I thought Cyan’s statements on Riven’s 25th being folded into next year made perfect sense, tantalising as they were. Look how much work is going into Firmament! Looking forward to it and future news.
Thank you so much for the Firmament clips. Despite your miss givings about releasing these early shots, for me, it has ramped up the excitement for the release. Well done and continue the great work.
I discovered Firmament today. I'm really glad, because your games are among my favorite ones. These samples look really good, and I can't wait to play your game on my PS5 (and my PSVR 2, when I'll have one). Obduction was a lot of fun, and I'm sure Firmament will be the same. Thanks for your hard work. "Reflexion / Puzzle" games are way too rare.
I just played the Myst themed mini golf course and it was really well done. I could tell the people who worked on it were 100% Myst fans based on the music, references, and general style. I'm hoping for a Riven course at some point.
Great! Erik the clips are really fenomenal! Cannot wait to enjoy Firmament. But I wait with pleasure knowing what Cyan is capable of. Thank you and keep the marvelous work!!!
The CG models in Myst '21 were disappointing. The rest of it was absolutely spectacular, but the character models... ugh. I physically flinched when I saw the imager by the dock, I'm not kidding. So getting the classic video back was a must.
Firmament is looking great! As someone who has worked in game development, I understand how non-trivial even the smallest task can be, so take your time, and can't wait to play it when it comes out. 😊
I know that lots of fans are quite annoying about Riven and Starry Expanse. And of course we want to see new games, I am a Firmament backer myself and thoroughly enjoyed Obduction. But we insist so much because Riven is such a highly polished, fine masterpiece, and it would be a pity that, while every single other game gets remastered time and time again, the jewel in the crown is left forgotten, stuck with the technical limitations of the time. Don't get me wrong, the graphics are still outstanding today, except for being all pre-rendered (so no free-moving exploration or VR) plus they are extremely low resolution for today standards. Anyway, our insistence about Riven, is because this Masterpiece marked us growing up, even more so than Myst (and I spent hours mesmerized looking at Myst screenshots on PC magazines before I was ever able to play it). It deserves a remake. Maybe a kickstarter is due for this project, once Firmament is done?
"...our obligation is to the backers of the Kickstarter first and foremost but, mainly it's pc and console players" Yes! Well I'm so glad they are staying loyal to kickstarter backers, keeping that the priority and not bringing lower performance platforms in just because it is popular. That is what we paid for many years ago.
I have two games (among others) on my Steam wishlist, Myst VR and Walkabout Minigolf (although I bought that recently). Then they come out with Myst Walkabout Minigolf. This pleases me. Also cool to see Rand somewhere in the UK countryside (can tell by the road signs). Goodness knows where though, in one of the national parks?
They have cassettes. And the cassette for the book of atrus has full voice acting and background music. I wish someone would just upload them to RU-vid
Man all I really want is a remake of Riven and those physical Myst books right now. Also, it was a big mistake not having the classic video mode available on release.
It's really cool that you guys call internal areas as "ages"... really cool callback to the myst series even if they aren't connected to myst. Not like maps/scenes/levels... ages... it's really cool.
I completely understand the complexities and difficulties associated with developing a game like Firmament. Pandemic certainly didn't help matters. Disappointing we didn't get to hear the news about Riven VR due to the "technical difficulties". I'm excited to hear the books are getting attention again. I actually have the Book Of Ti'ana as well as the Book Of Atrus in hard copy. I've heard there was going to be a fourth book years ago but maybe that was just a rumor. Congratulations on your Webby award and your Apple store awards. It's nice to know that you're NeverEnding efforts are getting noticed. I had been waiting for a Myst remake for years now I'm glad to see it finally came to fruition. Can't wait for Firmament it looks to be an experience like no other.
Love will be the deciding factor that will make this run. Love what you do every day. Love for those you care about and express that Love in this work. I know this will be phenominal. Not average not good not great but phenominal spectacular brilliant a stunning mastery of art every detail of every charcter will showcase an authentic well put together story line the depth of the side characters will match the vast length and height of the world. It will have a width that reaches vast audiences. Today is only today and today is only the start of a masterpiece. The expression of what is inside you a divine place in your heart. Firmament.
"I've never been to Myst Island." SACRILEGE! Get this clown off stage, how'd he even get into the building?! (lol) In all seriousness, fun presentation. Congrats again on the award, and looking forward to more Firmament news when it's out!
