Doom Retro Battles involves several Doom and Doom 2 battles, a fight club or battle simulator of sorts, between various units and unit compositions, each with different variations such as weapons, numbers, difficulty levels like Ultra-Violence and Nightmare, etc.

It isn't really all that much of a change, either. The delay in attack is reduced or eliminated, thrown projectiles move faster, pinkies and specters move faster, and I think there are some small damage and health tweaks... not to mention the respawning. Relatively minor changes that add up to a massive spike in difficulty. Oh, and ammo pickups are doubled, but that's not relevant here.

The fact the cyber demon even lost the 1 Vs 20 on nightmare shows that you don’t need so many imps to kill the cyberdemon on nightmare. If spread out they win, if clumped they lose.

​@@Prinygod Same holds true for the Imps. They don't waste so much time running into rockets, they pretty much turn into fireball turrets, with sped up projectiles to boot. Not what you wanna see when you're a big, fat target like the Cyberdemon.

@@OfficialBulldozerStudios yes but that's not ironic, you would expect them to throw more fireballs on higher difficult, and they are not dodging the rockets on the easier difficulty like the cyber demon does, because the rocket splash kills them anyway.

@@Prinygod Well, now that IS ironic: When Imps are more deadly than a Cyberdemon ( or several of them ) on the hardest difficulty. Makes me wonder what would happen if 10 Cyberdemon's, 100 Chaingunners and 100 Inps on Nightmare went at it. The Cyberdemon's ain't winning that one, I guarantee you. If the fireball spam doesn't kill them, the endless hitscan attacks will.

Cyberdemon fights are always determined by two factors: whether or not the opponents block each others' shots and how eager they are to engage in hand to hand combat. The cyberdemon always seems to excel when a wave of stupid enemies get within splash damage range and act as shields.

Which is always in UV level..in Nightmare they all open up and wipe out whoever they are shooting at. I have to think it has to do with their "rangefinding" being better on Nightmare.

@@projektkobra2247 I don't think there's any difference in range finding between difficulty levels. In Nightmare, all enemies take half as much time to lock on to the player, and their projectiles move twice as fast. However, the Cyberdemon's rockets are the same as the player's rockets, so while it fires rockets more often, the rockets themselves don't move any faster.

@@colBoh -Watched all these vids..and on UV they all walk towards the enemy before opening fire..in Nightmare..they start shooting right away...the only explanation is they can "see" the opponent at at greater range, then open up. Just what it looks like to me. Have a good weekend.

​@@King1614 That's very simple to explain. For anything lower than Nightmare the demons have a "step check" that has to be completed before they can use their projectile attack. Melee attacks ignore this check while it's ignored on Nightmare.

The AI behaves differently depending on the difficulty. On all other difficulties, the AI has a small counter that ticks down when they fire a shot, and they just walk around until that counter hits zero before firing again. This was to prevent enemies from just becoming immobile turrets and actually move around a bit during combat. When people said UV was too easy, Carmack and Romero simply removed that counter for nightmare, so enemies _would_ become immobile turrets as long as they saw you, as well as making projectiles faster. Two simple changes that make the game incredibly more difficult.

UV shows how much of a beast the Cyberdemon is taking damage from hordes of low-tier enemies. But situation becomes entirely different on Nightmare with Imps getting more aggressive.

~13 imps = cyber demon on nightmare while you need multiple hundreds of imps to match 1 cyberdemon on UV. The difference is pretty huge. Aggressive projectile use is the power of the imp, especially so with fast projectiles.

Cyberdemons have a low increment in difficult on NM while imps are brutally buffed. They still have low hp, but their hordes act like fire turrets and the fact they're slow creatures keeps them away from center. Revenants for example end up going to the center too fast and they enter on punch mode.

Yup. It took less than 10" for a Cyberdemon (on Nightmare! save for the 1 vs. 20 scenario) to be done and dusted due to the heavy concentrated fire.

This was a surprisingly interesting and dynamic setup. I wonder what would happen if the positions were reversed: 1000 imps penned inside with 3 Cyberdemons in the outskirts? I’m pretty sure several Cyberdemons would take it by a landslide, but with 2 cybers? It’s a coin toss for me. A quick part two? 😅

@@michaelgum97 Could very well be, but I’m still 50-50. If the imps were penned in, most of their fireballs would hit each other, and only the front row of imps would get to ’shoot’ normally, whereas a single burst of five rockets from a cyber would probably kill around 20 imps. The imps will win by a landslide if there’s enough fire to lock the cyber in its pain state, but if there were three cybers…? I’m still saying that would be a gibfest and the cybers would take it. But yeah, not sure. You could be right too, and it would be fun to see. 😃

I want to see what would happen if the imps were locked in little cages, so that they wouldn't move towards the Cyberdemon, and thus, the Cyberdemon would kill fewer of them at once.

Suggestion: Rather than do UV and Nightmare run for each configuration do all UV first, varying the configuration accordingly to what is most interesting in UV, then do the Nightmare runs, varying conforming is most interesting in Nightmare.

For anyone who wonders why the Nightmare-difficulty Imps were so effective, it's because of the changes to their AI that happen, namely the Fast Monsters toggle. What's changed? Well, in regular Doom, enemies have to at least take a few steps between each projectile attack, and each time when they have a chance to shoot, the game rolls a random check weighted with the enemy's distance from their target, so further away = less projectiles shot. Fast Monsters throws both of these out, meaning as long as they have line-of-sight of their target, they almost never stop shooting constant projectiles and rarely move. This non-stop firing means the Cyberdemon gets outcompeted purely in attack volume even though he's doing the same thing, barely moving and always shooting. It also doesn't help that the fireballs themselves become twice as fast, making it less likely they'll miss, and sheer rate of them stunlocks the Cyberdemon in it's pain-state half the time. It's why the Cyberdemon lost against only 20 of them, since it couldn't easily retaliate.

This and the Spider Mastermind losing so many battles has me wondering about some edits that would swap their weapons. So a Cyberdemon with a super chaingun, and a Spider Mastermind with a rocket launcher firing in bursts of 3. I think it could be a fun alternate form for both of them in map making as custom monsters.

Future variant ideas: What would happen if the Cyberdemons were modded to not be immune to splash damage? What would happen if the Imps were locked in little cages, preventing them from advancing towards the Cyberdemon? If anyone wonders why nightmare imps win is because nightmare mechanics removes the fire cooldown making it so the imps don’t have to move to fire another shot instead they stay in place more like a turret. So they don’t clump up and die

There are many faults on that battle, like the imps aren't damaged by friendly fire by example, as in DOOM they can damage each other, many imps should die as result od the friendly fire, by the other side, is well known that, Cyberdemons cannot damage each other as result of an indirect explosion, only by the direct impact of one missile.
