying as all hell to get back into position. It looks deceptively easy in this video but every time you think it's seated, the opposite side pops out. My hand actually slipped on the pliers after what must have been 30-45 minutes of fighting it and it magically seated correctly just by accident.

well two mistakes made , never hit on the bottom of a tie rod end like that , loosen the nut and hit on the knuckle part of the unit that the tie rod end goes threw and in the end never just tighten the axle nut, always torque it to spes. that is if you care not to replace the bearing soon, just a couple observations. Hope they were helpful.

I have a 2002 Accord. It has more of a high pitch squeal noise when driving. It's more profound when turning, especially without gas applied. If I'm giving gas & turning, the noise isn't as bad. I would a their to half the sound isn't there. I had one guy tell me it was the wheel bearing (which I just don't see how) & another guy tell me it was the cv axle joint boot.. so I don't even know what to go with now

So for AWD vehicles, is there a rear axle shaft and 4 total cv joints? And would you need to replace it too?

@scottykilmer I think I need this for my 2006 Lexus is250, but it’s way too expensive for a shop.

I'm not sure if I have a CV joint problem or a transmission problem on my 99 Honda Odyssey. Some of the symptoms identified in the video BUT when I put the vehicle up on a hydraulic lift and put it into drive giving it gas, only the passenger wheel rotates, the driver side makes a major rubbing sound and some clanking. I didn't see any CV joint boot failures. The car drives great down the road other than the loud humming (when I go around right turn cloverleafs, the sound goes away almost totally). Could this still be a CV joint?.

I know mechanic shops gotta make money but they were trying to charge me 800 dollars to do it. I got the part for 80 and did it myself in an hour and a half.

Scotty, do you recommend buying OEM or aftermarket parts? Are aftermarket parts more durable/heavy duty?

I have a 2011 Scion Xb that makes a loud scratching noise in the front passenger side. I thought it was the brakes but they are new. I also thought it was the dust plate. What can be causing this? Sounds like something rubbing together.

Hey scotty I had the same problem car would shake around 50 to 62 mph exactly. Mechanic told me it was the axle I replaced it and 2 weeks later the shaking came back. Do you think the axle was a bad defect from the manufacturer ? If so give me your opinion. It's a 2008 honda crv 2.2 or 2.4L I vtec.

Scotty, I got a 1996 Honda accord, 4 cylinder, non VTEC & it over heats. I put engine coolant with water but it still overheated. Now it won't start. A thick lube that connects to the coolant and goes to the engine looks like it was sucked out. Instead of being thick it got thinner.?

Scotty I have this same exact sound in my 2002 Grand Cherokee (has quadra drive). i only get it when i turn to the right but if im going straight or turning left its perfectly fine. I tried replacing both the CV joints already and i still have this sound....m seriously lost at what it can be now.

I have 2004 toyota sienna. steering wheel vibrates at 70 mph. Noticed that driver side strut spring is broken. So put new struts in the front and still feel the vibration. I don't know what to do. Also felt that front tires are really warm after normal drive.