With the skill of the Starry Expanse team in re-creating lost assets & upscaling recovered assets for the upcoming VR Riven remake, I think they'd do quite well for at least getting the base Uru set up, with full multiplayer & path of the shell later down the line. Honestly would be interesting as a sort of echo for the original development for Riven & Uru
What the starry expanse project developed (the camera matching pipeline) has nothing to do with Uru. Uru is real time 3D. They could just convert the maps to Unreal engine maps, but then the geometry would be too blocky and the textures low definition.
@@johnny_eth I was more talking about how they had been rebuilding Riven from scratch for VR before getting picked up by Cyan, not so much their current roles within Cyan.
I am SO happy seeing progress on firmament!!!! I'm a diehard fan of the mystlike games and not having any updates on this game was killing me, even with the flaws this footage excites me cause I see how beautiful it's going to be. Please make sure this is going to run well on the HTC Vive too please, obduction was unplayable and it broke my heart.. 😢 (hardware was state of the art, that's not the problem unfortunately)
So REBUILD IT!!! Don’t port it. Build it from the ground up. Uru is what VR was invented for…traveling worlds with a library of Myst books. Help the effort to grow VR. Myst was a good start, but this Uru is social media the way it was meant to be. Help shape the Metaverse. Make it big. HUGE. VR Chat looks like crap, but it’s the most popular app on the Quest 2. This would be infinitely bigger (and prettier). Will it be expensive? Hell yeah! Will it be a huge undertaking? Hell yeah! Will we buy it? I’d sell a kidney to have Uru VR. It’s why I bought a Quest 2. Myst proved that it can be done. So do it. You’re gonna make your money back just with all the DLC you can build right into the app.
I'm a Myst fan, but I think Cyan have sorta underestimated the impact Riven had on many people. A Riven remake for a 2022 audience would do the whole world a huge favor.
Thanks for clarifying (re-clarifying?) that Cyan uses ‘_____age’ in the file names because it’s an old habit Firmament already looks Myst-like and people will absolutely dig through the code as soon as the game drops looking for hidden lore, finding something like ‘glacial_age’ in the files is gonna confuse a bunch of people into thinking this game is Myst-adjacent Instead we can point here and be like “Nah, they just do that as a habit, not a Myst game”
They bought back the rights to both Exile & Revelation several years ago, and subsequently re-released new versions of all games with updated compatibility 👍🏻
@@Hendy1985 But a VR Exile would be so great everyone says it wasn't the Quintessential MYST because it wasn't made by Cyan but I think it was stunning and beautiful. None the less would make for a awesome port to VR!
@@MalinaM1 if we’re talking about dream ideas, I always wished they would have used FMV’s rather than animated models for the characters in Myst V, so I would love for them to add those to it! But being realistic, here is what I really want to see: - Rime added to Myst Remake - Riven Remake - Myst III, IV & V ported to current gen consoles (including Xbox) Of course there are other things that would be great in the future like other remakes & a sequel & smaller stuff like I mentioned, but the list above is what I really hope for as a minimum 🙏🏻❤️
With the screenshot feature coming out at pretty much the same time as the hand tracking feature, somehow it seems like they missing putting in a way to trigger the screenshot/note-taking via hand tracking.
Yeah, we know Riven VR is being done for 2023 (the starry expanse project was absorved into Cyan in 2020). But my personal wish is for remastered upscaled Myst 3 and 4 versions. I love those games as well but their resolutions do not scale up that well in high definition screens.
Where is Rand Miller? I see English writing "Telephone", I see a yellow number plate in the background. Should be the UK. I saw a van with the company name SINCLAIR(?) drive by. There are ads for "The Lady Boys of Bangkok". They had a stops in _Brighton_, _Yeovil._ and were preparing for _Newcastle Upon Tyne_ at that time. There is a satellite dish on the right house. Since satellites orbit the equator, it would suggest the camera is facing North, but the shadow angle tells a different story. This is recorded in the morning hours with the camera facing South. There are also very high trees around that city. Maybe the van was from Colin Sinclair Motors in Newcastle Upon Tyne. Yeah, that's my guess. They have vans like that.
Continue dreaming, even though Unreal Engine supports Linux out of the box and ScummVM binaries are available on Linux, they never took the minimum effort of releasing Obduction Exile for Linux. All they do is scamming us with another relaunch of the same game(s).
