This video walks through how to do a proper drain and fill on your 2010+ Subaru Outback CVT transmission. I will list some of the key points below along with some links to products used.
Key points:
- open fill plug before drain plug
- Fill about four quarts with funnel and hose and then pump the rest in
- Run the car for about 15 minutes ideally in neutral and run it through PRND several times
- CAUTION: exhaust and transmission will be very HOT! Take caution when putting the fill plug back in!
- IMPORTANT: Install the fill plug WHILE the car is running, because fluid will drain out from the gears if you shut the car off.
Products used:
-CVTF fluid - www.subarupart...
- Hand pump - www.amazon.com...

Depending on year and CVT model, fluid level is to be measured in P with engine idling. So when the engine is off, the fluid level will rise causing it to overflow when you pull the fill plug.

No need to worry, they CVT carries extra fluid when not running, that's why the overfill hole has fluid coming out.

Thank you for the informative video. Looks like your next video should be on ball joints. The tires on that car are very worn on the inside.

Next time just measure quantity you drain out, then fill back with same quantity, if just drain and fill. If you do transmission flush that's when go thru long process of shift thru gears, topping of, temp check 95-113, then drip and replace fill plug.

If we put back the same amount of fluid as we drain it out at the begining then do we have to go thru the steps fill and check? And why you have to pump at the second fill ( the funnel won't work at this time)?

You should be able to use the same amount you got out, assuming none leaked out before. You can certainly use the funnel. It was just easier to check the level I think to use the pump? Not sure.

This car I bought for $3750. Had 200k miles on it when I bought it. It now has 228k miles, original CVT transmission no issues!

I put a socket with a breaker bar on it and supported it by the floor or the car where the battery goes, and turn the key to crank over the engine slightly, just enough to get it to pop loose.

with 200K miles on your Subie, have you done a timing belt change?
@outdoorsurvivalshop8986
@outdoorsurvivalshop8986 3 года назад
The timing belt was changed around 100k miles, and I changed it along with pulleys and tensioner as soon as I bought the car with 200k miles.

@@outdoorsurvivalshop8986 Good move, 200K is a boat load of miles. How long did the timing belt process take you? I'm thinking of tackling mine but my 2011 OB is the only vehicle we own at this time. Wondering if I can knock it out in one day?
@outdoorsurvivalshop8986
@outdoorsurvivalshop8986 3 года назад
@@avidskier73 if everything goes well, and you have all the parts and tools, you could probably do it in one day. Biggest issue is getting the crank pulley off and back on. Also, be careful tightening down the water pump, as those threads strip out easily. How many miles are you at? I suggest the AISIN timing belt kit. You want to replace the tensioner and pulleys too which comes in the kit.