@@EldunMcLayan Yup, especially the ScummVM releases would be such a no-brainer. Fortunately we can help ourselves in that specific case. ;) I'll buy VR Myst and/or Firmament it if and when there's a native Linux release. There are more games and other things in life to do other than that. But maybe someday it will happen as it has for other games and software. Even though we're still in for the long game, I think we're at a point where we can choose from a large enough library of games already that run natively under Linux and don't have to buy non-supported games in the hope that it'll run with Wine. Though I must admit there are a few older games where the Windows version actually runs better on modern Linux using Wine than the old native version. In any case, I haven't had to boot into Windows for a long time now and that has noticeably improved my general mood :D Have a nice day!
Myst coming to PlayStation has always been a question in the back of mind that I never ask because I assume the answer is always no. Is there hope at least for bringing the Myst and perhaps it's sequels to PlayStation consoles?
I just want the Cyan games on PSN again lol. I just beat Obduction so I’m in the mood for Myst again. I backed firmament and I’m excited for it but I want something to play until then 😬.
Kickstarter for new Myst Uru Online content would be nice. Seems to be the unwanted child at the moment. Would be nice to see all the podiums in the museum and the library filled with linking books.
Myst Online: Uru Live (again), a.k.a. "MOULa" is now in the community's hands. You can chat with the community and its developers here in Discord: discord.gg/cyanchat
Probably yes, but are we willing to delay it even more? I think getting it as polished as possible with the current engine is better. I agree on quality first... But I want to play it too!
@@georgH yeah i want it out as soon as possible too but man. Unreal engine 5 really changed the game when it comes to graphics and usually with these first person puzzle games, the graphics are a major feature and draw. So when this game comes out and it has worse graphics than some action games on unreal 5 its kinda lame. It looks fine enough but unreal 5 would really give this game a facelift.
@@007nikster2 > when this game comes out and it has worse graphics than some action games on unreal 5 its kinda lame Yeah, I thought the same when UE5 was presented and saw all the potential, but if it were my project, I think I would go ahead with UE4...
@@007nikster2 I mean, MYST and Riven were something never seen before in terms of image quality, and now other games have surpassed that, I get the feeling too
you didnt handle the riven question well. Im sure you have your reasons. People followed The Starry Expanse's project for years and then silence when you took them on board. Crumbs or assurance that youre looking after their project would be good. At the moment it feels uncertain, even if its not. The silence after so many years of community hype is nerveracking.
@@catseye10000 I genuinely dont believe so. The Starry Expanse team are passionate and Cyan are known to be passionate about the Myst games. No other company that i know of keeps re developing their old games. Cyan taking on Riven would have been out of wanting to help get the project over the line sooner. The jolting switch from open info to no info, and then joking about it, is the bit i think theyve mis-judged in this instance. Take it as that though... a mis-judgement. Cyan love Riven and wouldnt have helped out the Starry Expanse project if they though it didnt have legs.
It is fast approaching half a decade since the original beg to pre-purchase Firmament. I know of several purchasers who are now dead and, their investments are gone. Shame !
I'm pretty sure at this stage you guys either hate or are really embarrassed by Riven for some reason. We get a billion and one updates, remakes and re-releases of Myst but Riven just keeps getting ignored.
What are you talking about? They're very clearly teasing it. They know we know about the Starry Expense, but I guess they just don't feel like they're quite ready to announce a release date yet, especially with a couple of other projects that they wouldn't want to overshadow right now (Myst and Firmament). If there were any serious issues with the project they wouldn't have joked about it.
@@mystman1210 Maybe but to me the joke fell really flat. It would have been better to not say anything at all than that tacky "technical issues" thing they slapped us with instead. It's been 25 years and they haven't more than the absolute bare minimum to keep it working. That doesn't say "we care" to me.
@@vcatkiller I guess I can see that. I suppose it'd be easy for them to not realize how it would come off to us when they know exactly what's going on behind the scenes. It's probably hard for them to gauge teases like that from the fans' perspective. Either way though, I still think there's a good chance we'll be able to play Riven in VR next year.
I'm sorry to say this but this age is not impressive to me at all. Small industrial complex surrounded by mountains. This could be Romania or Mongolia. What happened to the creative energy that went into ages like Spire or Riven?
